It's a front-loader! It's a top-loader! It's...both, actually. This new LG puts a small top-loader in the pedestal drawer under one of their front-loading behemoths.

I question how many of these LG will sell..but you can be sure it will eventually become a coveted collector's item. I'll never know...all the high-end LG's are too wide to fit through the doorways of my house.

Upside: You'll do a lot of toe-touching bends to stretch out those lower back muscles!

Oh, Frig - I was just about to start a thread dedicated to CES 2015...

Besides the mini-washer, LG also unveiled the 5.8 cu.ft. top loader.

The price??

revvinkevin's profile picture

So let's see... a TOL - LG FL washer sells for what, $1600-ish?   Add this silly little floor level mini washer (for nuisance loads - ala Filter Flo mini-basket?) for another what, another $1200... and we're looking at nearly $3K for the pair?  Geesh!

With the new machines getting SO LARGE, I'll bet they dont do small loads very well and that's why they created this machine.

Either that or they figured they can build a dishwasher in a drawer, why not a washing machine.

Kevin

Matching Dryer...

mrb627's profile picture
I hear the matching dryer will come with a pedestal and a bag of clothes pins, so that 1)drying will keep up with washing, 2)you'll never have to worry about dryer downtime when the service people cannot locate parts, 3)overnight drying is possible without waking the whole house up.

5.8 ft³??? I could fit in it with ease... I mean, come on, at any point someone should realize that it is not worth haveing a machine huge enough to load basicly ANYTHING in it and then add some more!
On the mini-washer: I find it kind of neat. Especially as it fits under every 27" washer. If you have a "small" 3.5ft³ unit, it could expand your wash capacity by that tiny bit you might need. We have 2 seperate full size washers and it‘s the handiest solution for big familys. Better than one washer the size of these two as I can wash 2 completly different loads at the same time. Like a DishDrawer... You get more specific, more detailed laundry care without extra effort and time spent.
As you call it: drying delay. I had bedding wash day last friday. The usual 2 loads plus 3 matress covers (2 loads). I started washing at 9 o‘ clock in the morning, finished washing by 2 o‘ clock. By that time, only one cover was "dry" (they tangeld, horribly, no matter what I did...). I dried load after load till 7 o‘ clock in the evening. Sometimes I wish we had a washer dryer.

I always wonder who green-lights something like this. Maybe LG figures the burst of publicity for this novelty/gimmick is worth the cost of development.

Place your bets now: How long will parts be available for the mini washer? I say three years, tops.

HE suds saver

I doubt an HE SUDS saver would make a lot of sense... Not that I could proof it, but I think dirt is not dilluted enough to reuse it.
Rather, a rinse water saver could work. Just like some HE DW reuse the last rinse water. Just use one rinse bath as the next main wash water. Preferably the first rinse without softner. Would save detergent.
There is actually a washer in Germany that uses that system. But it is only one single special model, and as it is an EU TL washer, it has a pretty small capacity and as it is a low end manufacturer, not the best quality and not that many features.

More from CES 2015: Apps, apps, apps for nearly every appliance. GE, despite being sold to Electrolux, is releasing an entirely new line of appliances tied to the internet; range, dishwasher, fridge, and laundry pair. LG is also stepping up its app game.

Just what we need.  Further encouragement of horrible laundry habits.  I grew up with a mother who basically threw everything in together when she washed.  I had a few things ruined because of that.  Part of the reason I'm such a picky sorter and have such a huge amount of everything.  Advertising for that top loader not only can you wash the comforter that's on the bed, but the rest of the bedding for the bed at the same time.

5.8 cu. ft. washer tub, eh?

My question: How big is the drum on the companion dryer? I foresee overstuffed dryers and clothes emerging from them looking like an accordion-wrinkled mess.

You have a very valid point.  I read that you should have twice the dryer capacity for a wash load to properly tumble.  If you have a 5.8 cu.ft. washer, you would need a dryer that is almost 12 cu ft.  to handle that load properly.

I know with my Maytag it holds 4.4 cu ft. When I do as full load of towels the 8.0 cu. ft companion dryer is almost full when the load is dry.   Now mind you the washer is control packed, whereas the dryer is tumble fluffed, but it illustrates how the clothes need to move freely.

All the years I've been interested in LG products has paid off. Their performance, their features, their designs, their innovations , their prices and their quality has increased my interests in them. What they're doing now is very similar to the original Frigidaire research going on from the late forties through the mid seventies. Priming in the mid to late sixties. What went wrong?

