Downers Grove, IL is a very nice upper middle class western suburb of Chicago. So you could say that set is in the Chicago area.

That RCA console that looks like a hutch, I have the exact unit. Unfortuneatly it is located at my dad's in Minnesota. Still in my old bedroom. One of these years, I'll bring it down here to Arizona. Not sure where I'll put it once it is down here, but I'll figure that out at that time.

I wouldn't mind having that Magnavox. I already have one from 1959 in an all black cabinet. I love watching TV on it.

Zenith Combo

ovrphil's profile picture
My dad bought a zenith combo - but it was a behemoth taking up about 8 feet of our 11' x 12' living room(mom not happy). That was an outstanding stereo and record player, in a walnut cabinet, Danish modern leg. We've talked about here before -" Zenith..the quality goes in before the name goes on" Here are some more Zeniths shown by a avid collector/restorer that are great to view (good music, too)

…and I wanted to mention, but couldn't amend my posting (will change that this month)…our combo Zenith had a color tv with remote.

Justin - is that wall unit just a stereo and record player? I was wondering it that came with a black and white television, too?

With "wall mount" you mean the RCA "Hutch"? If so, that is just a radio and record player. No TV. Not sure if the ever made a "Hutch" unit like that with a TV.

There's no TVs in those "hutch" RCAs...

firedome's profile picture
I've had several of them, aka the "RCA Mark II", ours was a 3VF61 Series, the last 2 numbers designated the furniture style: Danish Modern, Provincial etc. They were fairly TOL for RCA around '60-62. The electronics were good quality, 4 x EL-84 output tubes and decent sized open frame transformers, decent FM/AM front-end design. The speaker set left something to be desired as it was totally "open baffle" ie no sealed acoustic suspension or even ported cabinet, all 6 (2 x 12" woofers, 2 mid, 2 tweeters, all paper cones) speakers were mounted in one common open compartment with a flimsy fiberboard backing, leading to less than ideal acoustic reproduction. The woofer magnets were kind of shrimpy, and the other 4 are mediocre components. The furniture was very nice grade and very attractive. While sounding decent enough, the Mark II was hardly high-end, or even much better than average for a console unit, personally I liked Maggies and Zeniths we've had better. Still like RCA "Mark" Series though, one of the more interesting consoles.
We had a huge Bell console once that was even larger, built as part of an actual bookcase, with all the components and speakers housed in the lower part. Heavy as heck.

Still have a Mark II complete 6 speaker + front mounting board assembly in perfect condition, even has original speaker cloth on it, suspended from the ceiling over our basement "electronics test lab" bench, to use for checking out amps and such. Will probably chuck it out next year when we move, so if anyone wants the whole shebang (6 speakers + crossovers + mounting board) it's yours for the asking.

firedome: Your description of the Mark II reminded me of the RCA I just acquired this weekend(pictured) but it's far from a Mark II in size, thank God. What it does have in common with the Mark II is the flimsy fiberboard, meager looking magnets for the dual 12" woofers..etc. I have a '57 tubed Maggie, no Zeniths and to be honest, I tend to look at those more than the RCA's. I'm like wood and have done some woodworking, and this RCA cabinet, though not in style to today's trends, is really nice. And the sound is appreciably decent. Yet, looking at all that space back there it continually begs the question from me, "doesn't it need some sound baffling material, fiberglass, insulation, towels, anything? " LOL! It lights up beautifully and sounds surprisingly good for having sat for so long in a dusty area, but it's far from prime time presentable. So, just acquiring the RCA, I was curious about the Mark II having a tv, and you hit on some other things that reminded me…

Thanks for clarifying, Will and Roger.

Re RCAs

If you really want to hear something, play a record on a TOL RCA such as the hutch model...then play the same record on a mid line Magnavox or Motorola, the tone and power of the M or M will blow the RCA out of the water.

I have a Fisher Philharmonic at the Michigan house that I'm sure will do the same as the Maggie's and Zeniths. I hope to find that Magnavox Imperial and dream about a C.Grand. I'd be pleased to find a tube-era Zenith. But I'm like you Hans - picky picky. I see so many consoles that don't do much for me, in quality of materials, design and proportions. Well, that's part of the adventure here. Thanks for your opinion! :-)

Phil... does that RCA say "Orthophonic" on the dial? It could have been the series that directly proceeded the "Marks", or a concurrent but different/more compact series.

