Our very own RevvinKevin came for a visit to our new home on Sunday, and spent a fantastic day with us. It started with a surprise lurking in his truck when he arrived--what could it be??

At first I thought, due to the slant of the panel, that it was a belt-drive Whirlpool, but imagine my surprise when I "unwrapped" the straps holding on the cover--it was a Frigidaire 1-18!

Some of you may recall that, back in 2005, my very first vintage washer (obtained weeks after finding this site) was a 1978 Frigidaire 1-18, model WC. Back then, there were places to find 1-18s, and I never thought twice about encountering any difficulty in locating another.
In 2007, I moved to San Francisco, and I gave my beloved 1-18 to a friend who needed a washer. Of all the washers I had, this one never needed a repair, nor gave me a lick of trouble. Fast forward to now, and it's become incredibly difficult to nab these things. One of the places in Phoenix, which used to have a room full of the things, liquidated; I've only seen two on Craigslist since. I began to feel the patented "Apex Wash-a-Matic" remorse--the feeling of "Aw, crap, this was rarer than I'd thought." Here, David stands next to My Precious as I fall victim to irrational exuberance. :-) This post was last edited 10/30/2014 at 00:40 |

Hook it up, of course! And get some laundry! Good thing I'd just pulled a set of sheets of the bed, and Kevin contributed some clothes too. All of that put together, and we only had a 2/3rd load. Damn, these things hold a lot of laundry!
It was hot out, regrettably--when Kevin asked about a good visit time, I'd suggested October. Naturally, this would be the weekend it hovered in the nineties, as evidenced by my ability to schvitz through my shirt, and then some.

Here, Roger, David, Kevin and I hover over the machine, and I improvise a drain hose from a dishwasher corrugated line. (1-18s, for whatever reason, have teeny drain hoses. Teeny. As in, your ring clamp won't make this happen.)
A few minor corrections later, and we're good to go. Note the bottle of Suavitel in the background, causing Roger to keep his distance. Suavitel, folks. BECAUSE IT SMELLS BETTER THAN DOWNY.

...to do some laundry!
We practiced the ancient art of slightly under-filling the machine with water, to promote effective turnover. This was David's first encounter with a Jet-Cone pulsator Frigidaire, and he was exceedingly impressed. (He's been lusting for a Philco with Hulatator™, so this satisfies his rampant desire for unconventional agitation.)

She's a beaut--tight filter and agitator cap, and nice cones.
"Nice cones." I never thought I'd say that...

As I recall, the 1-18 was the only later-generation pulsator machine to return to the Unimatic's full length of pulsation travel. It's very lively, that's for sure.

I'm so very grateful to Kevin for an incredible, wonderful, thoughtful housewarming gift!! This was truly unexpected, and I'm beyond thrilled. And in case you're wondering, this will be buried with me, along with my Norelco Dial-a-Meal, when I die. There shall be no getting rid of these. So, get an excavator to dig the hole. :-)
This means we now have the 1-18, Westinghouse slant-front, Maytag, Wards/Westinghouse top loader, Maytag wringer, and Easy Spin-Drier. My plan to keep the appliances under control is progressing normally. :-) (BUT I AM STILL USING THE SAME DISHWASHER, GORDON!!)

That's not all! We then segued into an amazing dinner and a real treat for dessert, both delectable temptations that Kevin had suggested. More on those in a separate thread--and a photo-documented recipe that was worth the wait in one instance...and hardly required any waiting in the other!

Nate. It looks like you guys had a great time. I wish I could have come down. I'm glad I got to see Kevin for a bit and his stay with us was great as well. I unfortuneatly had to work on Sunday(someone has to keep those inmates at bay). I am looking forward to coming down for a visit and play with the "new" 1-18.

I still have the top and parts from it - I got this '79 TOL washer a while back and the one you gave me still lives on in storage for now :-) I was just thinking Nate could trick his new model out with a sunroof and some other goodies!