Corporate got greedy.
Seeing what Toyata,Honda, Mazda and Mercedes were doing in production of more fuel effkcient cars made the American brands put their tails between their legs, squint and run. GM slammed the car door on Frigidaire selling no mote than a .name brand to WCI. Ford did the same to Philco and AMC did the same yo Kelvinator. Now GE has followed. Wake up America. Its all our fault for being so greedy.
I'm just glad to see there are still some nice brand new products emerging from this. I don't give a rat's ass if it's made in a foreign country. We had our chance and let corporate ass wipes decide to go global and put factories where spyes could easily get information . I have no mercy for the corporate leaders who lost jobs over their selfish stupidy. I am not at all impressed with ANY of the new Whirlpool Corp., GE, or Electrolux prodicts but am pleased more then anyone can comprehend there's a great company making and backing their products. I know there are ma.y here at this site who disagree. We all have our differences and opinions but, I sold LG and Maytag,GE,Hotpoint, JennAir and Equator. I'd be the customer service provider. So, I'd hear all of the drama and complaints from customers, salesfolk, and service techs. Few were regardkng LG products I sold. Of all the ones I sold, changing the customers choices, one,a. OTR Microwave was returned. Why?? Wrong color!

WASHER OF TOMORROW CLEANING W/BEADS?

Saw an article talking about a new kind of technology for cleaning clothes with beads to possibly be available in another year or two.

The brand of the new machines are XEROS.
As anyone else heard of these machines and what would be your thoughts on them? Using even less water and detergent to clean clothes!! Come on now!

At the rate things are going you might as well just hang them out and let them flap in the breeze and POOF they'll be clean.

Here is the video of the intro.  You can add the Twin to any LG washer.

You can indeed wash a king sized comforter and all the bedding in the new top-load washer. I thought Bob was joking. Nope, it's real.

There is also a mention of creating custom cycles that can be downloaded to the washer through their App "ThinQ" (think). That's cool. I'll bet you can't control individual components of the washer though, I'd have that recirc. spray run on every cycle, every phase.

In time, we'll see the specs for the wee washer add on, how it's plumbed and electric requirements. It certainly won't be for everyone, but LG has a marketing research department, so they can't be completely out of line with the new offerings.

I'd still love one of the giant dryers - the bigger the better in a dryer.

It's plumbed through a T-connection from the washer's inlet hoses.

I figured that's what they'd do, just like the steam dryers. Lots of plumbing going on behind those machines, in homes of many don't know how to operate a hammer and nails to hang a picture.

I wonder if it's down to the fact that very large drummed machines have difficulty balancing small loads?
It does seem to be a bit of a gimmick though.
However, at least you can't blame LG for trying to do something different - at least it isn't boring!
:)

@henene4 are Speedqueens not sold in Germany too?
You can definitely get the gas versions here in Ireland, although they're relatively obscure.

I'm tempted to get one of these : www.thegascompany.ie/iopen24/comm...

I don't have any experience with them but aren't these the machines that explode and have a poor track record in the maintenance and life expectancy areas?  If so what would prevent this unit from having the same fate as the prior LG washers?  Just instead of one to fail now you have two.

I am interested in seeing the drawer washer in action, but imagine it would need to be in the closed position to operate. I think it would be less stable in the pulled out position.

Based on the control panel, it doesn't look like it has many options.

Interesting...

I have to give to it LG and Samsung for inventions. They are really offereing exciting inventions that NO ONE else is topping. Perhaps it would be great if Whirlpool would come up with something different. They don't though.

Although everyone talks about the horror stories of the machines that LG and Samsung make, I truly think it is a very small margin in the scale of how MANY Machines they sell worldwide. In fact...my brother bought the original LG front load washer and dryer that was offerd at Best Buys back when. They love it. It has never let them down. Both the washer and dryer run like a champ. Everything original.

Diaper Pail / Potty Trainer

mrb627's profile picture
It can start out as a diaper pail. Drop the soiled diapers in, push the cycle button labeled #2, and come back to clean diapers.

Then, as the baby grows out of diapers, it can be used as a potty trainer. The heater can be used to warm the seat so it is more comfortable to potty train in the winter.

Afterwards, it can be moved to the kitchen and used as a salad spinner...

Great, Malcolm! Although...I might opt for 'potter's wheel' rather than salad spinner once the tyke is out of diapers, LOL.

