So some of you have been following our Speed Queen saga in another post, but that's a horse if a different color... We recently purchased the Kenmore 29132 HE Top Load Washer and matching gas dryer to replace the SQs.

Our criteria was

1. Decent capacity.
2. Excellent cleaning ability.
3. Ability to handle dog hair.
4. At least one short cycle.

I originally wanted the Kenmore Elite Front loaders with the over 5 cu ft capacity but they would not fit in our laundry room upstairs. We will have a set of Maytag Maxima front loaders in the basement to handle secondary loads. We looked at the Cabrio 8500, the machine this is based on, but the Kenmore was $300 cheaper and had the spray technology in the impeller. As the wash cycle begins there is a fan spray that recirculates the detergent water and there are nine spray holes in the impeller to saturate underneath. It seems to be a great feature with one caveat which I will mention in the end. We got the standard Sears one year warranty and added a 4 year Square Trade warranty to it for less than $200 for the pair.

We have run 5 loads in 24 hours and so far I am fairly impressed. They are quieter than our previous Bravos XL top load set and in fact, you cannot even here the spin cycle it is near silent. Vibration is no issue at all as our floors are completely level. I washed some whites, colors, two dog beds, darks, and towels with prints. Everything came out fresh, clean, and it did in the stains on the white tee's. Quick cycle took 33 minutes with FB added. The Deep Fill option fully submerged the dog beds and the bedding cycle easily handled the towels. Lots if blooming, lots of movement. Some twisting I'd the clothes after the spin as expected. The sprays are fun to watch.

Speaking of the sprays I have learned that Persil Pro Clean is unfortunately seemingly incompatible with this machine and possibly the whole new generation of Whirlpool top loaders in this style. Due to the recirculating sprays, 1-1.5oz of either liquid or perls locks the machine up tight with a suds error. We have super soft water and I never had sudding issues in the Maxima's but it seems the sprays turn Persil into pure foam. I called Henkel this morning and they are putting in a manufacturing report based on my bottle numbers and said they will investgate. They are sending me a check for the cost of the 3 bottles which I told then was unnecessary as the bottles would get donated to a dog shelter or needy family. Anyway, in each case, I had to rinse and spin and start the laid over. I had no problems with Cheer HE powder, Tide BA Turbo, Tide Turbo pods, or Oxiclean Detergent Powder. Yes I ran the gauntlet in using different detergents for different loafs. Lol.

I will add more info as I continue to use them and investigate this new style. So far, so good.

I was just looking at this exact model/color. I'm looking at going HE and have been doing research. I currently have a GE set, which is still fairly new and fine, but wanting to upgrade. I really like the looks of this one and the Whirlpool version has great ratings. I'm only replacing the washer right now and I like that it's a new model so in a year or so I can still get a matching dryer.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing updates!

I like that the glass lid is clear. Is the control panel membrane switches or the touch sensitive glass like the Whirlpool?

I was just thinking about your dosing amount with the Persil, I would reduce it some if your water is really soft. There is a tipping point I find with the stuff, if one adds a touch more of the stuff it will suds up. I find with my LG washer that line one is plenty for most loads and my water is medium hardness. I wouldn't give up on the stuff just yet.

Malcolm.

It is the glass touch sensitive panel. It is highly responsive and even responds with a "doink" if you try to select an option that isn't usable with your cycle. The Kenmore machine seems to be a direct clone of the new Maytag Bravos XL MVWB855. The only differences seem to be that they offer different cycles. I did notice on hot and sanitize you must wipe the condensation from the panel since the steam rises up and onto the panel since it is slanted.

Per the Persil Pro Clean, the recommended dose is 1.5oz for a regular load. I did a large load of towels, about 12, and added 1oz of Pro Clean Perl's and there was nearly 10 inches of sudsy foam on the top of the towels when the suds lock kicked in. Thinking it was a fluke, I rinsed and drained the load with a cap of FS. I then ran the load sans detergent. The second attempt with Pro Clean Original liquid did the same thing with 1oz and a load of mixed whites. I tried again today using the liquid and a small load of washcloths and bath mats and the same result.

The person I spoke to at Henkel this morning, put me on hold for a few minutes and then seemed to have an idea as to what I was describing as he almost immediately then asked if the washer had a recirculating spray...

I know with my LG frontloader that the TurboWash will kick up some suds and then the spray kinda peters out some. It does the same with Tide Turbo Powder too I find. But like I said you may need less than what your dosing since your water is already soft.
Nice machines by the way. I too kicked my SQ washer to the curb after 6 years.

Those are gorgeous machines. I really like the new styling of this design, aside from the change in light color on the Maytags (I love the amber colored lights on everything before they switched to white). I was literally a breath away from going with the new Cabrio design, because the Maytag version had just launched the day before I made the decision on the replacement machine. That capacitive touch panel gives me the vapors. *fans self*

I do feel that while I'm not crazy about the addition of a "gearbox" to the BPM motor drive, it does alleviate the issues that can come about with the floating basket system, and paired with the tamed spin speeds in these new machines, they should be pretty durable.

I'm glad to hear that it is quiet and has performed well so far.