Oddly RCA also made a series of "Orthophonic" HiFi in England, they were big, high power, and expensive discrete components on the order of McIntosh components, they even looked like them with big top-mounted potted transformers etc. I had one of the pre-amps once, the build quality was like Leak, all turret board military-type construction, very impressive. They sold a small number of them here through RCA dealers for the very few that wanted the best of the best. Nowadays one of the mono amps alone can sell in the $2-3000 range. Very rare and desirable. RCA did briefly around 1962 also sell a Fisher-type component AM/FM receiver called the MX-5, and they are also fairly rare, but not in the English-made Orthophonic component class, most people paying what the MX-5 cost wanted the Fisher name so they didn't sell all that well and after this RCA abandoned the mid-high end component market completely.

the RCA component receiver was the MX-7... working from memory is increasingly problematic these days LOL ... I must have been channeling the Miata MX-5!
For the curious there's some pics of the RCA MX-7 if you Google it. They are a nice sounding and very well designed receiver, RCA could match anyone when they put their mind to it.

TWO for $130! Record Player, Magnavox Mid 50s Split Console

ovrphil's profile picture
If it were closer - gone!

AD: " Price Reduced, Mid-'50s all-Tube Split Console Magnavox Record Player with 4 12in speakers for sale.

The record player comes in two pieces, both are about 18 inches deep, 28 inches wide and stands about 3 feet tall (on skinny legs). They look like tall, solid side table furniture. The top of one side opens to reveal the mono record player with auto-feed mechanism and includes an adapter for your 45's. The auto feed is pretty great. You can load up 5. . . may be 10 records at a time and just let them play one after the other.

The front of the unit is split in two parts: the door on the front swings open to reveal the controls for the record player and the radio with upright storage for your records. The otter half hides two large 12 inch speakers. The amp is 100% tubes.

The other console looks like an identical match to the first except the top lifts to reveal a deep storage area and there's even more storage for records in the front of this second unit. It connects with a wire to the main unit to power it's 2 12inch speakers for a total of 4 12inch speakers. The wire's pretty long, so you could place each unit one either side of a large couch or place one unit in a different room.

"This beautiful, tastefully vintage sound machine sounds fantastic!" you say? Well, metaphorically speaking it does. It needs a run through with a professional. The sound sometimes goes between 100% and 20% volume with a bit of added muddiness over the years. It could be a loose wire, or it could need new tubes. Other than that, it's pretty great.

Selling both units together for $130, price reduced."

Nice Magnavox Hi-0Fis-On the one where the two speakers were shown-this unit is a lucky survivor. These sets often get plundered for their speakers-"G-Fiddilists" love them for their amps.Didn't know about the RCA High end separate components. The receiver shown has missing 6973 output tubes. Those were used in Seeburg jukeboxes and other RCA amps. And the 6973 tube was used in video DA amps in TV stations. And as audio DA amps, too. The two peice Magnavox unit may have been a mono-to stereo converted unit.Like how both cabinets have record racks for the "DJ's favorites"!

Roger - I just saw your question to me and interesting notes about RCA, England and Orthophonics….my apologies.

IF you referring to the RCA with the two doors open and the backside view in Reply # 13 that's an Orthophonic with a dual-amplifer(14-tube) that works in stereo with the record and tape only. I wouldn't mind if it was a mono, if it was worth 2-3K. :-) So, were the Orthophonic stereos made here in the USA, predecessors to the Marks? Mine was built in August 1958(deemed a 1959 model). I can see that the MX7 (and other MX) were no doubt made much later than 1958/59.

here's a closer look of my unit

Yes the US RCA Orthophonics

firedome's profile picture
preceded the Marks, which were '61/2/3 era.

The English RCA Orthophonic line was in another class altogether, the McIntosh, Marantz, Fairchild class... as good as it got back then. RCA also dabbled in separate components earlier in the US in the 1953-56 era with some separate Mono components like the SP-10 and SP-20 mono amps, also preamp and speakers, quite nice but not as high-end or high power as the English RCA units that came along a bit later. Few of them were sold in the US.

GE also had a nice discrete component line briefly, made in Auburn NY, near here.
It also used 6973 tubes, like the MX-7, jukeboxes and guitar amps also used them. I have a NOS quad of 6973 up on eBay right now (Sylvania).