Brad - Thank you so much!! Yes, my future plans for the house include digging a 50,000 square foot garage underneath to store things. Because it's not hoarding when it's organized. :-)
Eddie - I'll do my best to post the meal thread tonight, it was amazing! Yes, summery pulsation is awesome. Justin - We missed you! Glad to hear you had a great time, but I intimately understand about the work schedule. She will definitely be here when you want to give her a spin! (Now we're going to have to find a bigger dryer--this machine tests the limits of the '78 Kenmore next to it.) Greg - LOL! Well, until someone starts producing Sta-Puf again, I guess we're screwed. At least when you dole out the Suavitel, the instructions don't say "one scoop or two, depending on HE or top-loader." And EEEEEEEEK, I love that TOL machine!!! A Holy Grail 1-18! It's the soft, warm glow of electric sex in the window! You're right, bright metal boxes with cords are our version of Amish friendship bread. :-) Stephanie - LOL It's one of my favorite expressions. I picked it up from M*A*S*H. And you're right, there's nothing more charming than a house with only one bathroom. Like I said the other night, the one thing that sold me on this place that I didn't have in any of the others was an exhaust fan. ;-) (Greg? :-) ) Peter - You are so right! This machine is very quiet, I was really surprised. The WC I had chugged like a diesel engine. Lawrence - Kevin scored hugely with this, it was an eye-popping surprise! :-) And yes, you're absolutely right. It could be the juxtaposition of avocado shorts with harvest gold. Maybe something about interspersing earth-tones? :-) |

WOW, what kind of jerk would think some raggity, 41 year old washing machine (in that horrid 70's yellow no less) would make a good gift for anyone, let alone the perfect house warming gift?!?
Oh... I guess that jerk would be me! LOL
But seriously....... Nate I'm very happy you were SO surprised and excited when you first lifted the blanket up, just like a kid opening the perfect gift on Christmas morning! I just wish I'd thought to have my camera at the ready to capture the moment.
I really enjoyed our visit and would have liked to stay longer. Yes the temps were hovering in the 90's, but it's a lot better than the 115's & 120's you were experiencing a couple months ago when we first talked about me coming to visit.
I know you will enjoy and care for it too! It's also really good to hear this machine will never be on "death row" and get kicked to the curb when you go through your semi-annual "This has got to go!" collection thinning diet.
You are both such wonderful hosts! Thank you so much for allowing me to stay in you "guest room" (and I use the term loosely, HA!) with Zoo, the fish & frog and the beautiful variety of flora & fauna!

Nate - happy housewarming! Hubby and I recently moved into a new abode and would love to have someone come by with a present like that! I've got a 260sf room I'm turning into my laundry center to house my 'Tags, Kenmores, Wards, Norge, 1/18s and 'Pools. Room needs painting, lighting, plumbing. Hope to post pics this Winter now that rains are coming to California (thankfully) will be working on the inside of the house.
Congrats Nate on your new home and 1/18! Todd |

The BEST presents are raggity 41-year-old appliances!! :-D It's as good as a Hoover under a tree, or having your heart set on a Crosley!
Ralph--slap!! ;-)
I love the "comfort station" idea, though. I'll install vending machines and urinals next.
Stephanie-- ;-) LOL
Todd -- thank you so much!! I'm so glad to hear you have a fantastic new place yourself, space is a wonderful thing, and it sounds like it has loads of potential! I heard from Ralph that the rains were there, so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you all! |

Thank you for being wonderful and putting up with our living room "guest room suite." On the bright side, it's a far sight bigger than what they gingerly termed a "guest room" in this house (which is tight even for our computers).
Yes, it's Wild America in there, with an aquarium, cat, and significant foliage.
On the bright side, we think of it as "Convertible." :-) |

If you didn't want it... Lol!
Enjoy it, Nate. I rescued this one from the crusher literally seconds away from oblivion as a Kia a few years ago. My first Frigidaire set. Shot video of it and had fun then eventually made a trip down to Kevin's and gave them to him as a Wash In warming gift. I'm happy that one of my orphans found a great loving home. Here's the original thread where I introduced her to the family. The link to the video is in the thread. This one was also the star of a few suds cake pics during that Wash In as well... I do love it!! It's a handsome one, and I tore through six loads last night. It handles three full queen-sized sheet sets with ease, so the Philco can suck it with its seven-sheet count. :-) (However, the dryer tops out at one and a half sets, so there was some load division.)
It's impossible to have a Frigidaire going and not smile. |

What are those GM-era Frigidaires' permanent press cool-down process like? They spun on low speed even with the speed switch on normal, correct? |
