What's this? Never seen a pulley on an 806 dryer like this before. Should it be replaced?

replace?

only if broken. GEt all the lint out and take apart the assembly. The bearings will need a minor amount of turbine oil, the sliding plates it springs back and forth on need a bit of new white lithium grease. It looks like a working idler pulley system that needs cleaned and lubed, not replaced.

Thanks, Mark. I know all that. I've just never seen a spoked pulley on a Maytag dryer before. Is that usual? I've only seen solid ones.

Spoked Pulley On Later MT HOH Dryers

Maytag used these mainly on the later build MT HOH dryers, Brain it is silly to ask Drew these questions as he wasn't even born when these were made, LOL.

OK, John. Is this one of those pulleys I've heard tell of that should be replaced, as in steel vs. aluminum?

Sorry Brain I didn't think why you were asking if the aluminum pulley should be replaced. I never saw a problem with the spoked pulleys, but there weren't that many ever used I suppose. In theory the smaller pulley would wear faster than the steel ones did, although this would take a VERY long time because there much more tension on the 2ndary belt on HOH dryers, so you don't have the problem with slippage that you have with the motor pulleys on HOH dryers. Aluminum pulleys often have more problems with the bronze bushings working loose, but I have never seem this happen on one of these pulleys.

In any case I would keep this pulley, not only is it unique but it also allows a better view of the dryers floor pan, LOL.

Age has little to do with it.

I can practically rebuild a HoH dryer in my sleep, and they were last produced years before I came along. I like the spoked pulley because it gives a slightly better view, and it's easier to grab with a few fingers when you're reassembling the dryer and not looking at the pulley.

Not the most advanced dryer in the world, but one of my favorites to service,
Dave

That's coming from someone who was warranty service on dirt when it was just invented...

I agree with Dave! I actually like the spoked idler pulley. It's cool looking when it's in motion and different enough from the later solid pulleys to be desirable IMHO. Brian, clean and lube that bad boy just as we did on the 906.
