Today, I was out biking into Hilo Bay Front and stopped at Smith's Trade . A local used furniture and appliance store I frequent. As soon as I turned in to the yard, there sat a well taken care of Westinghousetop loading Laundromat. It has the weigh to Save / Lock N Spin safety lid lock. The inner and outer tubs are porcelain on steel. It has the Hand Wash agitator too . I'm going yo call and have them save it for me. There was also a Maytag (Samsung made ) Neptune set in good physical condition. The dryer is gas. I'll ask for them too. I'll get some photos and send them. Aloha.

I was able to stop at Smith's earlier today and snatch the Westinghouse. Charlie said he'll drop it off in our driveway. Not today. Maybe tomorrow. I was also given two Maytags . An A407 and a newer Dependable Drive model. The 407 is harvest gold.

The model number is
LA501PXWL
The serial number Is
LRE39443

I'm not sure what year it was manufactured but,it's NOT a, WCI model. I removed the agitator and the stem it sits on is corroded. I might have to use steel wool after drying it out thoroughly to check for any holes. Charlie may be delivering it later today. We're getting ready for two hurricanes to hit by tomorrow.

I'll try but have been having issues sending the photos and videos I've taoen. The storm is strengthening. It's now a hurricane. Seventy to a hundred mph winds, heavy rain and high waves forcast.

We're concerned for you and your neighbors. Pacific hurricanes are rare (hence the name 'pacific') but just as serious as the more familiar Atlantic ones.

I wil be sure......LOL

Every piece is wrapped with a roll of wrappimg, shrinkable plastic I get from a supply store.. I wiped everything bone dry and left the doors open with paper jammed in the door lock to keep the doors ajar..All pets inside. Safe and sound. Plenty of table games, coloring books, writing paper, L.P.stereo albums, videos, and tapes. Winds are increasing and rainfall is longer and more frequent.

Chuck,
Stay safe my good man. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers and I hope the storm doesn't cause you or any others there any harm. At least you had the chance to prepare and not be blindsided by this. Keep us all posted. We'll be anxiously waiting to hear from you to see how things panned out.

Good luck,

Rick

Thanks so much Brent. No damages here at our house but lots of flash flooding in our area.
The washer is in fair condition but,its agitator post that the agitator sets on is corroded. I'm not.sure if there's any leakage yet and won't know until they deliver it and I'm able to run it through a cycle. Hopefully,It will be o.k.

All is well. We had loose coconuts fall but not on any important items like four cars in our driveway. Mostly debris that the winds left. Most of the damage is south of us where it's mostly hippies and drug addicts in tents or cars. The severe water flow is making the bay come to higher tides. I went in town biking yesterday and was dodging the branches but got a flat anyway. The Westinghouse and Maytags come today. Sean,my friend who works for Amerigas, is stopping over. We'll go get them and maybsee a couple more pieces for me to grab, fix and sell . He bought a Duet washer from me a couple months ago. He and his family of nine love it. I showed him how to clean it out once a month and leave the door ajar after use. His wife said it gets their clothes cleaner then ever and likes the height with the drawer being used for additives. His family help to house the homeless, get them help from the state and find Programs available for rehab. Due to the massive amount of crack and ice addicts here, they're busy 24/7. So, I know that washer is going through lots of laundry.