Here's a pair...

firedome's profile picture
of the RCA New Orthophonic UK built amps. I think this pair brought well over $4k on eBay iirc. I'd love to have these, they are far prettier than any of the McIntosh or Marantz tube amps I've had in the past (quite a few). These used KT-66 output tubes which are a Brit version of the 6L6GC.

Still have here an RCA BA-4A amp that was built as a monitor amp for recording studios, also 6L6gc type outputs and an advance toroid transfomer and tons of plug in cylindrical electrolytic capacitors, it's rarer and probably better than the New Orthos above, but not nearly as pretty!

Impressive - RCA

ovrphil's profile picture
I see a pair of RCA 1620 tubes with metal connectors on top in the BA-4C amp. I have seen these kinds of tubes before..want to say that my old floor model Zenith with am/fm/sw bands had one of those connectors on one of the tubes. I'm weird, but just looking at the tube brings back good memories of looking at the tubes light up and hearing the word in the early 60's over SW. Do you use that BA-4C in any system right now or is it strictly a commercial application type amplifier?

Plug-in cylindrical electrolytical capacitors - wouldn't it be nice if we could replace all our electrolytic caps that way. No soldering, just plug in and go?

Well, there are much more expensive amps I've seen in Audio magazines, so maybe $4K isn't a bad price? But it's hard to look at my Orthophonic amp with any interest after seeing those amazing English Orthophonics. I learn something new and interesting all the time here.

Plug in caps were common in commercial-industrial electronic gear.Made for very fast replacement of caps.At the SW transmitter site where I work we used to have a pair of Technical Materials Co. 40Kw SW sideband transmitters that used plug in caps in all of the LV power supplies. That was one example of gear using the plug in socketed caps. Now those transmitters are gone.Had to be taken out to make way for new switchgear. They were no longer used. They used to be used as a backup program dist source.
The RCA Mon amp shown-Have a companion audio processor amp to this.Came from a defunct Radio station near Baltimore.
The UK RCA Orthophonic amps appear to be very nice.Would love to try some of those.Never seen them before.KT 66 tubes-have seen those occasionally replacing 6L6 tubes in guitar amps. Some guitarists liked them better than 6L6 and insisted on them in their amps-usually Fender.

The RCA BA-4 series...

firedome's profile picture
were built for commercial monitoring duty in recording and transmitting applications, but are wide band full fidelity amps, unlike many commercial units, which were more PA oriented, or restricted in frequency response for various reasons, and thus not so suitable for home audio without modification.

The 1620s are just a low noise version of 6J7s, and 1622s are low noise versions of 6L6GCs. The plate cap connections are generally avoided in consumer gear due to high voltages, not good for little (or big!) fingers, much safer to route it thru base pins.

Our BA-4 is slated, after a re-build, for duty in a future bi-amp situation, where it will drive a single low-frequency 15" speaker system 35-500 Hz. The top end over 500 Hz will be a pair of speakers with ADS midranges & tweeters, and possibly high frequency horns, driven by a stereo Magnavox 9303-00 (4 x EL84) power amp from a console.

Rex: do you know a source for the plug in electrolytics? Can't find them via my usual source... I'd like to replace all 7 if I can find them.

Top cap connector on tubes like 6J7 and such. This was not a plate connection but the grid connection. It is safe to touch----BUT-- if you do be prepared for a loud startling noise thru the speakers of the system the amp is connected to.I tested devices with these tubes as pass-fail by turning the gain down and touching the top connector. If you heard hum or noise the amp is most likely working.1622 tube-low noise-RF version of a 6L6GC these were sometimes encountered as RF buffer amps in AM transmitters,Modulator input amps(Speech input stages)in AM transmitters. The original Continental Electronics Variable Frequency source for the 420A transmitters here used those tubes in the sources output stage. When 1622 tubes became NOA,used regular 6L6GC-they would work-but got short life from them. The Continental Electronics device was replaced by solid state frequency Synthesizers. The old devices got surplused-don't know where they went from there.
I don't know of any new sources for new plug in caps-wished I did.The caps that used to be in our parts stock were actually older JAN parts-since this plant is a gov't agency-parts often came from other agencys. The caps were old-had to "form" them in an old Sprague "Tel-Ohm-O-Mike" cap tester before using them in the TMC transmitters.Otherwise you would trip the supply breaker or blow the fuse.Once they were formed-the caps were OK.They were old when we had them!Since the TMC's were scrapped-the caps must have gone with them-too bad-I could have used them. You could always wire an octal socket in the device you want to use them in.Sadly, you may have to go to wired caps unless you can find the plug-ins on the gov't surplus markets.Electronic gear made for Gov't use used as lot of those plug in caps.More so than commercial gear.Roger--wish you luck in finding the caps. And like your idea of the Bi-amp with an RCA amp and the Magnavox ones.Wish you luck on this.It is still impossible to find caps for my McIntosh "60" amps.If only I could get the caps would be easy to recap my amps and put them back into use.None of the modern suppliers carry caps that are over 450V.I need-525-600V.Debating the idea of using oil filled caps-but on an outboard chassis. What it may boil down to.Oil filled caps are easily obtained.See LOTS of them in transmitter power supplies. And the 1622 tubes used for video amps and DA's,too.Older TV stations.

