Ive actally used those wascot/electrolux commerical washers, soon as you start the programme on thoses machines they go into high speed spin mode where it weights the loads before the main wash, they do spin really really fast at the start of the cycle, so that child was very lucky, but where the hell was the parents!! why do these people allow there kids to play around in places like this.

How could she have managed to lock the door and start the machine from inside the drum?

Ok,the child could'nt lock the washer door and start it after climbing?? inside--Who would be so careless to start the washer without knowing WHERE the kid was-Kids DO like to climb on top off, under,or inside things. It just being a kid.Glad the child survived! Why would a parent let a child as young as that wonder around in a laundramat??This is just as bad as that parent? that put the kid inside the washer and started it-or was it the babysitter?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  10 to 1 a sibling locked the door and pressed start.   Under the best of circumstances they are nasty places.  Definitely not a place to bring children.

I do hope the girl is ok. But I bet the parents who weren't watching her will have the nerve to sue that laundromat. A few weeks ago at a laundromat I go to, a woman was there with her 2 daughters probably around 8 years old. And they were running all over the place and there were a lot of people there. They were climbing on top of the large 6 load washers, climbing in them and on the folding counters, racing around in the carts and getting in everyones way. You could tell people were getting pissed off. In fact a few commented about it. And the mother was doing nothing about it. She told them something maybe once but there was no meaning behind it. I had all of my supplies on a table next to a wall ready for use and out of the way. When one of the girls comes up to me with a hand full of dryer sheets and asked if they were mine. Sure enough they were. The only way they could have got to them is if they climbed onto the counter. And there are signs all over saying not to let your kids on the counters or on the machines. I badly wanted to say something and I should have. Had my Mom been with me, she would have without a doubt. Had one of them got hurt, I would have told the owner exactly what the rest of us had put up with. I never wish bad on a childs welfare, but I will not stand by and let someone try to profit from their own neglect. When I was a kid and went to the laundromat or even the store with my Mom, I was never allowed to leave her side. In fact at the laundromat, I always helped. Again I hope the girl is ok, but I hope her parents learned a lesson.

The story said that someone had previously tried to use the machine and it wouldn't start so was left for another.  Possibly it was set and ready to run soon as the door closed if/when the glitch was resolved.

I have used those Wascomat machines and I can tell you that they will not start until the handle on the door is turned. About 3/4 of a turn and there is resistance in the handle(knob).

This happened in Houston. Here is the whole story.

Mama and child go to laundromat. Mama puts money in washing machine (why she didn't put the clothing in first is beyond me). Machine won't start. Mama goes to see the attendant to ask why machine won't start. While mama is preoccupied with that girl climbs inside machine and it starts up. Another woman screams because she sees the girl going around and around in the washer. Attendant pulls circuit breaker. Machine stops and they call 911. Life Flight comes and takes her to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

There are many holes in this story (probably due to hysteria on the part of the participants). A follow up story was that the machines were checked out by the company that maintains them and they were found to be working properly.

I use the same kind of machine for our comforter. That machine will not start until the door is closed AND THEN it will lock on you until the cycle is finished.
The procedure is you put your clothing in first, then soap, then money and away you go. If you put money in first and start the machine before your clothes are in there you won't be able to load them because the door locks before filling.

Just saying, it is a different world with rows of  large F/L machines and preoccupied parents.

And--the kids are not told to stay away from the machines!the child IS old enough to understand to stay away from them if the parent tells them not to-esp STERNLY!!

Maybe the little critter just wouldn't take her bath so they put her in there for a quick wash and fluff.

--I'm kidding, stop with the hate posts.

It almost sounds like there was an accomplice ie another child, that aided in the entrapment. Either that or she was terribly (un)lucky as most of the time when I go to the L-Mat, it takes God and three policemen to get the dern machine running.

A quote, of my own, I want to share w/ all here who are parents & what to say to their "Lost, But Found, Before Anything Horrid Like This Happens, Or Worse-Children":

"I got scared when I looked down and didn't see you!"

Hopefully, there was nothing more behind how this child got trapped in this machine, other than it spontaneously starting, and unfortunately at that critical time...

Not making excuses for the parent, but young kids can unknowingly get themselves in dangerous situations and places in mere seconds, you have to watch them like hawk.

Personally, I'm probably lucky to be alive and healthy considering some of the risky things I got into as a curious and prone to wandering boy.

Like I said earlier, there are so many holes in this story you could drive a truck through them.

The little girl is still in the hospital, with non life threatening and no disabling injuries. But no news station/newspaper released any info about just what kind of injuries she has. She was very lucky!

Follow up.....

I found a follow up story to this one, but couldn't find it later on to link it. It stated that another playmate/sibling closed the door and latched it after the girl had climbed in. This would explain how it started, especially if there was time on the machine already paid for.

Looks like Iheartmaytag wins the prize for guessing what actually happened! Thanks for the update!