O.K. The Westinghouse needed a minor repair. The water level selector set on the medium level was filling to the highest level. Just needed to adjust the screw. I ran it through a full cycle. The indexing was short and brief. Nothing like the Franklin they now use. I did notice the power plug got hot and during thespin,it sounded a bit coarse making a bit of a noise may be the tub barings. I don't plan on using it daily. The Amana front loader ( made by Samsung ) is flawless. No leaks, very quiet, and the final spin on thebhigh setting must be around 1200 rpms because the clothes were almost as well spun out as my LGs that go 1300. That model ,I'm giving to Cheryl. She has a Whirlpool DD but due to her not having a dryer and the heavy rains we get there, she needed either a gas dryer or a high speed spin model. I found both. The matching gas dryer is getting a new igniter. The original owners must have not been aware of the need to convert from natural gas to propane.so the burner built up carbon deposits ruining the igniter. Charlie ordered the part and the dryet.will be ready to pick up Wednesday. Sean, another lpgas friend of mine, lives on his farm about two miles south of us. He met me when I worked at Little Gas Shak. Cheryl now owns that business and has done well getting all the customers aware of her new place in Pahoa. Pete is charging her $2,500/mo Les,an x cop who owned the lpgas store in Pahoa, rents his.place out to her for a meer $200/mo!!!! Once all her current and past customers are aware of the changes and move to her new location, she'll be fine. We are going to see "America" the band, live at the Kona Hilton Hotel's Glass Ballroom which was recently rebuilt due to damages done from a 7.1 earthquake a few years ago to celebrate their grand reopening.

Today, I wasn't feeling too swift. I have been caughing up phlem and running a mild fever. Anyway, there were lots of bath linens to bleach so, I decided to try out my "new" Westinghouse. I weighed them and had a large/full size one. I only have cold water to hook test models to but this should be o.k.. I have a screw cap to put on the hot water inlet and hook up the cold water to the cold water hose. I used a half cup of powdered Gain and , after six minutes of washing,I added 1/4C of Clorox. It works great and rinses so nice having a long three minute spin/spray before deep rinsing. I added a capful of Gain fabric softener then it went to the final spin. Of course, after that was over, I put the towels in the Tromm to get more water out. Then hung the towels out to dry. They got real clean and white. The last tme I had one of these exact models was back in 1973. It had the Hand Wash agitator which was a promo freebee on this model if you purchased it with the maching dryer. The only missing piece is the filter tray that slides onto the recirculating spray. Great condition for a Westinghouse top loader this old. Loving the sounds it makes. Reminds me of the sounds in a true Westinghouse Laundromat coin op store. I hope due to their bad reputation here, someone else has one or a few of these pre WCI models. The indexing is minor and turnover is awesome.

O.K. I washed some blankets and am still amazed at how well this Westinghouse works. I sat on my work bench and watched the entire cycle. No air pockets and Sure Spin Drive really works well. The pump is among the most powerful one I ever saw in a spin/drain top loader. That washer full to the rim ,has no rim overflow as it speeds up draining out the water as it spins. It's empty in less than thirty seconds. I'm not sure of the spin RPM but it does o.k. I place the finished loads into the LG Tromm to give a 1400 RPM twelve minute spin. Fun to watch and lots of fun memories. You can be sure....if it's WESTINGHOUSE

Did another mixed load medium size. O still can't get over the condition this is in . I'll be attempting to doa short, sweet video tomorrow so you can all see her work. Just mesmerized watching and am asking anybody here if they know where I can find the filter pan that fits on a frame located at twelve o clock on the upper plastic frame over the tub that encases the inlet nozzle. I was wrong about the Hand Wash agitator. It either got lost or was never there. The current swirled vain agitator is laundromat blue not gray like the other one . I'm in the market for a duo. Looking.forward to running and filming tomorrow.

WOW!!! Westinghouse washers are my absolute favorite!!!! Brings back memories of my babysitter's washer when I was a kid. She had the straight vane agitator and so did my cousin. The indexing tub is what got me! I was sooo amazed at it that i would stand there and watch the entire cycle. I know they have a bad reputation, but that Westy cleaned so well. If only I could get my hands on one!

Hey Keyone,

Having had a few in my youth and selling Westinghouse products in my first appliance sales job, I knew they had some issues with repairs but mostly due to abuse, misuse, and overloads. However, the commercial ones lasted at least ten years. We had lots of original "Westinghouse Laundromats" stores in Baltimore. One was on Highland Avenue, another on E. Baltimore St. just west about half a block.off S. Broadway.I remember the "male bath house" directly next door to it. They priginaly had the front load Laundromats but at least one row of the top loading style. There was another one on Fleet Street too. It now has Wascomat front loaders.