6J7 tube and equivelants-these tubes common in older Gates and RCA broadcast consoles as mic and TT preamp stage tubes.Ampex 300 used the "red" can 1620 version in the PB preamp stage. And have found these tubes in many older radios and amps.Radios-IF stage,RF stage tubes-and amps-low level preamp stages. One Seeburg jukebox amp I used to have had one of these tubes.Other Ampex PB amps had them-thats where I tested them by touch to see if the amp worked-edit decks in radio stations.

Like the oil cap idea for the Mc's

firedome's profile picture
Marantz was one of few consumer amps to use them, in their M2 and M5 amps. AFAIC Marantz made the best quality consumer-grade tube electronics of anybody. And current prices reflect that, unfortunately, could never afford a pair of M5s today.

1622s are still avaialble, just got a few NOS RCAs from a guy who has tons of them.
The BA-4 has RCA black plate 6L6GCs now, but wanted the original 1622s for it.

Top connectors - in power output tubes like the 1622s and in other common ones like 807s, not a good idea.

Yes,top caps on power tubes like 807 and such-it is the PLATE connector and is high voltage. In transmitters top plate connector tubes must be behind an interlocked access panel to prevent shocks and burns.Consumer gear the same sort of thing-but 807's in consumer gear is VERY RARE.Maybe in "Ham" radio sets-but in those the tubes are behind an interlocked cover or door.

Remember when Stromberg-Carlson made PA amps, telephones, radios and such.Esp remember their central PA systems in schools-the main unit usually with TT,radio tuner, tape deck would be in the admin section of the school-often by the principals office. Then there was a clock-speaker panel in the classrooms.Often the principal and other admin folks would make annucements over the system before your teacher started the class for the day.And at Christmastime-Christmas music was played thru the system.

Rex -I had the same experiences. The principal's office had a large panel with as many switches on it as rooms for the school, including the gym. Select the rooms and press the heavy-weighted stainless steel mike, and you were "live". Those were such good memories, actually - much sower times. I was in all our schools between college, as a night-time custodian, to help pay for tuition. I know the Stromberg-Carlson name, but I can't remember the brand in our school district. I do remember times when the principal turned on the system and a huge feedback came over the speakers - that woke everyone up. LOL!

was a Rochester NY outfit, became a big player in the telephone business, and much later on post-war made some very nice Hi-Fi component amps, tuners, receivers, speakers, even a turntable, and high-end consoles that had their discrete components mounted in them, like Fisher and Pilot. I have a late '50s brochure around here somewhere showing their Hi-Fi line, and have had a few of the products, all were excellent. Prior to the mid '50s besides telephone equipment they were also well known for floor and table radios as well, and TVs in the 50s. In the early 60s they were absorbed by General Dynamics, and more or less abandoned their consumer product lines at some point.

I do see, occasionally, some of those Stromberg-Carlson radios/consoles that look very nice. Your information, Roger, just brings a little more appreciation to a name I'm not too familiar with.

RE Stromberg Carlson

In 1952 My Parents went to O P Lutz furniture Co in Lenoir NC and bought a Stromberg Carlson Hi Fi, it was still around when I was a kid, it had a 10 inch speaker facing forward, and a 12 inch facing the floor, it really had some thumping bass , I really would like to find another one,as I remember Mother said it cost over 200.00 which was a fortune back then,They saved for a year to buy it.

