How important are the wings on this thing. One broke off. This is the plastic baffle that fits into the tub grommet.

Outer Tub Drain Baffle

It is not very important, however the part that broke off is the most important end of it. I have several new ones if you want to purchase one, Email me.

I'm getting ready to put the machine back together in the next day or two. What exactly do these "wings" do?

Thanks for the memories!

We had a late 50's early 60's vintage Whirlpool washer that started making an horrendous noise one day and my Dad called for service and the serviceman knew exactly what was making the noise!
It was the same white baffle you show in the picture except it did not break off completely but was dragging along the bottom of the inner tub.He said it served to direct the water directly into the drain hose. He pounded away at the spanner nut and made taking the tub out look easy. He cut it away with a razor knofe and we never had a problem with the machine again. It lasted well into the 70's and then finally broke down and my parents bought a newer Heavy capacity WP which barely lasted 10 years! But they still bought another one and it was left at the house when they sold it in 1996.
