I have an old Maytag A606 that performs fine as long as I keep it on REGULAR (faster) agitation speed. But, when I press GENTLE, it stops. The motor doesn't hum, and all I can hear is the timer ticking. I CAN "coax" it into GENTLE if I then hit REGULAR, and quickly back to GENTLE. It will continue to agitate until it hits the drain/spin part of the cycle, at which point it will once again STOP.
I've tried pushing and pulling on the motor, tapping it, and I've pulled off the spade terminals on the top of the motor and cleaned them all to no avail.
I took a couple terminals off the timer and did the same thing. I even shorted the orange and yellow wires going to the back of the "fabric" regular/gentle switch- ZILCH! I'm really suspecting either the motor windings or the mysterious centrifugal 2 speed motor switch inside the motor, but I don't have a clue on how to check this. I'm not opposed to purchasing a new motor, as long as I can be reasonably sure that's what the problem is.
One last note- I used to hear some squeaking and sometimes a low "growling" from the agitator, (possibly a dry bearing), but with more frequent use, and running a couple cycles with hot water, this noise has disappeared, but is it possible that a dry or worn bearing could be loading the motor down, and THAT'S why it can't go into GENTLE??
Any guidance would be appreciated
- Jim

Long story short

You need a new motor. Sorry.
