Whirlpool marketing against Speed Queen?

Lots of retailers offer a 5-year warranty, and at least here in Germany, pretty much any retailer will let you call (or call for you) the manufacturers repair service. So this is barley considerable marketing against SQ, especially given how many people who are not in the market know about the ne SQs at all.

I highly doubt it

Rent-a-Center's target demographic couldn't tell a Speed Queen from a Whirlpool or any other make, nor would they be aware of the difference among manufacturer guarantees.

But...

There are no manufacturers that offer a 5 year warranty in the USA other than SQ.

But a lot of retailers do, and as I said, a lot of retailers outsorce their extended warranty repairs back to the manufactureres repair service.

Well...

Since it is a Speed Queen machine in the background, I surmised it was a jab at their warranty (not an extended warranty)

Ya know the neat thing is

You don't really need to call SQ for warranty service!

Now with the techo laden piles of junk out there today, perhaps a user would be on a first name basis with their repair hotline!

Why are warranties so short in the US? Two years are standard in Germany for practically every electronic device with many manufacturers throwing in extra years for free (up to ten, in the case of a certain brand).

Good Question.

I suppose it is because most of the machines we have over here aren't built all that well.

Simple answer = GREED.

With a shorter warranty period "they" make more $$ for service, parts or replacement of the item all together.

Besides, absolutely no one except "us on AW" would know that's an SQ washer in the background.

More money for service

Yeah - I hadn't even thought of that. Makes sense, though. :-/

I'm not convinced that the manufacturers greed level really dictates the move to shorter warranties. My guess is that it would be something that is considered "expendable" in order to try to keep the ultimate purchase price down to the consumers.

Of course this is pushed largely by the fact that a pretty big percentage of consumers have been buying the extended warranties for years now. Its easy for the manufacturer to just surmise that if the consumer wants to buy a warranty, they might as well just let someone else sell it. I have never, and will never buy an extended warranty on anything I ever buy. Only thing it gives is peace of mind at a cost. If they didn't make out well on them they wouldn't sell them so aggressively...

To a large degree I look at the warranty as being just part of marketing, a longer warranty don't make something automatically better, but it may be offered to give that appearance. Craftsman tools today are a good example, sure they will give you a free one forever, but I buy tools that don't need to be replaced. Of course for many of us here in the appliance "know" a warranty is worthless since we do our own repair work anyhow.
