Hi all.

Been a while since I created a thread, but this is one that I intended to do a couple of years ago.
This is a follow on from the marathon picture posting session that was the Hotpoint 1st Automatic to final New Generation thread and will detail the follow on ranges, which together formed the unofficially titled 'Next Generation' range.

Essentially identical (barring the Microprofile) to the 1982 New Generation range, a fascia restyle in 1986 produced a look that would run through to the early 1990s.

One thing I noticed when selecting the photos to be used in this thread, was just how ebay dependent it will be! As such, some of the photos are not of the best quality in any way, shape or form - you will just have to grin and bear it :-)

Also and this may be difficult to believe, but some of the Next Generations are incredibly rare. So rare in fact, that for some I am dependent on line drawings from their instruction manuals, whilst for some models I have no images at all.

I will try and detail the models in numerical order (not range order), dealing with washers first, then dryers and finally the washer-dryers.

I know Brandon has been hankering after this thread for a while - hope it proves interesting for you.

Enough waffle - off we go ....

An issue ...

By numbering early exclusive models 9511, 12, 13, 31 and 33 within what was to become the core range numbering system, Hotpoint effectively wrote off any full ranges ending with the numbers 1, 2 and 3, hence the jump to models ending in 4.

The numbering of late new generation machines in the next generation numbering range also messed things up a little - see the 9550, 9570, 9571 and 9900 in the other thread.

Further exclusive models would in future be numbered in their own 957X number range, started off with the 9570 and 9571 and later, when this filled up, the 977X range.

So basically all these models had the same timers apart from the final spin speeds. ie 800 or 1000 rpm.

Just like our Hotpoint 9536 that spun at 1000rpm rather than 800 rpm but everything else was the same.

Hi Craig.

Afraid that I am not an expert where the mechanical technicalities are concerned.

similar would be accurate, but I don't think identical as there were certainly programming differences between the 800/1000rpm and the variable 1000rpm machines. Spin patterns differed between the two types and the variable 1000rpm models had additional programmes.
Anyone able to clarify?

Paul

September 1993

AQUARIUS vs AQUARIUS ULTRA ....

the Ultras had Silk Printed acetates programme over the standard Aquarius, but more visually obvious were the styling differences.
Whilst the Aquarius versions looked more or less the same as previous models, the Ultra's boasted a sloping front edge to the lid, which was trimmed around all edges (no more broken lid strips).

The dial finger grip had a wave in the moulding, rather than the straight edge of old and the fascia plastic was shiny smooth, rather than the mottled finish. The years have proved the Ultra finish to be a lot less prone to brittle plastic syndrome and I don't think I have ever seen one with a damaged fascia.

The door was restyled, with the Ultra's having a door release button instead of a door mounted manual handle.

Some may have noticed that in the 9536 sentence I used the word 'original' to describe the June 1991 9536.
This is because August 1995 saw a model introduced bearing the same model number!

Quite what the point of this model was is not altogether clear, as it was identical to the 2nd version WM21, which would be introduced the following month. Trial run to market test the new WM 2nd version features maybe i.e the on/off button, rather than pull on/push off dial?

Hotpoint 9540

Hi Paul,

Great thread as always.

The spin slider machines have always been my favourite Hotpoints - I have a pristine example of the 9540, albeit with the mottled door rather than the glossy door (unfortunately the seller had damaged it whilst moving it to his garage ready for me to collect, so close but so far). Also have the matching 9530 dryer so it's a true "De Luxe" example of an 80s Hotpoint set.

I've attached some pictures from my phone below - I also have some proper pictures on my camera memory card, but god knows where that is!

All the best

Jon

Hi Paul!

How can I ever thank you for creating this thread, some very nice pictures of these stunning machines.

The 9517, I was brought up around this machine as my Nanny & Grandad (Grandad who passed away in 2012) had one, it was brought from the Arding & Hobbs in Clapham Junction in South London, but it served many years before being replaced by our WM51 First Edition.

Didn't realise the 9512 actually had green font on the fascia :)

Thanks once again.

Brandon.

Our Hotpoint 9530

Hi Paul (and all)

Great and very interesting thread. Certainly filled in a few 'blanks' of info for me.

I was sorting out some old photos today and came across this one from mid-1987, which is the Hotpoint 9530 Electronic 1000 Plus in almond, in our kitchen, that I grew up with from about age 11 onwards.

