Saw this estate sale ad the other day, now the ads are getting more amusing.

Actually its a 1970 500 series. The metal lid handle is a good guide for that (1971 and older).

Oddball model with a Pre-soak and Pre-wash, otherwise it was a near clone of the 1970 500 series with the waterfall filter, etc. that occasionally graces the POD. I had a beautiful one of these in my storage trailer when it got looted in 2009.

Question is...

Will that huge magnet under Charlotte attract this one?

Ducks and... Oh heck, what's the use?

*stands and takes it!*

I'm thinking the draw towards Charlotte is heavy with this one.....

The force is strong with this one...
I actually measured and, yes, my Lady Kenmores have moved 3 inches eastward!

A friend from Atlanta bought a washer that looked a lot like this in 68 or 69. He went to Sears and the salesman was so high pressure in trying to sell him a more deluxe model that he left the department and walked over to the catalog order counter. The salesman came over to him and said that if he ordered it through the catalog, he would have to pay for delivery to which my friend said that it would be worth it to avoid dealing with him. He had them in 76 when I moved up here and they were still in the house in the early 80s when he sold it and moved to Belmont, CA. I think his washer just had a normal and a gentle cycle, three water temps on one side and the 3 water level selector on the other side of the timer. I think his washer had an all beige control panel. The dryer looked a little more deluxe with the darker area of the control panel around the beige timer area.

Tom -

There was a variety of Kenmore models in the 1968 - 1972 period that used this console in various paint/trim colors, even two early 18 lb. large capacity models. I've seen white, cream, tan, tan/gray, gray or silver, and a charcoal gray base panel, and accent colors in corresponding hues, and also ugly orange as well as pastel green.

Some of the 1968 models had the cycle-printed transparent dials, and they were in the colors you describe in that time period. I think these were good sellers for Sears, and I think there have been a few here on the site over the years.

Andy and Kenny - I have no idea who this dude is in Charlotte to whom you refer, but that washer is actually NOT calling to anyone here that I am aware of. I'd take back the one I lost in my trailer, but not this one. You can put your Ladies K back in their places now Andy, :-)

I'll post a couple pictures of similar models:

First is a 1970 KM 400, from a recent Craigslist ad. Not commonly seen these days. This too may have been a model that sales people foamed at the mouth to up-sell.

Here is the same model as the subject of this thread on the left, alongside a standard 1970 KM 500 on the right.

The standard 500 was built in 1972 thus it got the new handle-less lid.

Both these machines were stolen in 2009 and presumably sold for scrap, though I suppose some could have gone on to be used (doubt it).

That's pretty with the turquoise accents on the timer. Thanks for sharing and memorializing.

people are catching on fast aren't they!

We stand at the confluence of water nazis' and lack of build quality today. All of it headed to the landfill early. And oddly today the materials at hand to build a machine are much better than what was available in the 1950's-60's.

does anyone have a Venn Diagram app so I can plot our position?

I was planning on swinging by this sale Saturday afternoon so I'll post pics of what I find. That is, unless it's sold and gone when I get there, of course.

A friend of mine sent me a pic last night of a range in another house a mutual friend just bought, asking about value. It's pretty but looks rough, a bit like the KM washer:

Thanks for posting that money shot. This is nostalgic for me as it brings me back to the times spent in my aunt's laundry room as she had the standard version of this model with the waterfall filter. The agitator on that washer took no prisoners; it sure gave a workout. The standard model was a popular seller as I know several people who had them. The subject model here is pretty advanced with the extra cycles and self cleaning filter. It must be the first 500 series to have these features.

Gordon, the one you had was beautiful. Shame it was stolen. Nice 400 you showed above. Do you have a money shot? My cousin had the 1969 version of it with the blue tub and lid that was white underneath.

Have a good one,
James
