If you thought the Electrical Merchandising Magazine I posted last month was cool, check out the latest entry in public domain periodicals into the Ephemera Library!

Fred, Jetcone John, Gansky1 Greg and I were all quite surprised what we found in Appliance Manufacturer. It appears that many more components, parts and trims of major appliances were outsourced to other companies even in the 1950's! The appliance industry it seems was like one big Beam company.

Appliance Manufacturer is a fun magazine to read for any collector or enthusiast of vintage appliances, electronics and other vintage home products. Unlike Electrical Merchandising which covered the sales of appliances, Appliance Manufacturer magazine covered the design and manufacturing areas of Major Appliances, Small Appliances, Small Electrics, Radios, Televisions and other electric home products from the mid-20th century.

Index of the April 1957 Home Laundry Issue

On The Cover: The six combination washer-dryer units being produced and marketed by appliance manufacturers are shown on this month’s cover. These products are the keynote for the discussion of their potential by the manufacturers — Easy, General Electric, Hotpoint, Westinghouse, Philco, Whirlpool. All have their own ideas on how much, how soon. The views are on page 43.

Reading!!

Each advertisement tells as much about the machines as the articles do!

Greg and I are now card carrying researchers of the Library of Congress thanks to the help of Tom Turbomatic. We even can navigate the catacombs deep under the mighty city !! Where secret DunkinDonuts and Starbucks are hidden from the general public!!

From our research I am now reading the history of Tappan and how they developed the
"High Level Oven" system !!
Gotta get back to LOC ASAP !!

Those are military terms !!

Who made it all?

This is such a cool magazine. If you've ever wondered where all the parts and components that make up some of our favorite appliances came from, you'll have all the answers in the pages of this publication. From TV cabinets to water valves and stove clocks, the OEM companies are advertised here. It's been a bit surprising to see how many of the components were NOT made by our favorite brands but instead arrived in crates and assembled into the appliances we covet and cherish now.

This issue is a triple winner for laundry products - an article on the combination washer/dryer market, Maytag assembly line updates and Westinghouse dryer drum fabricating (they seem so small!) as well as a few other secrets of dispenser lore will keep you busy for hours this winter weekend.

Jon and I recently went to the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and with the help of our own Tomturbomatic, pulled some of these issues to look through. Having Robert's beautiful scans of these in digital format is so much easier and, no plane rides!

maybe 20 years ago I was chasing 12 volt coils to go on a washing machine inlet valve. (I was converting a washing machine to 12 volt operation for a solar power system.) I went to a local manufacturer of the valves. They wouldn't sell me just the coils, I had to buy a whole dual valve assembly, but he was prepared to swap the standard 240 volt coils for 12 volt ones. The man behind the counter showed me their pricing sheet, which was interesting - retail price about $40, trade price (for repairers, etc) was $28 and price to washing machine manufacturers was just $4. He let me have it for trade price of $28.
