well guys my three year old Candy started leaking last week .Because it lives in the scullery i it hasn't caused to much of a problem but this weekend i decided to either kill it or cure it so to speak [killing meaning a trip to the tip] after investigating all the usual suspects hoses door collar ect i found water leaking from a crack in the outer plastic drum and because of its position i had to remove the drum

to fix the problem

i decided to glue the crack with some heavy duty adhesive [the kind where you mix equal amounts ]its called ARALDITE this side of the pond .Once that had set i roughed up the area and then coated the whole area with a good thick layer of car body repair compound [it sets rock hard in half an hour]

the morning putting the machine back together its now back in the scullery and has done a boil wash plus two other loads with no leaks at all .So the Grand O lives on .while stripping down the machine my neighbor asked me what i was doing when i explained he said oh i would have just bought a new machine .i said yes you and thousands of others probably would but not me .Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem with one of these machines and is it common also what could have caused it

Congratulations!

Great job, and congratulations on going for a repair, instead of chucking it away like most of others would do. Although they're not as repairable as machines once were, there is quite a lot of things people refer to as "expensive PCB repair", while it's only something cheap like clogged filter, programme selector or carbon brushes...

I've seen and heared about many GrandO's and experiences with thtem, but I've never heared of a cracking tub, so it deffinitely isn't common. My guess could be something that maybe went in between the drum and tub under wrong angle and made it crack while machine was rotating? But it's really just a guess :)

Awesome fix

Odd place for a crack to appear though. I too am wondering how it got there.

Haha nice one! I had the same model as you ages ago, sold it in the end to make way for older, more interesting stuff. I would have just scrapped it if I were you.

years ive had the machine its performed faultlessly its a regular little work horse .yes its a cheap machine but it washes clothes just like an expensive machine .I bought it to replace another Candy machine that was 16 years old and when this one finally dies i will buy another cheap machine .While this machine has been out of action we have been using my mums 30 year old Hoovermatic twintub that cost twice as much as the Grand O how times have changed

Similar Experience...

Well done Anthony! A similar thing happened to me but in my case I knew the causes as the machine went on a 2000 mile journey and arrived all full of bruises and scratches and four broken transport brackets! Mine was a brand new machine and I applied similar techniques as you to patch the crack (I used liquid resin)... but by looking at yours it makes me feel that maybe I should've had you doing it for me cos' it seems you succeeded straight away with yours... whereas in my case, it was more of a matter of trial and error (I got there in the end... although I'm not sure this would be a permanent fix). At the beginning of the video below you can see the repaired tub.

Good For You

To have the nounce to take on this job, these composite tubs whilst hard wearing can be brittle in some ways.

Your repair is exactly how I would have done it:-)

And as you like the machine it is even better

Just out of interest do these tubs have a massive concrete weight screwed onto the bottom front? I know these can come loose and cause problems with the mountings shearing off and snapping the screws. worth making sure from time to time that the weight is not working loose, it isn't a good design feature

I had a Hoover with this sort of weight and it sheared the screws off, I drilled right through mounts and used studding with locking nuts and washers either end to make sure it never came loose again

interesting you having the same problem .At least your crack was accessible from the top i had to strip the whole machine .It was all trail and error with me i just slapped the stuff on let it set and hoped for the best i was delighted when it didn't leak .I suppose the use of more and more plastic is inevitable but i was surprised to find the drive wheel also made of plastic having said that the machine did cost under 200 pounds and up to now has given excellent service. To answer Electron 1100 s question about the lower concrete block yes there is one and mine had in fact come loose while the drum was out of the cabinet i took out the three bolts smeared then with some of the excess Araldite that i had made and then screwed them back in they wont be going anywhere anytime soon