This 9530 was bought from Rumbelows in Horsham, and replaced our Electra GL2. Although I have fond memories of the 9530 (the famous Hotpoint motor noise!), it was pretty unreliable, in particular the water level pressure tube which often got blocked, causing the machine to keep filling and water to pour out the dispenser, also brushes and bearing failure. It did however last for 10 years, and could have been repaired (bearings again!) but mum had had enough and bought a Siemens machine.

Looking at the pic, I think this would have been on program 4 (50degree synthetics) which my mum used to use most of the time. It had advanced to 6 (40degree synthetics), and then was doing the cool-down before rinse 1 judging from the water level.

Love the kitchen decor too(!), and the big pack of Persil - with the 'Kids eat free' promotion for Little Chef on it.

Cheers guys,

Graham

I love this thread Paul as all your other ones as its great to see the evolution of the models - are we getting another instalment of the next gens? I'd love to see where my microprofile fits in.

That's a great picture Graham. I think that wallpaper is similar to the one in the pictures of the Hotpoint liberator de luxe that Rob picked up in Liverpool and I love the big box of New System Persil - that was in the days when they always came with a measuring cup!

I always used to prefer Hoover machines when I was younger - I think they always seemed to be a bit more dramatic but I'm falling more and more for these older Hotpoints - perhaps its the noise of the springs!

I love threads like these, you can really get a feel for how the technology and looks grew and developed over time.

Great photo too Graham! I love how even back then people still ignored the pull strip to open the box of Persil and just ripped the top open instead!

Sorry for the delay in updating!

Thanks to Jon for pictures of his 9540 - a smart bit of kit! Survived by the skin of its teeth - if I remember rightly, it was delisted from ebay due to the door being broken off it and would probably have been handed to the local council, had jon not got in touch with seller. Thank goodness you did jon, as now we have a fine example of this model in preservation.

Hi Brandon. Glad you are enjoying the thread - I know you have been hankering after such a thread for a few years now. Sorry it took so long to get round to creating one.

Thanks for posting the photo of your families 9530. A very nostalgic picture, complete with a box of New System Persil Automatic. Classic!

Hi Matt and Steve ..... will reach the Microprofile's soon! Next chapter along soon.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul, no need to apologise, I understand sometimes creating a thread such as this can take some time. It's good to be able to see some of the 'Next Generation' models that I had heard of but never seen a picture of (9512, 9528 etc), I only remember a few 95s from my childhood, my Nanny & Grandad's 9517(W), my other Grandparents on my dad's side had a polar white 9526 and my neighbour had a 9530, as well as a couple of other houses when my parents split up.

Just to ask, I understand the term 'Next Generation' is unofficial by Hotpoint, so we're the previous models actually known as the New Generations? Sorry I'm asking so much, I'm just curious about these terms.

Thanks.
Brandon.

Paul, what a fantastic thread! Well done!

Those 800 spin 9525's were absilutely everywhere when I was a kid! That pic of the 9526 is fantastic, I've never seen a 95 series looking so white.

@Brandon: Yes Hotpoint officially called the earlier 95 series the "New Generation". This was due to an entire redesign of the range and a new factory having to be built. Hotpoint probably wanted to take advantage of this to market their machines so "New Generation" was coined.

Once again Paul this is a fantastic thread and that kitchen in the last picture is stunning!

James

Hi James, thank you :) that cleared up a bit of confusion there.

Thought I would share this picture of me in front of my Auntie Kate & Uncle Gary's Hotpoint 9526(P) Electronic 800 De Luxe. What is iconic about this picture, this was their previous house in Kinmel Bay, North Wales in which they were just down the road from the Hotpoint factory.

This machine was later passed on to my Nanny & Grandad Carroll (dad's side) who sadly passed away in 2003/2004. Alas the machine also went.
One thing I noticed, it has the more common 'missing bodystrips' virus that many flush door 95s tend to suffer. Not sure why.

Note to self...the only time you will ever find me in front of one of these (because it's off), otherwise to this day I am still terrified of the sound they make when going into spin, I know it sounds really silly, but oh well, fond memories.

Brandon.

Cracking photo Brandon!

many thanks for sharing with us.

You mention missing side strips on your family 9526 - From the 95X6 models onwards, I think hotpoint dropped the sidestrips, but retained the lid strips through to the Aquaruis models. The lid strips went with the Aquarius Ultra models.