Anyone got pictures and stats on SB Hi-Fi systems-The products SB made I have seen have been the school PA's,PA amps ,and phones. Also another school sound system maker was DuKane.Have the manual for a DuKane system that was at the DuPont factory out here.I am sure its long been replaced. The DuKane unit had two 50W amps with PP 5881 tubes. And it was 70v Line.At a swap shop bought a couple plastic tubfulls of books-they came from a former DuPont Engineer-made for interesting and useful reading.

Found the S-C brochure

firedome's profile picture
showing their TOL Hi-Fi component line for 1959. Problem is I'm without scanner at the moment. Meanwhile here's a good link to some S-C stuff:

www.audiophool.com/MadeInRoch.htm...

They had a pretty comprehensive line-up, my brochure doesn't show the consoles or radios, but the better consoles had the S-C Hi-Fi components in them, such as the ASR-333 and matching tuner, I've had one of them, along with some of S-C's Custom 400 components. The weird ASP-422 amp uses the rare and oddball 6DY7 tube that has both push-pull stages in one tube! I've been wanting one of these for some time but haven't run across one yet.

Post# 809012 , Reply# 46   2/13/2015 at 03:28 (3,350 days old) by tolivac (greenville nc)

Excellent info on the SC Hi-Fi gear-The 6DY7 tube is a real oddity.Would have been neat if it caught on.Makes me think of an 815 Tube-two power tetrodes in one envelope.Plate connectors on the top of the tube.I have seen 815's in older-early FM transmitters and TV transmitters.Typically used as frequency multiplier stages.Ampex used 815 tubes as bias-erase oscillators in Ampex 300 Rec/Pb amps.Put the machine into record mode and hold a neon lamp near the 815-it will light if the stage is oscillating.
I have one of those Kodak amps in a Kodak "Pagent" 16MM projector.Got it for free from the dump. The machine does run.Missing the speaker. It would be the one with the 35L6 tubes in the output.Kodak projectors were common along with Bell&Howell ones for classroom proectors used in schools.A few times I was assigned to be the impromptu projectionist for running a film. The boys in that class got their turns!Teachers did not like being projectionists-so they had one of the students do it.Occasionally a film got broke.

Difficult to find, but that CG looks "crusty"

twintubdexter's profile picture

That's the first CG in that vintage/style that  I've seen that did not have remote control...but I'm no expert. The multiplex adaptor is where the complex RF remote unit would normally be. Notice the knob holes for the remote on/off controls in the changer compartment are covered. I suppose this is a later model since the"green eye" tuning indicator is now an Astrosonic-style meter. Also unusual to see the "fish hook" record changer. No "record reject" button on the CG plaque either, pity.

This Concert Grand has been on the local Craigslist for one month, first advertised with no price and now showing up at $1,500. You'd need to want one very badly.

MCM shows

This was the week of the Mid-Century Modern shows in Palm Springs. There are many venues (for a price) to explore. No time or money to do a visit and pick up that CG at the same time. Instead, we're just hunkering down as a winter of much less intensity buckles the tree limbs with ice and cold continues. Twintubdexter, are you out there - just pick this up for me and I'll be out in my dreams to pick it up.

Whats with the abundance of CG Hi-Fis on the West Coast? But NONE in my area?Just remember my Moms-hers had the Multiplex unit just like on the back of the one shown. Hers didn't have any remote controls.Noticed in the picture of one of those units the rear speaker cab access panel was removed.Needed for proper operation.Other folks say around here Magnavoxes were indeed rare.-there were no dealers in Greeville.Closest was Raleigh.

On with the hunt!

twintubdexter's profile picture

My "expert" friend in Tennessee with his huge collection of Magnavox stereos says that most of them were made in Greeneville...Greeneville Tennessee that is. The plant, long shuttered, is still there where his Aunt was employed for many years. For some reason, as far as Craigslist, I have seen more well-cared for Magnavox consoles in Northern Oregon and Washington than anywhere else. My CG popped up in Eugene Oregon, was $85 reduced to $40. A very nice lady was selling the contents of her late parent's home. I actually gave her $100 since she worked with a shipper for me, then I sent her a small gift afterwards. The point here is that you need to keep looking and eventually you'll discover one at a reasonable price and perhaps even in your own area. It's not like you're trying to find another Hope Diamond.

