Amana 16 Cubic Foot Cycle Defrost Refrigerator

I remember when Amana made a super energy-saving version of this ref, they used foam insulation in the old thick walled cabinet and advertised that in ran for less than the cost of running a 60 watt light bulb. [ now almost every refrigerator can make this claim ].

Amana refrigerators from the 70s were about average in overall construction, performance and reliability for domestic refrigerators. During this time Whirlpool and the Kenmore refs built by WP had them beat by a country mile and GE-HP was the other high quality ref during this time.

The tacky thing about 70s Amanas was the little styling doodads on the handles and on the shelf bars, it looked like the AMC car company lost a stylist that Raytheon picked up. The other refrigerator that had serious styling issues in the 70s was Sub-Zero, the graphics on the inside door bars looked like they were right out of the 60s or worse, while this was not as bad on Amanas it was surprising and out of place for a high-end appliance like Sub-Zero.

Thanks so much for posting these shots! Nice to see this fridge. It's the right era, because John's design critique notwithstanding, this is the Amana styling I remember so fondly from that time.

Wish it was White, and wish it was closer. 16 cubic feet is a good size.

Amanas styling doodads on handles & shelf bars...

they caught my eye. i actually thought they were kinda pretty myself. but after looking at the pictures i posted, the design actually reminded me of some of the floor patterns that i remember seeing. i don't think it was linoleum. i think it was floor tiles (vinyl maybe?) that had a patterned design something like the "styling doodads". and also, i remember someone posting a craigslist ad (i think?) where the kitchen cabinets were a really dark brown and if i remember correctly, the appliances were avocado green, and it had a tile backsplash that also had a design pattern on them that looked similar to this style of "doodad" design.

i don't know why i posted this. just something i remembered seeing & thought, maybe the person at amana was trying to match or make a similar design on the handle and shelf bars?

i was just a child during the 70's so i didn't pay much attention to styling designs but when i see old pictures from that era, it seems like there were "GROOVY" design patterns on alot of things; clothes, floor tiles, rugs, wall paper art, sheets, covers, towels, etc....

i DIG all the pattern designs!! it makes things look interesting (to me anyway).
hm hm hm.....

:o)

sandy.

when i seen the name, i remembered reading the amana post with your name it, i believe? and i thought, "well, maybe this is something that sandy would like".

by the way, the store STILL had the other maytag LDG 309 for sale. they have it priced at $125. i was talking with the guy who prices things (he told me he's only been there like 10 months or so?) and he told me that if i went back next week and if the dryer was still there, he could work with me on the price.
(here's when my finaggling kicked in) and i told him "i've seen this dryer here for quite a few months now. and the price hasn't gone down any, since i first seen it" i said, "i remember seeing it over there first, and then the next time i came, it was over there, and the time after that, i was standing here alone. it's been here a very long time and still hasn't sold. you know, i seen one on craigslist and the guy was trying to sell it for $50. i asked the guy if he would go down on it, cuz to tell you the truth, i really don't NEED it. but if the price was attractive enough, i might just TAKE it, just cuz it's a good price. well, the guy listed that one dryer a few weeks later at $45, so i called him and i told him, would you take $30? and he said no, he wouldn't go lower than $45. and like i told you, it's not like i NEED this dryer. my mom has a dryer that we use. i just like the look of this dryer and the style matches my washer, even if my washer is yellow and this dryer is a cream (almond) color, i like the look of it. but i really don't NEED this dryer. so, if you can give me a good price, i might just take it." this is what i told the guy. and he said he understood what i was saying.
then he tells me that the dryer is "GAS" and the only way they could test it was to just plug it in. and that it did turn on. but other than that, they couldn't see if the gas parts inside worked or not. so basically, they couldn't guarantee that there wasn't any problems with the flame or igniter etc. inside. that they're store was no returns, no refunds.
at $125, YEAH RIGHT!!! not even for $45!

well, before leaving the store, he came over & talked to me again and said, "so if you come back next week, we could work with $45?". and i just looked at him & i said, "we'll see?"

then he starts asking me if i was married or if i had a boyfriend? i just told him, "oh no, i've had nothing but bad luck when it comes to boyfriends. they all end up being jealous, possessive, and controling. so, i just stopped having boyfriends."

but i have a question, would a maytag LDG 309 have a lighted drum? there was a white button on the upper left hand side of the opening, near the information plate. but i felt directly behind where this white round push in button was and i couldn't feel a lens for a drum light, on the inside?? so, i'm thinking that white button is just to start the dryer up??

Unusual, that Amana is not frost free.

By golly, you're right. I missed that completely.

Note to self: Amana 16's are to be examined closely before purchase.

That's my fridge !

That looks identical the fridge sitting in my kitchen right now. Even the scuffs on the handle are the exact same. It sure works good for an old ice box, but i did want something newer. I'll post Pics soon.