You'll find with these machines that you'll take forever to get through a bottle or box of detergent. I've learned that a typical load of laundry needs about 1/3 of what I would put in a traditional TL, and 1/2 of what the detergent packaging instructs. Just experiment until you find that happy medium, and you'll have beautiful, fresh smelling laundry, with just a touch of suds to know that there is indeed something in the water, with no issues with rinsing at all. Fabric softener is in that same guideline. I don't use much FS at all to begin with, but a full load only gets enough softener to coat the bottom of the measuring cap. The clothes will have just a hint of the scent, there will be no slimy residue on them OR your machine, and you shouldn't have a need for dryer sheets at all.

On a related note of general advice if you don't mind (this is for anyone), I found during the winter months that when I did in fact need a little static management, cutting dryer sheets into 1/3s was perfect. No stickiness to coat the filter or moisture sensors, and no overwhelming fragrance! Just clean, soft, static free laundry. I don't know why they can't come in that size when you buy them!!

The Kenmore branded Whirlpool machines have a few extra features that the whirlpool,s don't get, other than the glass top and different agitator plate I cannot see other improvements. What am I missing?

By any chance is there an LED tub light?

Thanks For The Compliments

We went on a search for the new Maytag Bravos 855 but it was nowwhere to be found. Lowes, Home Depot, no one had it. Special orders were quoting June 1 for a delivery. The 8500 was in stock but I just didn't care for the short back and the Kenmore had the spray impeller as I mentioned above. I wasn't sure if Sears would even have the TOL Kenmore but when we popped in the guys were unboxing the floor model as we walked in. They had it in the galaxy gray or whatever they are calling their gray color but as our laundry room is an entrance to the house, I was afraid of big noticeable scratches on the gray. They were just stunning in the showroom and once i saw the demo video they had set up with the "upgrades" from the Whirlpool, I was sold. Not to mention the price. Sears Days were this past weekend and we got this pair for a fraction of what we paid for the SQs.

I'm going to keep the bottles of Persil around and see if I can figure out a solution to using them. I used German Persil in my Bosch set and my Maximas and started using Pro Clean last month when it launched. It is an amazing product so I would like to find a "happy medium." We are going to give the $30 that Henkel is sending us to one of our dog rescue partners to go buy supplies for their mob. lol. If nothing else that is where the Persil will go too, no waste around here for sure when it comes to cleaning products. I didn't notice any suds per se in the HE Turbo pod load I did or the HE Turbo powder load I did, certainly not the mounds I get with the Perls and the liquid.

I was not aware of the mechanical changes you mentioned murando, I'll have to read into this. The dog beds didn't throw this unit into tantrums like our previous Bravos XL we had a few years back so that's a good sign. I kind of wanted to test it a little with the two biggest beds to see if they would get off kilter at all. We gave up our Bravos XL set we had to my parents 3 or so years ago as we could only wash one dog bed at a time otherwise, we had to go out in the street and bring the washer back in from the road from all the walking and vibration. ;)

By the way, for static, see the lavender bottle on the dryer top... Method dryer activated softener spray... We cannot live without it. I hate dryer sheets with a passion and I cannot stand the residue they leave in the lint trap etc. The Method dryer spray is lightly scented, kills static, and imparts just a hair of softness to your clothes. We use it all winter long here in dry tundra Indiana.

Differences

Malcolm,

I have been assessing this all weekend. It looks to me that the 29132 has the SteamTreat(may just be the same cycle renamed), Deep Fill(on all cycles as opposed to a specific cycle), and possibly some different spray technology from the Maytag, certainly different than the Whirlpool. All of the literature on the Maytag is pretty vague and the manual was pretty barren. There is no tub light, that is exclusive to the 8500 Whirlpool. The Kenmore's literature talks a lot about exclusive wash motions and actions just like with the LGMore front loaders so it seems much of it may be in aesthetics and semantics.

They must have made a lot of improvements over the past few years with HE TL washers.....When they first came out around the time FL washers started becoming popular, people HATED them....Now, they have deep fills and sprays and everything..I think the earlier models would not do a deep fill at all, but I could be wrong.

Depending on the cycle, the early Cabrios also did deep fills.

Hi criswan, thanks for the pics...can you post the full model number of the Kenmore 29132, it's hard to find their complete model numbers...have you post any videos of washer?

Your washer is one of the machines I'm researching for a new...I've found the full model number so now all I need is to see the Triple-Action Impeller in action.

We bought that dryer to go with our last years 28102 washer

Yep, the older matching dryer for the 28102 is just about gone so we bought the 68132 non steam white version to pair with it earlier this year when my tax refund got here. Dryer is quiet and seems to save time and money with the auto dry eco modes, plus it's HUGE.
Its 2 inches deeper then our washer but at least it's the same width or it wouldn't have fit in the luandry nook by our kitchen door.
We've never had completely matched sets before so why start now anyways.
Looks like a nice upgrade to our machine as far as the washer goes and I sure like the capacative touch controls and nice melody start and stop signal vs the beeper ours has.
MAYBE if it's a whole lot better then the 102 is we'll upgrade in a year or so at the Outlet store where their demos and refurbs go for a much reduced price like we did for the two we have now saving us some seriuos money and still getting a full warranty.
