Well, the time has come. I am officially looking for a KDS-58 Superba dishwasher. So far, no leads in my area, would love to purchase one in the mythical "hardly used condition" in white, at a reasonable price.

Louie, I can't believe it's taken you this long to finally get around to wanting a dishwasher.

Oh Bob, no. Been wanting one for years. Just never got around to it. Also, the cabinets where I am never had a dishwasher. So it would have to be a portable. It will slot in where the Maytag currently is. It's going to be "semi-permanent", piped in like a regular dishwasher, but still plugged and on wheels.

Louie - then there's the Caloric stove project, unless you're done with it

I'm trying my hardest to not buy a new one either. I'd prefer an excellent vintage dishwasher to hit my neighborhood

Phil, the Caloric is a GO. I was a bit too busy these past few weeks, but I'll get back to it by the first week of March. The hood is almost done, just need to paint some lettering.

The Maytag is going to be moved to a new laundry closet, next to the kitchen. That's the next project after the Caloric install.

just an idea.....you may not find the exact model of a portable you want....but if you do find a decent portable, wouldn't it make sense to grab it, and then, eventually find an undercounter, or similar model, and switch it to the portable cabinet....

for the most part, it may be as easy as just switching the front panel...

just a thought

Good idea Martin! I wish I had kept my 80s era one for that purpose.

Also, I prefer Little Eva's version. ;)

No Bob, just images of what I'm looking for.

I don't want to settle for another model, simply because of space limitations.

Thanks Will!

I loved, loved, loved Little Eva's version when it was first released in 1962 and I still do today.

Got a question for all you vintage dishwasher experts out there. Since I live in a COOP, I have no control over the hot water temperature in my apartment. It sometimes varies from lava to fairly hot. Does the KDS-58 have an preheater?

Thanks in advance.

18 series preheater

appnut's profile picture

No.  The 18 series was the last that didn't.  The 19 series was the first--Energy Saver IV.  Offers only no heat dry.  The 20 series heated the water and offered heat or cool dry.  I have been wondering abut this issue for you.

And fortunately/unfortunately, I think I've seen 60 series portables in here recently.  Was thee such a thing as a KD61 or KD62?

Hmmm, I suppose so. I'm no expert.

Hopefully I'll have better luck finding a 60.

KDS 18 Series Hot Water

chachp's profile picture

So, does the KDS-18 use an element to just maintain the water like the previous Superba models or does it not heat the water at all?  I have been thinking about finding an 18 for myself to play with but that would be a bit of a deal breaker for me.  I can't see myself having a daily driver that doesn't heat the water.  I'm OK with a machine that maintains the temps but not one that doesn't heat the water at all.

I keep hearing all these great things about the 18 series.  I guess I just assumed it worked the same way as the 20 where certain wash sequences stop to heat the water to 140.  I keep the water in my house at around 140 so usually the dishwasher sits to heat the water for the PreWash but most after that just click a time or two to check the temperature and then move on.

My other half takes about a hundred showers a day (well maybe I exaggerate a little) and I want to know that if the water heater hasn't caught up to him yet the dishwasher will.

The 18 series is like the previous ones, just maintains temperature.  The Energy Saver IV (19) series was their first attempt at a dishwasher which heated its own water.  Now the 18 Superba, had the longest Soak & Scrub of any KDS and it had the heater heat the water while it was pausing during the S&S, but not thermostatically held.

That was one of the reasons I favored the 18, but like I said, temps here are unpredictable, so a 20/60 is my best bet.

Since I am no longer looking for an 18/58, my search for a 20/60 continues here:

Thanks to Phil, I'm picking up a KDS-58 tomorrow. Why? I have a KDS-19, but a KDS-58 was my first choice, but the non-heating was a deal breaker. But it's FREE so, what the hell.

It heats... Some of the portion of the cycles... But however you get the triple Hurricane, Tornado and Typhoon all in one box.

It will take the pattern off your dishes.

Is the Special Use for crystal and silverware? Ok, jokes are accepted...I know there was a Party Mode on some Kitchenaids. "Not Party mode, Phil." But wondering if Special Use is similar. I'm dying here..Party? I think that's it.
