Man, i wish they still built these type of front loaders with the control on the top. They looked so cool. I wish they brought them back.

I lusted after these for like 30 seconds--no window.  A front loader without a window is useless.

Our condo building in Brooklyn put the coin op version of those in in 1998. Everyone was very excited about them and I thought they were pretty cool at the time. Unfortunately, with in a year, they were always broken for some reason or another. People just refused to use HE detergents and I think that was part of the reason. We moved out in 99 and of the 8 that were installed, I think only 4 were working, don't know if they repaired or replaced them.

I had this video - on VHS - ordered it directly from Maytag after they introduced them in stores. I also had another sneak preview video from Maytag that came out a few months before the machines were actually available.

I drooled over them at Circuit City and our NE Furniture Mart as well, Brent. There were no deals to be had either, every dealer sold them for $999 no less, no discounts.

when I heard Maytag was planning a front loader soon.  A few months later and there it was....but my Asko is still going strong at 18 years of almost daily use!  But I'd still like a Neptune too.  I wish I had the room some of y'all have to install multiple machines I've always wanted.  My next house......

That's what I said too Bob: "No window, no sale." So I bought an Electrolux badged Frigidaire via White. Hundred $ cheaper, no smells, no underdesigned board/waxmotor. Could buy the same thing badged GE and one other brand, forgot which.

Worst thing it did was skip an occasional spin when it couldn't balance in the (clockwork) allotted time. Good rinser, 1 spray and 4 fills.

Man how I wish we had marketing like this nowadays. Back then companies sought to empower the consumer with interactive videos and in-store demonstrations, and they didn't sugar-coat features and qualities of the machine, and they didn't have to. Now it's all about what the manufacturer can hide from the user by saturating their marketing with flashy gimmicks and promises that they can't keep. They no longer care to educate customers because they WANT the machine to be misused so that it will have to be replaced. The machines are only intended to last 3 or so years anyway.

Marketing new lines

I remember the excitement at my local appliance store for the Neptune demo. The store had set up seating for about 50 people and they probably had 150 more people standing and watching the demo. Those presenters really knew what they were doing, they got the group going. I have not seen a roadshow like that in many years.

Given how infrequently Speed Queen comes out with new appliances (and I think they have been under some kind of legal constraints against advertising) I did kind of expect something along those lines when their new machines came out...

Same Thing Here

Gotta have a window to see if the rinse cycle has no soap suds left in it. Without a window, you can't do that.

Aren't these the Neptunes that were prone to mold up and smell like a sewer?

Yes, they were doomed much like the Calypso. I guess many people didn't know how to use them... much like the Calypso. Maytag revised the design and software several times but I suppose it was too late eventually.

Mold?.....what MOLD?.....I always chalk that up to user error.....

outside of the wax motor issues, these are great running machines, as far as FLers, at least these use plenty of water.....

yeah, we always opt for a window.....first of all, theres an oversuds sensor, that would add rinses to clear that up.......but on any given day, and proven at so many wash-in's, even deliberately over dosing on detergent, they had no problems getting rid of the excess suds, and the final rinse was always clear, window or not!......for years I never used a HE detergent, and never an issue....
