1993ish. This is the set we were looking at before we bought our Whirlpool electonic set. And we bought those in Feb of 93'. As far as features went, the WP and the SQ were pretty much on the same level. Both had the same functions as the other.

It really came down to who could get us the machine faster, the WP or the SQ dealer. But from what I have been told here before, I was lucky that I went with the WP as the SQ's chewed up belts and had seal leaks frequently.

well the CL post has been deleted so perhaps someone got them all ready. But i wonder what the reddish liquid was in the bottom on the washer in pic #5.  And why would SQ go thru the trouble of making everything electronic but the water level control? Seems kind of odd.

Mechanical WL Control on an Electronic Washer

Not odd at all if you understood how things worked, WP-KM did the same thing on their first two electronically controlled washers.

Hi Allen, you diffidently got the better washer and dryer.

Thanks, and the set has been running for 22 years now with no major repairs!

Hello, Allen -

I'd be interested in seeing what Whirlpool set gave you 22 long years of service and still going strong.
If you have a link to a set or a pic of your own, thank you. I haven't turned up anything in searching..yet.

Phil

If You Want To See More

of the set, follow the link. I'm wondering just how long this set will last. 40 years maybe?

Allen - thanks for the link. I envy the wash/dry choices. I've seen this set somewhere in another color, I believe, just once..not sure if it was the set or just the washer or later, the dryer. Seems a shame they're in a closet, but we've had changes, too. The former laundry room had windows; the present arrangement is one light, no windows, and a door and no way to appreciate the W & D as before. I love these electronic panels - you have parts, I take it?

Eighteen more years to go!

Parts

Yes, I have a spare transmission, motor, drive coupler, pump, inlet valves, spin clutch, and believe it or not the tub is still available even though I don't have an extra.

I don't have any extra electric control panels or their circuit boards. But the buttons aren't really showing any wear yet and the machines are in an controlled environment (heated/air conditioned) so I'm hoping those will last.

Consumer Reports reviewed this machine, I believe it was in the June 92' issue, and we got them in Feb of 1993. CR gave it a high rating. Because of this you would think that there are a lot of this model machine out there. There isn't. They were special order only and I have only seen a 1 other washer like it in a CL ad the whole time we've had ours. A member or two have seen one of these before. I would gather that there were probably less than 1,000 of these machines made. The question is why would CR bother to review a machine that has such low production numbers?

Except for the electronic control panel, this is just an ordinary WP TL DD machine. We've been very happy with it's performance over the years.

The reason they now live in a closet is that we downsized our home severely in 2001. We moved from a 3600 sq ft house to one that's 1500 sq ft. We did this because we wanted a cheap to run/own house when I retired, and so far it's been just that. But I think we downsized too much. There is not a lot of spare space in this house. Most houses here this size usually have the washer/dryer in the garage.
And I think the humidity would ruin the control panel on this set. So an indoor laundry room was a requirement for our new house.

Allen -

We have an old Whirlpool at our Michigan house - thing just goes and goes. I hope your set lasts another 22, but something will no doubt need replacing or repaired…you have covered a lot of the bases. If you get another 5 to 10 years out of it and the electronics continue…well, hope they just keep going.

(we did the same as you, little larger space, down to 1244 ft2. We're still selling stuff or giving it away.)