By the way, my TN friend says that he prefers the sound of his Imperials to his Concert Grands. I guess it's a matter of taste and how well your hearing is.

Two of my friends CG's...can you guess which one is real wood and which one is the faux pas?

Right now NOT looking--maybe I will stumble into a CG at a swap shop or yard sale.Just hoping. They might as well be the Hope diamond in my area. The Hi-Fi on he left in the picture looks like the real "woody" model. The tuner-preamp on that one looks just like what my Moms had.Hers was the "modern" type case. She liked Early American furniture-surprized she didn't get one like what is in the picture.Got many, many hours of listening from her unit!-Records and the radio.Later CD's.Connected a CD player into the Aux input on her unit.Worked really well! She then played more CD's than records.

I've seen this advertised before, I'm convinced there couldn't be two of them. It was pricer the first time around. Even though it now says the turntable's not working I still think it's worth $150. Looks like an all-wood cabinet, not too gaudy for Mediterranean and it has those very cool Motortola round tuners...Vibrasonic too. Floating around out there with the Queen Mary.

Yes,LOTS of console audiophiles in the Palm Springs area. The Hi-Fis are really common there.Guess there are Fisher,Scott, and Magnavox dealers there at one time-high income area.Fisher and Scott Hi-Fis are others audiophiles are looking for.BUT-In the Fisher unit-where is the center spindles for the TT-beleive these Garrard TTs had two-short for single-manual play and tall for changer play.Uusually they were stored in a clip inside the TT compartment-same with the 45 RPM adaptor.

I don't recall seeing that Fisher console. Must have been one of my "bad hair" days. Actually there isn't a lot of vintage here in the Desert. Back in the 70's when I was in college there was practically nothing between Palm Springs and Indio, just sand. Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and Indian Wells are all kind of "new." I think when people move they tend to leave vintage items behind. In most cases the pickins are slim.

You do find plenty of items like this advertised, currently @ $60

The Garrard turntable..

firedome's profile picture
in that ~'62 Fisher Ambassador IV was the Type A. The 660A amp used 7591 output tubes for about 25w/ch, we've had at least one of those over the last 35 yrs or so. The Custom Electra was the more common slightly lower line model that you see more often. by about '64 the Ambassador became a hybrid unit with less than desirable Germanium transistors in amp output stage, but the pre-amp/tuber section remained all tubes. Some of these later Ambassadors had Dual 1009 turntables.

Germanium transistros---YUCKKKKK!!!!!Get those FIREBOTTLES in there--MUCH better!
7591 tubes--seen these in Fender G-fiddle amps, power amps in older Lowrey Organs, and MC225 McIntosh power amps.Have this amp-at the time I bought it-7591 tubes not available. So changed the amps to use EL-34.Works great.Just had to change the bias resistors.Replaced the bias diodes while at it.Ran the amp from a separate full wave 5U4 tube supply-so much better than the factory voltage double solid state thing. Also the 7591 was a popular tube in Hi-Fi receivers made in those times-compact,efficient and took up less space than EL-34 or 6L6 type tubes.

Lots of Fishers, Scotts, Sherwoods etc.

firedome's profile picture
used 7591 tubes, especially integrated amps and receivers. The new Russian version that is now made isn't bad, but some are taller than the originals and won't fit in cabinets. The similar Novar based 7868 last time I looked is still not reproduced, so owners of receivers amps & receivers that use them, like the Fisher 400, are stuck with finding vintage tubes at rather high prices.

Post# 810996 , Reply# 70   2/25/2015 at 00:51 (3,338 days old) by tolivac (greenville nc)

The Novar 7868-Used to have a Pioneer receiver that used these tubes-The unit worked well-Sold it to someone that needed an amp.The new, taller Russian 7591-never seen one-but owners of older Lowrey organs should be able to use them-plenty of room! They also should fit the Fender Guitar amps that used them-the tubes will have to run upside down, though.Usually this isn't a problem. The other electronics in the amp get cooked from the heat. You have to replace electrolytic caps in these amps often-esp if they get hard use.

That "Titanic-sized" Embassy stereo in Phoenix is really nice. I wonder if it's still available? The musical-themed doors are classy. I always wanted one of those Garrard Lab 80 turntables with the Afromosia wood tone arms.

