This looks interesting. The interaction with the LED lights, as shown in the video, is clever. Click on "Read More" on the bottom left of the linked page to see the Whirpool press release.

All I can say is Hmmmm...

Not quite sure what to make of it.  Maybe good, maybe not.

They lost me at "we have this rich set of information of what the person is doing at the moment".

Does Nest work together with Google? If not... they soon will! yell

@logixx

They do. But since we all are on YT and use Google nearly every day, I gave data protection up a long time ago. If tey want something about me, they know it one way or another.
But anyway: They really think it is necessary to incorporate a nother device into that loop?
I mean, conecting an appliance to a smart meter: OK. Setting a more efficent but longer cycle if I leave home: I am capable of that my self, thanks.
But now I have to buy several thermostats, conect them via my WiFi to my smart meter, my appliances (which are directly conected to my smart meter anyway), my phone, my car and maybe even one of these health thingies. (Note: I do not own anything in this chain except a phone which is conected to my WiFi!)
Enough is enough.
Nothing is this system is such a big uncomfort that I need to spread my data even more. If I have smart thermostats, why do I not just preprogramm them to get the temp up 15min before I get up? Why can I not just change the temp on my phone as I can do that anyway? Why can't I select a more efficent cycle my self if I go out?
No, I have to give my location, my habbits and everything else to Google, Nest, Whirlpool and my energy company! Not that they all have some data yet, now I have to give EVERYBODY not just a piece, but ALL my data.
Sorry, I like new technology, but this is useless even in my eyes...

Once again, this is just another example of companies appealing to the ignorance of the majority, rather than working to build a better quality machine. The days of encouraging and empowering people to make their own choices and actually learn how things work and how they should be done properly are over, sadly. Things like this just influence the lazy and ignorant to be even more lazy and ignorant, and hurt people like us who want and deserve to be in control of the products we pay for.

Like henene4 said above, I love new technology, but this is to the extreme. If something works well as it is, why change it/water it down by going overboard with altering the things that don't need improvement, and ignoring the things that do? Our government and healthcare establishments use software that is outdated over 10 years, and yet we're letting the "cloud" decide how to wash our clothes and dishes? Okay.

Some of what is being offered will be useable for some but not for others.  For example:  Nest knowing when I am on my way home from work most likely will not help it cool my home since it takes longer to get it cool than my trip from work and there is this other problem with the fact that my house uses less energy if I don't set the Tstat back then if I do but...another story for some other time.... Now that I work from home on a floor the Nest would not be... I don't need this at all.

There was this bit about being at an energy peak and reducing consumption. At first this sounds crazy, but I and Joe(OP) have electric meters that track electric use by hour which means that our energy company can charge us more during hours ""IT" considers Peak.  So .15 cents per Kwh off peak, $2.50 per Kwh peak.  So some folks might want a thermostat that knows this and saves.

For me I only do Laundry once a week or two so the washer ability doesn't mean anything to me....I an swift enough in the brain to know when I want to do laundry and what the costs might be...others might not be, in fact I know others without a clue... so they may like this.....I don't.

As far as Google knowing things.  I use Google and opt in to it's application sharing.  It works for me for what I want.  It may not work for others and right now they can opt out of what they don't want. There is also the fact that in the USA the Government knows everything about everybody without them doing a thing and regardless of what they don't want to share.  We have cameras at traffic lights taking pictures of cars running traffic signals, so this notion of personal privacy is gone.    I guess I can still whisper into my lovers ear...if I had one.. but who knows? In my Neighborhood the police are encouraging every property owner a to install surveillance cameras(I forget the name of this program).  Many of my neighbors have them so they can see everyone and everything within a 360 degree radius 24 hours a day.  They can download it to the police on request.  So I keep my hands where they belong while walking down my streets :)

Still I like the advancement of technology.  The trick is to use it in the correct and beneficial ways for each of us.

no thank you

No thank you! I'll set the washer and dryer my self, and same for the dishwasher. Why do I need this stupid crap? I too love new technology, but this is way out of control! More people are becoming more stupid to be doing laundry. This is the average consumer these days.

I have to agree, that is why program an empty machine? Or a machine you just filled and if you did why decide when you're at the mall you'll think I'll turn my appliance on, I loaded it with dirty stuff on my way out, so I'm showing off what I can do on my phone!
