I have a KDS-17A that I would like to use as a portable. I also have a very nice KDI-57 on its way that I thought about converting to a built-in so I could take the sides, top, etc. from the KDI-57, put them on the KDS-17A.
I am getting conflicting information on whether or not this will work. I was wondering if anyone has the conversion instructions for the KDI-57 so I could see in what order it should be disassembled and so I can determine if this is possible.
Has anyone tried anything like this? If you have them and could E-Mail them to Robert to post for download I would really appreciate it. The KDI-57 is a beautiful machine and I may decide to keep it as is but I know I would use the KDS more than the KDI because of the water heating capabilities.
I have downloaded the parts list and while that shows a picture of all the pieces of the portable version it doesn’t help me easily understand in what order I should be removing pieces. I am hoping the conversion guide will.
Thanks. |

it's on the way, Jackie picked it up last night around 9! She had quite the day with that broken mailbox festouche!
All the portable parts should work fine on the Superba, if you should decide to do it, because the frame and chassis is the same. The KD-57 was designed to operate as a portable then be built-in later by removing the portable specific parts. My parents did this with a 15 Series Superba in 1966. I don't think this machine was used very much, the PO was a widow lady in her 90s who was moving to assisted living. I put a printed copy of the Parts List inside on the rack. |

I've found that the KDC and KDI machines clean just as well as the Superbas as long as they are loaded right and your domestic hot water is a decent temp. Also very hard water can be a problem with any machine. Thanks again Ralph, hope she arrives safely, Jackie and my son Josh wrapped her up well in blankets for the trip!

Originally posted to me by AW member Fred fnelson487, here is the official KitchenAid Division of Hobart instruction sheet for converting a KDS-57 from the portable to the built-in configuration.
As they say when writing technical manuals, re-assembly is the reverse of the above. :) Hope this helps! |

Thank you Sandy. I will get this printed out along with the Service Manual and when the machine gets here we'll see if I decide to do the conversion or leave it as is.
Steve, I think a DISH-WashIn would be great fun but I only have four machines. We'd be done in 10 minutes. LOL!! Maybe after I have a few more I will consider one. I looked at a house not long ago that had an 18X30 shop with electric and water. I about pee'd my pants imagining how many dishwashers I could fit in there.
