Hey guys - I have a friend that called me and said his mother is selling her house in Brooklyn New York. He told me in the garage their is a very old washer that is labeled ABC O Matic. He didnt give me a price but I think it will go for not much. It doesnt have a window but that could be fixed. He explained the controls are on the front top side. He explained it has a little rust but not much. Anyone interested please contact me by email (Peteski50@Aol.Com)
Thanks
Peter

HI everyone. I live 35 miles from where the ABC factory was, which was in East Peoria,Illinois. I sure wish this machine was closer than New York. I have 2 ABC wringers and use them all the time. Darn, wish I was closer. Gary

Do ABC wringers use Centric Agitation?

Just sent an email I'm only a few miles from there, being a Staten Islander. Lets see what happens.

Hi everyone, Jaxsunst, If you mean does the ABC wringer use a center post agitator? The Answer is yes. The 1958 model that I have has a turquoise colored agitator. This machine was made by American Motors with the ABC name on it. The 1955 model with a black agitator was still made by the ABC company of East Peoria, Il. The company changed hands around the middle or so part of the 50's.

To clear it up though....

The ABC wringers do NOT use x-centric action. Mark

From PeterH's link, the next picture forward, shows the agitator, which has wings that look like actual wings. If that agitator had a normal arc to it, and operated at anything like a normal speed, it must have been *very* vigorous. Presumably it was designed to operate more slowly and on a shorter arc?

Anyway, if you can save that unit in NY, by all means do.

Actually

It does not rotate back and forth like an ordinary agitator so check out the link to the videos.

Mark, What then is X-centric agitation? Inquiring minds like mine want to know. Gary

Oh cool, I just watched the video. I would love to have one of these machines. Fern and Lester(what a couple that was)! lol down the street had one. He was the ABC dealer in town until they went out of business. It sat there for years and didn't work. They are both gone now and I am sure it was thrown out when the house was sold. I wish I would have gotten it. Gary

I've put in a call and some emails, but I keep missing Petes call backs. Going to try again tonight. Thanks for bearing with me... if whats here is anything like the machine in the museum, it would be a really amazing first-antique-washing-machine experience for me. :-)

Jam

The question was about the agitation in the wringer washer. The wringer washer's agitator oscillated back and forth. The Kelvinator/ABC automatics had the x-centric action as seen in the video that Glenn posted. Mark

I am bound(oops, another story) lol and determined to get an ABC-O-Matic washer. I had a friend put an ad in the Bloomington Pantagraph to see if anyone who reads the paper would know of one. That part of the paper lets people put in "wanted" ads for free. I hope I hear back. I'll keep eveyone informed. Bye for now. Gary

hi folks!

Apparently, this in indeed a Model 50, without a window. I'm going to try to check it out this week. Was the window an option?

Yes, ABC made two models, the 50 and the 50G which had the glass window. Here is my 50G...

Robert's 50G is a FUN machine!!! It is so quiet and it has the amber light at the bottom panel that lights up when the machine is in action. I love how gentle it is and everything is "shampooed" in a nice thick layer of suds; especially when classic Cheer is used. :-)

The window makes it that much more fun to use. It's very splashy and soapy!!

Yes the window in the ABC makes a nice warning, otherwise the unsuspecting housewife might get a face full of suds if she doesn't understand that her new washer has a "slight" tendency to splash !

And.. if our poor dear unsuspecting housewife just came home from the beauty parlor, her new hair do would be RUINED!

A slight tendency to splash? Holy smokes ... :-)