While I don't see the mini washer being useful for me, I'm impressed with the front-loader sitting above it. Like the top-loading dispenser system and the controls on the door. The people I've steered to LG front-loaders the past couple of years really like them; and so far, no problems.

As mentioned earlier, these big LG models are too large to fit through the doorway to my laundry room. Were I in the market for a new front-loading pair, I'd probably opt for a higher-end Maytag. 4.5 cu. ft tub, great cycle and option flexibility, and it fits through all the doorways.

Frigidaire's washer brochure used to depict various configurations (side by side, stacked, under counter, etc) for their washers. One option was two washers below, two dryers above. Obviously aimed at large families, but I think this kind of double configuration would be more useful than the LG, in particular because Frigidaires' machines were 27W x 27H x 36H. Parent company Electrolux's machines are taller, 38H, but still could be stacked. I think the double capacity issue was more relevant ten years ago, when 3.5 cu ft was "large".

If you could get it to operate with the lid opened, it could double as one of them there fancy turlets that washes you up afterwards.

Doesn't Electrolux offer a wall mounted washer hanging over a toilet already?

The issues with "exploding washers"was limited. Not every model was faulty. I bought one set for my cousin,Kathy in Maryland back in 2011. She loves it so much that she bought another.pair for her summer home. I don't know where the misinformation originated but LGs track record in repairs is far better then Whirlpool,Kenmore, Speed Queen and GE. Easy to operate and quiet. Samsung not as dependable and service on Samsung is bad here. Not.one service company wants them as a regular. Reminds me of the hell I went through with Equator.

Speed Queen?

Well, I am the opinion that LG is quite good in terms of quality and that spin-sploding was an affair that happenend only under certain circumstances (keep in mind that the problem was not a pure manufacturer mistake and that the problem has been resolved and that the new linies of machines were improofed).
But saying they are better than SQ: No. Simply no. They are more rugged and have a longer planned live span.
They had and have their problems (belts and timers), but by far the average lifespan of SQ is longer than LG. (We see that LGs usually die after 6-10 years. And you had your good part of problems as well, laundromat.)

ACK! I checked into AW.org to turn my brain off while sipping my coffee before starting on this evening's 'to do' list. INSTEAD, I have hours of reading, all of which is so much more interesting than my chores....

Pedestal mini-washer??? Oh, hell no! My arthritis on top of an already bad back has made the Prime Directive in my new place to be that there is NO, as in ZERO, bending & stooping.... zilch, zip, nada, nic, niente, nichts...get the picture? Exceptions are limited to activities I can discuss only in the Dirty Laundry forum. Actually, what I want to know is if there are any PEDESTALS that can be stacked, so I can have a FL high enough for me to reach comfortably.

How does increasing washer capacity improve throughput? At least with old fashioned TL's dryers take longer than washers. My mom has a Kenmore series 80 with a gas dryer more than large enough to hold a full Kenmore load. During extended family gatherings (think winter clothing, towels, and baby clothes) I'd have the first load in the dryer, 3/4 done. The second load would be sitting in a basket, waiting for the dryer, and I'd be starting to load the Kenmore with a third!

No, thank you. My concern is drying capacity. I want LG's 4.3 cu. ft. washer/dryer combo, a separate dryer, and a heated drying rack. That's my realistic choice. My fantasy is a set of stacked Neptunes with a separate dryer. In both cases I'll have either a twin tub or that mini TL (w/1200 r.p.m. spin) ThomasOrtega posted a while back as back-up.

After seeing the Modern Maid Cook-'n-Clean, I want one. I'd rarely use the bottom oven anyway, so I'd gain a cabinet to store stuff I rarely use. But really, I'd prefer either a dishwasher installed like a wall oven or a counter-top model..... all to avoid non-recreational stooping.

Was Modern Maid affiliated with another brand? I've never heard of the company, but I swear I've seen a logo with the same font and symbol before.... Magic Chef, maybe?

Yes, someone here posted about a wall-mounted washer. I looked it up; several models were available. IIRC, they were aimed at the south American market. Anyone recall that?

Thank you. The Portuguese is what triggered the idea of South America.

I only visited Brazil once, almost 15 years ago. It was wonderful for a variety of reasons, but were I to go back now, I'd definitely spend more time looking at the "electrodomesticos". :-)

A definitive would-buy

I'm very unhappy to say that these twin-washers won't come to Europe, as LG told me via e-mail.

The combination range/oven/dishwasher is originally an Italian invention from "Candy"... It is called "Trio".
