So, how can this happen?

Woah..

Now that would cause an explosion with a heavy load! All that tangling too! I am sure that I will never own one of these machines.

Wonder

If that was the case of all the exploding LGs.
Does it really keep spinning after being powered off? I couldn't hear any difference in the sound.
Hunting for a washer in a month or two, a Neptune or an older Duet is a way to go then.

If this were a Speed Queen they would just tell you "it'll work itself out." Lol. I would be curious to see the outcome from this mishap. Seems to me that with all the plastic gears etc. in direct drive machines this could happen in almost any modern machine.

~Normal

This is the Bulky Bedding Cycle.

The bottom wash plate stops thus causing the comforter to stop at the bottom of the washer.  Then the tub continues to spin thus causing the comforter to spin from the bottom up.  This is a wringing action.  It is very effective.

LOL!

I think, looking at the control panel, it was the Rinse & Spin.

Wouldn't such an idea cause a massive out-of-balance?

I still am not entirely familiar with how LGs top-loaders work as far as switching from agitate to spin. I believe the new Whirlpool Cabrio machines now have a similar system, somehow locking the tub and agitator together without an actual mode switcher like the VMW, or a floating basket like the previous Oasis/F&P machines. From a few videos you can hear a faint electrical humming sound whenever they start to turn the basket, so I assume it's some kind of electromagnet doohicky. I wonder if that's what suddenly failed or misbehaved???

But I'm also confused... aren't the LG top-loaders Direct Drives?? If that's the case, how did the basket continue to spin while the wash plate stayed perfectly still? I'd think that the rotor was stopped dead and that the basket was just coasting down slowly, but it seemed to continue spinning at the same rate...

Things that make your head itch....

I think the LGs work similar to Samsung's washers.

Interesting---that DD washer motor makes me think of the DD motor in a Technics TT!!And if soda is spilled in the Technics motor and board--the TT oscillates just as in a washer!

Tub break gear

So it looks like the upper part of the gear that locks the drum in place has been steered off. YAY for plastic!

Plastic gears?

gpevas's profile picture
Does anyone know why plastic gears are used? I can't understand why plastic is used in gears?

Here's a good article on the use of plastic gears including use in washing machine transmissions. This is a PDF file.

That video made me think of the Dyson CR washers. What a geniusly over-engeniered design they were.
However, I'm verry suprised this only happend at higher speed and verry sudden. I guess the centrifugal forces somehow dislogged the washplate part of the gear system. That noise was terrible.

Normal Operation

mrb627's profile picture
You know, I wondered if the normal operation of this model was to pause at the 6 minute mark before ramping up to top speed spin. Maybe to validate balance again. It is unusual, since the drive is on the wash plate and the tub is just interlocked for the ride. It is also interesting to note that there is no error detected on the machine's part. At least none displayed to the end user.

Wonder if the owner is having difficulty getting service out of Sears/LG... hence the video.

Printing plastic gears

That was a really interesting article on plastic gears. I wonder how long it will be before we can print our own replacement parts?

Do we know where that video came from? I would love to see what happened to cause this.

The guy who posted to the video on YouTube didn't comment on it much. He only added "The spin cycle on my Kenmore washing machine has an issue where the agitator will stop but the tub will keep spinning. It also makes a horrible sound." to the info box below the video.
