Well...my very expensive NIB Westinghouse vacuum present from Me to Me has me wanting to Westinghouse the kitchen.....Im not too picky as to 30 or 40 inch, just so its a real Westinghouse in good shape,my dream range would be a nice Terrace Top..but the only deal breaker is color...must be white, pink or mint aqua...NOO yellow avocado or coppertone....40s thru mid 60s is fine..

The Continental oven in Grand Rapids is really nice.

The big, wide 'I LOVE LUCY' 40" looks like it could go from "Ricardo" to "Mertz" easily, but it's most likely to work fairly dependably...

Hans, I know someone in CT with  a 40-inch Westinghouse 'Commander' range for sale.   If you'd like me to get you some more pictures and further information, just send me a PM or email me.

I know it has been used for 50+ years, but it has been very well taken care of!

That Continental wall oven is a looker, for sure!

I was able to spend some quality time with a couple of Westy ranges while in MD two weeks ago at John's warehouse and Moparguy's collection and I can totally relate to your yearning, Hans. What a beautiful range Westinghouse made - really gets the blood racing!

Check out this beauty of Jeff's - Jon and I were both entranced! I was scanning our local CL ads for this one. Good luck on your search!

Those Commanders are a thing of beauty.  I love that slightly asymmetrical thing they do with the controls.

I know that you're no fan of GE's Sensi-Temp or Frigidaire's Heat Minder, and I get that - both depend on parts that are getting HTF.

But what on Earth do you have against self-cleaning? Besides the obvious advantage of having the oven clean itself, vintage SC ovens had more insulation, thus improving the performance of the oven over non-self-cleaning models. Consumer Reports used to say that the improved insulation could actually help owners recover the cost of the self-cleaning feature over the life of the range, due to reduced operating costs.

I am very curious!

yeah, me too. Should I know something about non-selfcleaning ovens that is worth considering as an advantage or other reason(s)?

Self Cleaning..

= More gadgets to go wrong...more stuff to tear up that you cany find parts for..I dislike self cleaning ovens just as I despise frost free refrigerators!..

I can definately say that my '53 Westinghouse has a very well insulated oven. It stays hot about twice as long as the 1 year old Tappan (Frigidaire) self-clean oven in the rental house I'm currently staying at. It's not a terrible range, but it's poorly constructed compared to the Westinghouse.

My reference was to vintage self-cleaners, which were heavily insulated. Today's self-cleaners are built so poorly you can brand yourself brushing up against the door during a self-clean cycle. There's no comparison between a '60s SC range and today's.

You know what you like and what you don't like, but for me, saying that self-cleaning is "one more thing to go wrong" is like saying air-conditioning is "one more thing to go wrong," LOL.

Now AC

Is something I will NOT do without!!!!I hate and despise hot weather!!LOL..Really though, I don't dirty up a oven that much, I never broil anything and rarely roast anything uncovered..A turkey or something of that nature I cook in a vintage electric roaster.

Never had a self-cleaning oven feature break. Is that luck? We have a GE Stove (from the early 80's) with a self-cleaning feature. The oven lamp broke and a we've had to replace the panel light…and that's all. The self-cleaning feature is a dream.

But Hans - you sound like my mom. She wanted a car…with no power windows, no radio(my dad got that changed) and not much of anything that made life too easy or comfortable for us …in fact, air conditioning came very late to our house, compared to other homes. My mom insisted, "more things to break and I don't mind as long as we have a fan."

If not for my mom's attitude, it's hard to understand why someone wouldn't want the conveniences.

So, sail on Hans - and good luck in your oven quest.

I Guess....

danemodsandy's profile picture
....A lot of it has to do with how one likes to cook.

I like a fair number of things that are spattery - meat loaves, roast chickens, ham, baked pork chops, etc. And I vastly prefer open roasting to covered roasting. So, self-cleaning is nice for those.

But there is one thing above all others that makes self-cleaning desirable to me - turkey. Now, I like a few slices of turkey breast as much as the next person, maybe more, but I hatehatehatehateHATE the smell of a turkey roasting, which hangs in the house until the oven is cleaned and the house is well aired.

For banishing turkey odors alone, self-cleaning is worth it. There has been many a Thanksgiving where I did without turkey rather than deal with that smell. A poorly-maintained outhouse smells like Chanel No. 5 compared to the stench of a turkey roasting.

TURKEY!!!

I LOVE the smell of a turkey roasting!!I do make meat loaves and occasionally will fix pork chops and roast chicken, but I always use a low temperature to reduce spattering. But NOTHING smells like Thanksgiving or CHRISTMAS like a turkey roasting!

RE Air conditioning..

We ALWAYS had window units when I was growing up...Dad hated air cond. but he was over ruled by my Mother and I....and Dr Frazier my allergy doctor who said NEVER open a window!!! And to this day I don't!!!We didn't have a dishwasher and there is not enough money in the world to make me do without one..We got our first microwave in 78 and I regard it as something that takes up counter space...I have one but don't like it or use it for anything more than melting butter or warming up food.

Like I said: The Ricardos had it in their apartment, and I'm sure sooner or later Fred Mertz bought one (after finding one at some Used Appliance Joint!) for Ethel, years later...