9550 Microtronic De Luxe L.E

New Generation alert! Here is the 9550, the updated 95842 introduced in March 1985, but with a time delay function. This feature was introduced, following pressure applied from the electricity board shops.
This was one of the very late new generation machines, numbered within the new range model system.

p.s re New and Next Generation - the New Generaion was a formal slogan employed by Hotpoint.
The term Next Generation is purely a Discuss O Mat name, applied to the follow on range and sounds a lot better than the original moniker we applied to them all those years ago - anyone remember the 'New New Gens' :-)

9551 Microtronic 1000 De Luxe

With Hotpoint carelessly using the 9550 for a non-Next Generation machine, the new Microtronic took up the next available model number 9551. Introduced in June 1986, this is the possibly the rarest core range Next Generation model washing machine - put it this way ..... this is the only image I have of the 9551 ..... I have never seen one in the flesh and I have never seen one on ebay. If you see a 9551 - gerrit saved!

April 88 - I don't know about you, but from the 9551 onwards, the Microtronic's fascia produces a rather plain looking machine. Definitely feels like a case of no longer TOTR :-(

Hi Paul

I have the Hotpoint brochure that goes with the summary one so here are a couple of pages of detail of the 9551. I've done them one at a time but can scan the whole brochure at work if you want a copy.

OMG Steve!

Hi Steve.

Deffo, pretty please can I take you up on your kind offer of a copy of that brochure. I am soooooo hoping that it has within its pages the first image I will ever have seen of the 9340 Sensor Dryer!

Interesting to see that the original plan appears to have been that Microprofile's have a normal metal lid with side trims, rather than the fully trimmed formica style top that they received, when released to the public. V interesting.

The 9544 looks in great condition. The rather jumpy sounding distribute could either be brushes or a failing tacho on the motor. The 18371 we have up here first manifested the latter issue, by speeding up the wash speed considerably. Was interesting to watch with water in, but not with a load as it caused it to bang and shift around the floor. Machine than went into storage for a couple of years - plugged it in when it moved to Ripley some months ago and it now does nothing but spin, as the tacho has now completely failed.

Sure you will sort it, whatever the issue and its a lovely machine to add to your superb collection.

Fingers crossed for a 9340! :-)
Next update soon.
Paul

Hi Paul

I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you as it doesn't have the 9340. The top of the range in this brochure is a 9330. I have some Hotpoint product information guide for the 9344 but that is just a line drawing. Will see if I can scan the brochure this week when no ones looking lol

Ahhh, well.

May the search for the fabled 9340 continue.

I went and checked last night and saw that the 9340 didn't arrive on the scene until a year and a half after the Microprofile. With the brochure being an early print, the 9330 would indeed have been top of the range.

Nevertheless, it looks a great brochure - don't get yourself into trouble scanning it!

9556 1200 MICROPROFILE

Introduced in June 1991, this is the machine that killed off the Microtronic and taking its place in the line up.
With a 1200 rpm spin, this model was a slightly less fancy version of the top of the range model and carried a traditional style lid, with side strips ....

9560 Microprofile 1300 De Luxe

Jumping back in time to May 1986 when the new top of the range model was introduced, with the arrival of the new Microprofile 1300 De Luxe.

Using a full digital display screen, this was Hotpoint's fastest spinning front loader though, despite being called a 1300, the service information gives that game away that it actually was a 1400rpm machine.

Introduced 'PROFILE' spin, whereby the machine spins at gradually increasing increments, with tumbling and re-distributing in between each spin speed.

A smart looking machine, very expensive and made a big impression on me when Mr Briggs at number 8 bought one, to replace his Servis Supertwin. Am sure it made an impression on him too - particularly when it did top speed, as the GEC motors weren't exactly quiet!

Hi Paul

Didn't get into trouble scanning it but almost crashed the print server. Its more the ribbing I'd get from colleagues even though they know I'm into washers lol

Anyway, will ping to you tomorrow probably but here are the pages on the 9560 from the brochure to add to your thread.

Paul, wouldn't the 9340 be identical to the 9344? Like in the same case as the 9320 and 9324? Just perhaps different style font for the model name (9XX0 using Capital and lower-case letters, 9XX4 using block capitals)?

I don't know, just my thought on that, perhaps it was different for the Microprofiles.

9340

sesteve's profile picture
Hi Paul

I recently acquired some service information manuals and the one covering the dryers mentions that the 9340 was a pre production model which might explain the lack of images. According to the manual the 9344 was the first production model so should be identical. The only difference I can spot is the power supply for the PCB.

Interesting note on the delay in the Aquarius range as well!

Hope this helps with the mystery machine.
Steve

I found this washing machine/dryer that I am confused with
I don't know if it was English Electric or Hotpoint 9515

The picture was in the link below
