January is over already so time for a new thread.
Lets kick off with a Hoover Spin Dryer, not a spinarinse as it has no pump, gravity drain only. From June 1973 CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay

In better condition than the one from last month. Interesting to see that the second "oven" is in fact a hot cupboard. The old cooker control switch looks interesting too

Want want want - I always liked these cookers from the point of view that the oven was higher than usual (I am tall) and the eye level grill. This has a fan oven too ...... In Worchestershire

This is the earlier version (mid 70s) of the Highline shown above - the Highline and Topline names came from Jackson - when the companies were joined under the same group both brands featured side by side but as time went on the Jackson name was dropped.

The AEG dryer has the big opening, so it is probably second half of the eighties, early nineties. It's a "U" (Unterbau) model, which means that it was meant for placement under a counter. The fascia is different too from the freestanding models. The freestanding equivalent would be the Lavatherm 740 (picture)

And not for silly money either.
This style of cooker switch was used for maybe 40+ years in the UK. This one is post the 1970s style update for the switches. For any US/Canadian readers its not actually unlike a US style outlet in construction. The SS front its essentially just trim and unscrews to leave the switch/socket assembly behind. The cooker/range is isolated by the switch on the left and the socket on the right can be used for kettle etc. The countersunk mounting box is HUGE! In the UK we still use similar switches but they are rather smaller now Al CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay

In Belper, Derbyshire. Sorry the pictures are so small, the ad does not allow for enlargement
The seller is either mad or smoking something for the price they are asking. What's REALLY interesting in this kitchen is the Westinghouse Oven. These were imported from the late 1960s to around the end of the 1970s. Its odd that the hob seems somewhat newer to my eyes. Still, at that price I wont be going for it CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay |

Whilst doing these threads I have posted several Cannon gas cookers which actually show the evolution of this long running model. This looks to be one of the earliest versions. Its not cheap for a cooker getting on for 60 years old

I am not posting this so much that people might be interested in buying it, but it is an example of a long running range of cupboards. As far as I am aware they did go on sale in the late 1950s and were around all through the 1960s and into early 70's.

I agree with you 100% about the Belling Classic 80 which I would find very hard to resist is one came up. I have a brochure at home which I will scan and post if I have time over the weekend. It is another of those UK products of the time which showed a cleanness of line and unadorned styling. Hotpoint washing machines are another example as indeed I would say were the dashboards and interiors of the "Mk II" Triumphs. That said the 1970s version is not too far off, I posted one last month - its reply #32 not quite 2/3 of the way down the thread linked below. I also posted a kitchen for sale in one of the late threads in 2014 which had a Classic 80? Are you not tempted by the Carron Capri in Derby which has just been relisted again? I posted that last month too Al CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK |

This one is round your direction I think.
This Supertwin is quite rare, its a kind of intermediate between the ST3 (the first of this style) and the later 100/108/110/115, still the same general styling as the ST3 but with the later style two stage agitator - one to grab I think. Glad you are enjoying stopping by Phil, this is just a small and somewhat random attempt to match your good work on the other side of the pond.
In reply #56 I referred to a similar although somewhat earlier Creda model, this had (hateful!) solid rings which memory says were arrayed in a straight line along the middle of the range rather than to the front - I guess they thought this would be a better arrangement to give space to draw pans back onto, and possibly less chance of burning yourself while setting the controls Al |

Al - What dismays me is how the panel on that stove (#56 reply) was worn off. Good appliances should not lose their panel finish so easily, unless they're creating paint remover for desserts. The UK appliances are so different, some aren't too unusual, but so many look "quirky" to me. I wonder if that's how some of our appliances appear to you all over there?

Phil
This range would have been TOL for its time (and that brochure is for a slightly earlier model judging by the controls) but I would reckon its getting on for 45 years old. Its seems pretty clean (except for the sides) so it could be that the former owner was just a bit heavy handed with the household cleaner but its just as likely that it was never produced with an expectation of life of 45 years+ ahead of it. Quirky? I should say so, but I think that is a good thing. I always find it interesting to see how the same products develop in different ways in different countries in response to different market demands and housing conditions - for example a portable dishwasher is almost unheard of here (largely because we did not have that most excellent and simple faucet connector) and I have yet to see a dishwasher on sale here with no outside casing (like a US portable would have). And its not just UK/US but also mainland Europe and Australia although as time goes on globalisation is tending to make everything look the same. Al |

Thanks for the remarks, Al. That's interesting..portable dishwashers are rare or non-existent because of the faucet connection? That's one I have to experience to understand, but perhaps it's about space, which is far more frugally managed(if available, at that)in Europe. We live in air plane hangars by contrast, compared to so many around the world. My mom had no room for a dishwasher, but my dad wanted one so much, he was willing to park it near the exit out of the kitchen to the steps, where you'd have to squeeze by...wasn't going to happen. We lived in those frugal spaces....but I'm surprized at the design differences in the examples, some looking like they came from even further back in time. You're right, there's a trend towards less distinction and more generic design. Thanks for posting;gives people like me a view we might not discover otherwise.

