Thinking about my current dishwasher-less situation and realizing that being over a sink of hot water three or more times a day is *NOT* up one's street, had a thought.

For D&M design motors such as my Kenmore/Frigidaire dw is the shaft nothing more than the screw which goes through the pump/drain/impellers, etc... and holds the whole thing together? If so as noted in another thread the screw/shaft on mine has shorn itself apart; but wondered if possible to get the remaining portion out then simply install a new pump/wash assembly using a new screw? This to me seems not only a less expensive option then purchasing a new motor, but an easier repair as well. One did test the DW after removing the broken off screw and the motor seem to run perfectly. Am guessing it was the rusted shaft screw somehow binding the motor up from moving that was causing the humming sound. If one let this go long enough the thing cut itself off out of some sort of protection.

Thoughts?

Hey John, Thanks For the Invite

Am on my way out for drinks/dinner soon, may one call tomorrow?

Sort of am half and half about putting any effort and money into this Frigidaire (badged Kenmore DW). Have been looking at vintage units in and around the NY area but none are close and shipping quotes run $$$.

Read the reviews of the newest 18" Frigidaire/Kenmore dishwashers (built in China) and the general opinion is they are decent enough units, especially compared to washing dishes manually, there still seem to be issues with getting the entire top rack clean. That is the insides of cups and glasses especially loaded towards the back have yibbles inside.

So I says to myself I says; might as well save several hundred and fix the Frigidaire one already has if that is the case.

A few glasses of excellent hock and a nice meal should help put things into perspective.....

NEWER STYLE CHINESE 18" DWS

combo52's profile picture
We sell and service many of these machines, biggest problems are SMALL interior space and most people cannot figure how to use the detergent dispenser and end up clogging the whole DW up with mineral deposits. People only seem to use the covered part of the DD and if you do that on many models and use the longest cycle the Det is not released till the 5th water fill. There is a small recess in the lid of the DD where you are also supposed to add detergent [ newer models now have a redesigned DD ].

Other than those issues they seem to work ok, we have had relatively few reliability problems overall with these DWs. There is also a 24" wide version of these DWs that is sold to meet ADA requirements by both WP and GE that we see in a lot of offices downtown, the 24" versions are not holding up as well, lots of broken wheels on racks, door hinge problems, etc. The 24" machines also have a lot less usable space in them much like Mielie and other European DWs.

Chinese Built 18" DW's

Read a post on an appliance repair forum that the newest incarnation of Frigidaire 18" dishwasher use a plastic motor stem instead of metal. One poster's rather new but out of warranty unit had a problem where one of the impellers somehow stripped/broke that bit of plastic. He was now on the hook for a new motor/pump assembly as there wasn't a way to simply repair or replace the plastic motor stem. Is that sort of problem common?

Frigidaire 18" DWs

combo52's profile picture
The American made plastic tub models have a plastic shaft extension on the main motor and when the plastic shaft extension is damaged you have to replace the complete motor [ expensive ] I don't think the poster is talking about the Chinese made machines as they do not have a plastic extension on the motor shaft, and on the Chinese models the pump and motor is fairly cheap to buy.

*LOL*

Saw the new 18" Frigidaire dishwashers at PC Richards and was not impressed.

Yes, they now have an upper spray arm instead of the tower, but in terms of useable space things seemed rather cramp to my minds' eye. In fact think the new model hold less than my D&M designed unit, if that is even possible.

Am still weighing my options including trying to find an older but interesting portable unit. Have found a couple of Whirlpools but they are way upstate somewhere.

Yes, saw that listing over in "Shoppers Square", but thank you for thinking of me.

Besides reasons listed in my response there, am getting quotes of >$300 to ship portable dishwashers from upstate NY. Cannot imagine what it would cost to shift that beast of a KA dishwasher from MA to NYC.

Thought about renting a small SUV or something and making the three hour or so drive. However once you factor in those costs, petrol and so forth it probably is equal or cheaper to go with someone on U-ship. \

Now that Memorial Day has arrived renting anything on a summer weekend is going to be a challenge and you will pay dearly. The only way to make certain one gets anything is to collect by Friday afternoon and often that is pushing it far.

It was just a possibility, but not being aware of what vehicle (if any) you possess, I agree 100% that the cost of acquiring such an item starts to rack up very steeply until you are starting to exceed the cost of a new unit. Not to mention the time it would take getting there and back - I am now at the stage of trying to make such journeys do double duty by visiting family or friends at the same time, if at all possible. Much as we love our vintage appliances there does come a point where we have neither the time or energy to spend a precious weekend day or holiday making such a trip for an item which may not even function for all that long - an even bigger consideration when required as a daily driver.

Hopefully you will get a chance at something much closer to home soon, although I can see how the ability to click that mouse and flex some plastic starts to look very appealing especially when faced by YET ANOTHER sink full of dirty dishes, knowing that a solution - good, bad or indifferent could be at your door in days or even hours.

But in the meantime some (British) light relief

Hi Launderess!

gmmcnair's profile picture
I used to have one of the little D&M dishwashers like you described. When it died, I bought a GE portable new from the Home Depot. I did this because I wasn't impressed with the newer stainless 18" models. They really do hold less than my old one did.

The GE has been in service since 2011 with no problems. It has the spray arm and wash tower design like our old small dishwashers, but has a filtering system so less food gets redeposited if a less than stellar scraping job is done. It is also light and easy to move. It's also quieter, washes dishes better, and uses less water for a cycle than the Kenmore/Frigidaire did. Only quibble I've had is heavily soiled items on the upper rack around the edged occasionally having a yibble, as you put it, left on them. That's a rare occurrence.

If you can manage another 6" of space, I have been pleased with mine for over three years now. Currently, it's the only portable model that GE makes, so you can find it pretty much anywhere.

That Fairy (!) liquid advert

in scen(e)ography is similar to the ads for P & G's Ivory here in the States in the same time period.

Alas, Ivory is not what it used to be, not by a long shot. Even after we got our first dishwasher, we used Ivory Liquid for everything else. Now, I just use blue Dawn like most everyone I know.

Thanks, was hoping you would chime in as also an owner of these Frigidaire 18" units.

Quite honestly it is the rather "average" cleaning results that is keeping me from digging in an repairing the unit. I mean no matter what one did there was always *something* left behind.

Case in point the saucers that go just behind the tower on the lower rack. One always found ground up yibble bits on the underside of our saucers regardless of any efforts.

My theory is that these 18" units both of recent vintage and newer units seem to be mostly scaled down 24" designs. That is they do not take into account differences in how just the loss of six inches does to the interior space. Reviews of the newest Chinese built 18" dishwashers state items placed on the rear of upper racks are often coated with yibbles.

Sadly there just isn't a way to get a 24" unit into our kitchen. Well it would but how would the operator get in our out is the problem! *LOL* Am still rather limber but there are limits these days.....

That's too bad about the space. I understand; I have a small galley style kitchen and it was a real challenge getting room for a full size portable. Alas, traffic patterns do not allow a built-in either. I have to do some comical maneuvers to do anything in the kitchen when it's washing.