Joe If you're interested in the Embassy, maybe you can store it in the interim? Although a boat, it's a nice stretch of furniture and equipment. I wonder, though, just how it sounds in whatever room it would be set into? Just contact the seller to see if it's still available.

I've found alot of things on CL that I've passed on to others or just passed up for other reasons. A few days ago, I found a Solid State Pilot stereo console(been looking for one). I was about to go for it, and then decided the room isn't here right now.(attached photos of unit that sold after 3 days, just a few miles from me).

The Embassy six times the cost of the Pilot I wanted - easier to say no, and it would be nice to have room for something this big….but it has a lot of nice details.

The way I look at it, if members on here can find room for 25 washing machines I can always squeeze in another console stereo (or jukebox or pinball machine.)

Hesitated to post this ebay listing...

twintubdexter's profile picture

...especially since it's in non-working order, but this GE Spanish Colonial Revival console is so nice. General Electrc did have some very nice cabinets at one time. You could tinker around with it and it may come back to life. And then you could always call GE Factory Service and be told "what ya got there lady is a nice piece of firewood."

In Tempe, Arizona @$325.

That Embassy Hi-fi system is indeed impressive-but all of those DOORS a flappin while you are playing it!the console does indeed look neat with the doors shut.Used to have a Garrad Lab80 TT-NICE-wished I still had it.One of the few "Changers" that had manual TT quality arm.

I can hear all the hair turning white as the folks here read

112561's profile picture

the words "SOLID STATE STEREO" "ALL TRANSISTOR" on the control panel of the General Electric El Cortez............ dundunDUUUNNNN.............

I know from reading some audiophile opinions that the electronics of the GE are rather convoluted, but if someone managed to get this thing and restore it to working order, they may get a pleasant performer. OKAY, it's no Magnavox Concert Grand, or Fisher President, or components assembled from the finest materials in the known universe, but it deserves a tad more consideration than some GE turncoat's opinion of "a nice piece of firewood". How dare someone buy and enjoy something like this?? How dare someone believe it emits even one pleasing note? Cretins--morons........

I'm diggin' the Spanish Colonial GE and I don't really like Spanish Colonial. These cabinets are unique - USA made(vs China today) and well, if you have room, they do double duty as design and function, not that some would really care. It's so clean, compared to so many other GE consoles.

I thought it was worth assembling some photos here again.

PHILR - THANK YOU! I was looking for some brochures on RCA a few days ago after finding that Mark I RCA Vista tv/stereo combo. Thanks alot.

I really enjoy member's posts and comments presented here on Automaticwasher.org, much more so than on dedicated vintage audio sites. Threads here are much more interesting and seem friendlier too. Members seem to know something about everything. Many thanks.

My Aunt Doris had a Magnavox that looked like the one in reply #92. However, I don't remember it having another cabinet with speaker and record storage. Was that something that was sold separately?

I'm not sure what happened to it after she went to assisted living; it may be in storage with most of her other things she didn't take.

The two peice Magnavox system was most like started as a single peice mono-then a few years later stereo came into being.Magnavox like many other Hi-Fi gear makers at that time offered ways to make the conversion to stereo without having to buy too much other equipment. In the unit above-the TT would be equipped with a stereo cartridge. Then a stereo amp added-and the second speaker-cabinet.It too may have its own amp. These are desirable among early stereo gear fans.Remember Magnavox put some quality Jensen/Magnavox speakers in those cabinets!-and they could have been bi-amped to top it off.

When Magnavox entered the stereo era, you could buy the main unit already set up for stereo, it would have to be set for internal speakers only IF you never got the companion speaker/storage unit or matching television with the second channel speakers in it. You'd be able to hear all the program from your stereo records and they wouldn't be ruined because they'd be played with the stereo pickup. It would only come out mono like I say, if you only bought the main set. Then of course, there was a kit where you could adapt your mono Magnavox console FOR stereo play, and you could buy matching, or close to it second channel console. And for people who really didn't care if they had stereo or not, they could change out their monaural cartridge/stylus for a stereo one, so they wouldn't ruin new recordings.

Rex and Alan describe what I would like to get - the external matching speaker for my Magnavox model number 294H w/142CC amp. It has a dual 78/LP needle feature with three wires for stereo, and a "Both/External/Internal" speaker selector in the turntable cavity. This external speaker I'm looking for has an amplifier included in the speaker cabinet, but I'm not 100% on that.

