A friend of mine who knows I'm into old washers, but is not himself, has been going to a local auction every Wednesday.  A variety of stuff is sold, furniture, art, appliances, etc.

Now here is the timeline of how things played out.

4:30 pm: I plug my cell phone in to charge because it's low.

5:30 pm: I head to Costco to grab a couple things for a party I'm going to tomorrow, leaving my phone to charge.

5:34 pm: my friend who is at the auction, sends me a text and photos about this washer.

6 pm: I return home, put the items in the fridge, grab my phone, see there are a couple text messages and get in the car to go to a friends for dinner.   As I drive I use Siri to read the messages to me.

6:05 pm: When stopped at a traffic light I look at these photos and gasp!   I immediately reply, asking him to bid on it for me and give him a max.

6:08 pm: he replies saying "Too late, the auction went very quickly and it sold for $75"  Oh geeze!   Talk about a missed opportunity!   I said "CRAP"!  and then, "oh well, I didn't need it anyway.... but it would have been really NICE to have though!"

He also told me the washer was absolutely pristine, looked like it was just unboxed!

Here are the photos he sent me.   What is this, a 1963 - 1964?

WOW!  It's a '63, Kevin - just like mine but without the chipped top... LOL   Geez, I wonder if it still had its original mini-basket??  Now I'll be obsessing over that for weeks...

CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!(but thanks for the pictures)

Who would buy this machine if not a collector?

Yes, it is indeed a WA-950X from 1963; last of the raised panel Filter-Flo's. And a better machine than the TOL because of a hell of a lot more flexibility in the controls, two separate cycles, not one, and a simple bleach funnel not prone to rusting. Had this been a WA-950W I wouldn't be writing this, I'd be in a dark room somewhere with my head between my knees

You could call the auction house and see if they have a record of the buyer. Make an offer!

Sorry you missed her

We had that exact model for a couple of years before the clutch went and it would only operate in slow speed. Sometime after they fixed that, the lower oil seal on the transmission went and oil flowed across the painted floor of my sister's playroom, taking up the paint with it. Boy, was that a mess to find in the morning! My parents had Rich's pick up the washer and refund their money. The poor machine seemed to be a Friday the 13th model, but she sure was beautiful.

While she is a beauty for a collection, she is not a machine for a drought-stricken area unless you were able to reuse the water.

For $75 it's quite possible it was bought to be used as a "second hand" washer, with the possibility of being scrapped or dumped when it fails.

When this has happened to me, I find money talks. Usually by the end of the auction the winner has had time to cool a little and buyer's remorse starts to set in. "Oh crap, how much did I spend? Where am I going to put this? Wow, that looks heavy."

You'd be surprised how quickly people take the cash at the prospect of not having to drag home something they bought 30 minutes before! Of course all bets are off if your friend had already left. -C

I was thinking something similar, it's headed to a rental house.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry to hear about this....a bit disappointing, but don't get down about it.

And yes...wouldn't be surprised to see it on ebay for a much higher figure down the track.

Cheers
Leon

Holy Filter-Flo, Batman! We must know the fate of this machine! It does not deserve to fall into the wrong hands!
