The fully electronic model (reverse rack) is the WU1000, then they also made the WU1005 and in deco-white EWU1005. These were the last series of reverse rack machines. That was a sad day for me. |

My grandparents had the electronic reverse rack similar to the fourth picture. It had the eight buttons minus the time readout where instead it had Wash-Rinse-Dry indicators. Looking back, it's amazing to me that they had that and their Lady Kenmore with the completely electronic panel, and those machines were from the 80s. All our appliances were fairly new but had all cheaper mechanical controls. I still remind them everyday how mad it makes me that they traded the still running LK for a GE that now sounds like a freight train.

I finally got an all-pushbutton Maytag this afternoon!
Not a washer but a 1976 WU-601 that I got for $25. It needs to have it's front panels replaced/repaired as holes were drilled in it to add wood panels. Maybe I'll just fill the holes and repaint them. The inside is still in good condition. I haven't tested it yet.

Would you consider, as many of us with extensive appliance literature collections have, lending some of this marvelous collection to the Webmaster to scan into Ephemera? I'd love to see some close-ups of a lot of your brochures, especially the "Bristles of Water" first ever Maytag dishwasher. It is one of my favorite all-time appliances. |

I don't have the actual pamphlet. I got it from the web. Here are the pictures of it. I could get a scan of it at the office in a few weeks when I return from my vacations. |

Wow.
I loved this!! I especially loved the "bristles of water" advertisement. I have WC401 with very low mileage and a Jenn-Air version of the last of the Reverse Racks DWU9905. Thank You!!! |

I always thought people here tend to look down with distain at Maytag dishwashers. Glad to see some Maytag interest in their dishwashers. They have always been a favorite of ours. |

Here's some pictures that I found of my WC401, once I painted the front with silver paint and the top white. And my Inglis top-loading dishwasher in my old apartments. |

Nice! Thanks for sharing these! I just bought an Inglis top-loading dishwasher a few weeks ago but mine is an older basic model with an impeller.
There are a few pics in this thread: http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?54621
I have tested it and it works. I still haven't tested the Maytag WU-601 but I repaired the front panels. I hope it works too!

Hey,
Yea I could go back to the 70s for a bit also. I love looking at the pics of those Maytag reverse racks. Growing up I was the primary "dishwasher" in my household and I learned to detest the whole process of hand washing dishes. In 1979 I went on a rampage to get a dishwasher. Mom had a friend who got a KitchenAid and loved it. But when it came down to it she did not want a dishwasher in "her" kitchen. So I had to bypass Mom (I was a junior in hs at the time) and managed to persuade the others in the house to scrape up $100 each and I went dishwasher shopping. The local Maytag dealer "sold" me on the Maytag and in the Spring of 1980 the harvest wheat WC700 was delivered behind Mom's back. After witnessing what that Maytag dishwasher could do for her, Mom's anger subsided. And the WC700 became her best friend. Mom is gone now 3 yrs and when I go back to visit dad, I will run the WC700 and the memories roll in. I found my WC401 on CL and I wheel it out a few times a month. What fun!!! I would also go back to the 70's because there were a few men I would have loved to get my hands on for a few min, but that story is for another thread. LOL! |

I just got another WU-601 which was advertised for free! The ad said "old dishwasher" and there was no picture but I took a chance and inquired about the brand/model! It's owner emailed me back telling me "it's a Maytag, but I don't have pictures, can't find the model. I sent him a picture of my model tag and he went back to me and told me saying it's the same model, WU601... I was quite thrilled as the outer panels on mine were drilled to install wood kits, I fixed them but I was searching for other panels. It's just a few months older than the other one (the tag doesn't say series 01) but the serial number shows May 1976 vs September for the one above in this thread.
I was so happy, even if it was free, I gave the owner $20 for it. I didn't expect to find another WU601 and he didn't expect to get any money for it so we were both happy I think!

That control panel looks like the model my mom had, purchased around 1979-80. Hers was a convertible portable with the butcher block top.
As I recall, she followed all the instructions for seasoning the butcher block--rubbing in mineral oil and whatever other steps--and then never used it because that was the only spot in the kitchen where the big Litton microwave would fit. So it was a bit of a workout rolling the dishwasher with microwave across the room to hook it up. |

I have never liked a Maytag washer, but the dishwashers were wonderful, they would blast off anything.and I still think that the belt drive unit had to be more reliable than having the motor under the pump. |

The 3-rack Maytag was probably out on the market for only 2-3 years at the most. From what I gather it suffered from major performance issues as a tall tub machine. The bottom rack was very narrow in height and was only best suited for skillets, fry pans, 9 x 13 casserole dishes and similar "depth" cooking vessels. the middle rack was for plates and such. The brochure pictures presented the most optimum, perfect load. In reality, I remember it being perceived as not a very flexible loading machine in the real world. |
