Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted here. At the weekend I discovered a Hotpoint 15790 for sale locally. Obviously, I just had to get it as even 9605s are hard to come by here and I thought I'd never see a 15-series - ever. So I picked it up on Saturday and paid no more than £20 for it.

Condition-wise, it's good for its age. It was built in July 1983, making it nearly 32 years old. It's a bonus to have the Union Jack sticker fully intact and preserved too as these were often peeled off as soon as a machine was purchased due to the political issues that were going on here. In fewer words - I am over the moon with it!

Upon taking the board off it was evident that it's had the usual leaks over the year. I wasn't suprised to discover that it leaks water from the shaft area. Other than that issue, it is electrically and mechanically sound but requires cleaning up.

So yesterday I started to strip down the machine. Needless to say I didn't get very far. I got the special nut removed but I need a bearing puller the get the tripod off. All six tub bolts snapped too which doesn't do me any favours. My biggest worry is funding for the spare parts but I'll come to that when I get that far - if I get that far.

Any advice is welcome, I'll working on it again tomorrow. It would give me great joy to be able to use it.

Regards, James.

Hey James

Congratulations! Last year I got a 96700 made in 1984! I love it! Is this your first experience with one of these? It sounds like you certainly know what you're doing. If you have any questions, I probably wouldn't know the answer, but the other forum members are so knowledgeable. Thanks to Sesteve, I was able to disable the agitate-while-filling on my particular machine. I am sure you are going to have a lot of fun with it!

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have a 9605 but it is leaking oil from the gearbox as well as water so that is being stripped down to supply me with parts if anything is salvageable. I am getting another 9605 to replace it. Obviously this machine takes priority as it is older and I prefer the 15-series to the 96-series. This is the first time I have seen one of these in person let alone strip one down. It will be a challenge but hopefully a worthy challenge. Like I said before, I would be thrilled to have it in full working order to use every now and again.

James.

I used to have the same machine many moons ago. I loved it. Would really like to get another but I'm on a dreaded water meter and I'm already using the same amount of water that a two person house hold uses. Good luck with the machine and look forward to see its progress

Hi James

I found the photos from when I carried out the seal repair on the 9605 - I should have taken more but I did this in the small shed in the old house. I got the bowl out but could not get the bowl support to shift so I took off the outer tub which gave me better access - might be worth you doing the same if you can.

I've noticed that the drain hose on your machine looks like the arrangement on the 1509/10 as my 15792 has a plastic hose connected directly to the pump.

Good luck with the repair - take plenty of photos if you can.

Cheers
S

Hello James yet again you have turned up a great machine (my favourite Hotpoint)..........you will have to have your best thinking cap on to sort out the few problems with this one, if you have snapped the bolts and do get them out replace them with Stainless Steel ones. Once you get to them the seals are easy to do.
Once working these are great washers, if you have cold fill only your load will get a long soak before it reaches temperature and then get washed.

But enjoy it and well done

Gary

Thanks for the photos Stephen, your 15792 looked lovely. If your machine was built after July 1983 it could be possible that it was built with the plastic drain hose originally or it could be possible that the original rubber drain hose had perished (like many do) and it was replaced with a plastic drain hose. I was relieved to find that the rubber hoses on mine were very supple.

Gary thank you for your kind words, it's been a while since we last spoke. A few years ago I could only dream of finding machines like this, it's good to have the evidence that I'm finally looking in the right places and that it's paying off! I am struggling to get the drum separated from it's support but I will get there eventually. This is the first time I've attempted to strip down a top loader after all. Once stripped down I will be changing the bearing and giving everything a good clean whilst most importantly making the machine watertight. I anticipate that Halfords will have the correct shade of paint to sort out the lid and console sides/top. The wash guide inside the lid as more or less washed off unfortunately and the handle has cracked. I could always glue the handle but it would be nice to have a replacement handle and lid underside.

Hopefully I'll have something to report on tomorrow.

James.

It's giving me a hard time that's for sure!

Hi all,

Just a small update. I got a bearing puller tonight and because the tripod was badly corroded it wasn't long until all three legs broke off. So, that's it I can't get the tripod off and as a last resort I must saw it off. It hasn't beaten me yet though! Luckily I have a 9605 with a gearbox that leaks oil to use for parts and since the tripod came off it without any fuss I will most likely be using the 9605's shaft and upper gearbox and transfer the 15790's lower gearbox. I may also have to use the 9605's inner drum too as the 15790's won't budge for me. The enamel is darker on the later machine but it's a small price to pay for a functional machine. I was also told by an engineer who has been in the trade for four decades that the colour/shade of the enamel varied during the production of each batch so that gives me some relief.

I might have something to report back in tomorrow - fingers crossed!

James.

hi James.

I sympathise with you. They are such a sod to get off. I struggled to get my 3 legged puller to secure onto the tripod but I fixed it on between the drive nut arms and it eventually managed to shift with the blow torch and increasing pressure on the puller. Trouble was I didn't have a nut to protect the top of the drive shaft so was using washers balanced on it and the puller kept falling off. Still perseverance paid off in the end.- I've attached a link to the type I used - is yours the same?

I didn't do anything to the gearbox so would be great to see some pics on how you get on.

Keep up the good work
S :)

Good news at last!

This afternoon my uncle got the angle grinder and took the remains of the tripod off and with loads of heat and persistence the bowl came out. It's beyond saving so I'm just going to use the 9605's bowl, bowl support, tripod and special nut. I need to buy a new cork washer for under the nut and I also found the cause of the water leak - the support tube. It has some corrosion, the two of them do but they should clean up okay and the best example will be used in the overhauled machine. The seals are in good condition much to my surprise so it looks like this will be a low cost restoration.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to remove the support tube and the gearbox to sort it out. May not be long now until I'm in a position to start rebuilding, I'm so happy I've got through the toughest part!

James.
