I have a 1964 Fridgedaire Custom multimatic washer. Are special tools required to take the transmission etc. out to put in a new brake? The guy that said he would do this told me today that he no longer has those tools. Thanks for your help. Gary

Hi Gary,

First, did you get the Tech Talk that Robert scanned (document # [866])?

Yes there are some special service tools but I did mine without most of them, there was a tool I had to insert a keyway at the correct place, I can't see it in the Tech Talk but I'll have to search my tools to see exactly what I used... It's been two years and I don't remember it too well.  Reassembling these transmissions can be a bit tricky.

I had to open mine twice before I got it working right. I was quite motivated as I disassemble it again the day after I had it reassembled incorrectly (the tub did exactly like yours does when I reassembled it for the first time, before that, it wouldn't agitate or spin at all). Some internal parts need to be mechanically locked to the upper part of the transmission housing. The first time I reassembled it, I didn't push far enough and the parts were barely locked together. The second time, I got it right but I knew what I had to correct.

And it required quite a few hard to find parts. I was lucky to have some on hand that I bought before I had the machine (I knew I was going to get it for a while!) and it didn't take too long before I found the other parts but I did search a lot!