What a very nice Magnavox Hi Fi. Gotta love those sliding glass panels in front and on top. When I was in school a friend's mom had one in black with gold veining in the glass. Having been a "Bobby Soxer" in her youth, she'd blast her Frank Sinatra records on it. I recall that it sounded just great.

I have the 293C Magnasonic without the tuner, I'm thinking mine could be 1956, it has the removable head shell on the tonearm. I'd love to find the matching speaker for mine, although it would just still be expanded monaural, and upgrade the cartridge to play stereo discs.

Joe and Alan - thanks for sharing your experiences. I've never seen a black lacquer(?) model - must be the oriental design, maybe?

Alan - is this one here on YouTube like yours:

I've seen the removable head shells. Didn't Magnavox offer a different shell for playing stereo and then swap out for 78's?

Thanks guys.

Found this on Phoenix Craigslist. Ended up taking a look at it and purchasing it. I got it home on Tuesday. Not sure why the ad is still up, but since it is, II figured I'd add it to this post.

It is a Seeburg jukebox made in about 1967. Seeburg built these for the home market. They hold the 33 1/3rpm LP Albums. They hold 50 of them. Each side is a two digit number from 00 to 99. To select the side, one just dials the two digit number on the dialer. The original owners recently passed away and their son and daughter-in-law are clearing out the estate. It works, but does need some adjustment. It also came full with records.

This is actually my second unit. The other one is identical and has been restored.

That is really cool, Justin. I've never seen or heard about these. I did see a Seeburg jukebox for sale just yesterday somewhere on CL, but it's the usual 45 rpm type.

Justin,

That's great that you picked that up. Those were home library units. They used the same mechanism as their jukeboxes, just backwards. I have been tempted by the 45rpm console library units before.

I would love one of these, but chances of finding one is slim, probably, around these woods. A guy in Houston retores them , staring at $850. Ouch.

Request - do you have a video of this operating or any known links of this very cool "jukebox" in operation? I would really love to hear and see it in operation. Thank you!

The Seeburg 45 and 33 RPM changers were used in radio station program automation equipment-Schaffer comes to mind. The unit would be loaded with records for the stations airplay-and the automation system "brain" or computer would play the records on set times along with RR tape decks and cart machines.Program automation system fell out of favor-they were sort of the rage in the 60's-70's-Easy listening stions used them.Toured one radio station in Wash DC that used an automation system starring the Seeburg changers, and two RCA FM transmitters in one room. When these syustems fell out of favor stations couldn't even give them away. They were so desired-then unwanted!Would like to run into one that has the 33 and 45 RPM Seeburg changers. You would have to figure how to program the changers to play.Remember seeing a demo of the Seeburg home unit at the convention center in Rapid City,S.Dak in the late 60's-Really cool unit. Was during some kind of home show. They also had a "Crystal Carrousel" home organ.A fellow was there playing the organ and demo'ing its features.Liked the Seeburg Hi-Fi,though.

No-can't remember the price, and didn't ask!Was a teenager than! Both the organ demo and Hi-Fi demo were quite interesting. Both were expensive!I recall these things when the item is shown or discussed-Seeburg Hi-Fi rember that from the depths of time! The things you see at home shows!Would make sense to have Hi-Fi gear and musical gear at a home show!Need something for entertainment.Me and a good freind of mine went to that show.He was more interested in the organ-I liked the Seeburg Hi-Fi set.

I don't know of any videos as of yet, but when I get a chance, I will make a video of one of mine and post it.

I see them every now and then. I know there were a couple on Ebay for a while, but they wanted over $1,000 each for them. I paid $200 for my first one about 3-4 years ago. Shortly after that, there was one on Craigslist here for $100. I should have bought it, but didn't. There was another on here, but it was a different cabinet style and it had been painted. I think the guy wanted $500 for it. That was too much. Then I just found the one I posted last week. I'm happy with it.

At an antique store in Long Beach, there was one. It was the design that didn't have the amp with it. It was intended to hook up to an external amp. No speakers either. It was just the center part with the doors/changer unit. They wanted $300 for that one.

I'd call this cabinet "tasteful." It must know all the words since the seller says it doesn't hum. Attractively priced at $165. Just north of San Diego,