This is the first of the UK designed and built Moffat cookers, previously they were of Canadian design and (I think) manufacture. If it is in line with later models its about 60cm wide.
The time frame on this is very tight - I would love to buy it myself, but just don't have the time to deal with it at the moment. Its in London CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay |

Well maybe it was a bit of an exaggeration to imply that it was entirely due to the faucet connection but we did not have (and still don't) anything like it. I appreciate that our DW market lagged that in the US but I am just staggered by the amount of portable dishwashers must have been sold in US/Canada. Yes, you probably had more internal space to roll them around but even so .....

I understand the problem with the Belling and of course even if it does not sell for much then there is the cost of going to collect it and even more so the valuable time it takes up. I well remember when I went to collect the Keymatics from Gary how long the journey took on the A303, although it was worth it. What about that nice Moffat in North Wales - that can't be so far from you :) Al |

This will be from the mid 1970s - I remember them being on sale. It is strange that EB had an oven, hob, hood and this - no other appliances that I can recall. The oven hob and hood make sense to be built into the Eastham kitchens they were sold with but never understood why they had this. It can be wall mounted

Hi guys I called in to charity warehouse where Phillips dryer was today but it had gone. I think I need a dryer as my Bendix won't dry properly anymore and I'm stumped as to why not. I thought I'd clean the Phillips up and use it for a while and move it on here to someone who perhaps has the matching washer. But sadly it's gone. None of the other appliances have moved so either just a regular punter or someone from here saw my post ! Hopefully so. We can see it cleaned up !

Look any more 1970s. Seems to be a lot of interest in this one. Looks in good condition. That style of oven (freestanding but built in under a hob installed in the work top) never caught on here although popular in mainland Europe. To the right of the hob I see a Corning Counter Saver. The fridge is interesting too, again a style popular on mainland Europe yet our manufacturers resolutely avoided it. The front door has a frame which allows a matching panel to make it "disappear" into the kitchen, I generally thought they worked quite well, certainly does here.

That yellow kitchen is wonderful! Very stylish, I love the tiles too. The Neff appliances were expensive back then (70's). The fridge is a bit small, often the choice was a 250 liters model. I can't really determine it, but I guess the oven is still gas? Soon after the built under cookers the built in became in fashion. Around that time the combination of gas hob and electric oven appeared on the market, which was soon the most popular combination soon in continental Europe.
BTW, this kitchen looks very well kept! |

I quite like that kitchen too although personally I would have preferred the cupboards to have squared off rather than round edges. I LOVE the tiles too though, 1970s style but much more restrained than many of that period. I wonder if they had a dishwasher or washing machine? Imagine if there was a Neff of similar era in there. You know I had quite forgotten that Neff supplied gas ovens (do they supply them still?) - I had assumed that it was electric but of course it could be gas. That kitchen must have been someone's pride and joy as it has been kept so well although of course it would have cost a fortune when new Al |

That food mixer was made by Electrostar. Most of them were sold under the Starmix label. I have an older Starmix just like the Hoover in the picture. It's incomplete though, the doughhook is missing and the blender is missing too. Actually the blender was the basis, the food mixer an extra. The food mixer also came with shredding and slicing discs.
Here is a later Starmix MX4 with attachments and a picture of the front page of a manual. Starmix also sold a coffeemill, an icemaker, a juice extractor and some more attachments for it. I don't know if the Hoover sold those too. Electrostar GmbH is based in Reichenbach, Germany (near Stuttgart). |

This was sold here primarily as a food mixer but also came with blender, mincer, coffee mill and the slicer/shredder which by the look of it was an adaptation of the food mixer bowl. I have an Automix myself and its not bad although everything needs to be started at slow speed - even egg whites which need this to gain some volume before speeding up. The biggest disadvantage to my mind is that it is such a pain to remove the mix (especially creamed mixtures) from the beaters. Much easier on a Kenwood or Sunbeam. Al |

Hotpoint wringer washer, appears to be in almost printine condition. Tiny amount of paint loss on the bottom lip of the wringer, but still, not bad at all considering the state you see some of these in. No idea whether or not this is a good price, but I've seen people asking the same or more for machines in far worse condition.
