I finally got the laundry sink and plumbing all hooked up in my shed. Yesterday I got Gram's old Maytag out of the basement and into the shed. 3 or 4 years ago I used it and it ran fine. I plugged it in and the motor just buzzed and kept tripping the breaker. I thought because I had to put it on its side to get it in the door opening, that may have something to do with it, so I waited and tried it again today and same thing. I cant move the agitator right or left but it removes easily. I tried moving the one pulley you can get your hands around and I cant budge it either. Am I doomed to have to rebuild it?

Could it be the starter on the motor that needs attention. Does is smoke?

No it does not smoke or smell, just trips the breaker within seconds.

Disconnect the belt, and see if the motor runs.

I will try that tomorrow when I have a chance, thanks Kenny. At least its a start to troubleshoot it since I doubt that nobody since the factory ever touched the underneath of this machine.

Power unit is locked up

If you can't turn the pulley, and the motor can't either, it's because something locked up in the power unit. The only way to fix it it to dismantle it down to the power unit by taking the tub out and removing the center plate and figure out what's locking it up. I did it a few years ago. While it's not for the faint of heart, It's not as intimidating as it seems. I'm no mechanic but it really wasn't THAT difficult. Lots of help here if you brave it our and want to proceed.

I was hoping Larry, that it was something simple not a major teardown that I dont want to do. I cant understand that it worked fine before and now will not, even though its been in a heated basement all this time and now that I finally have it where I can use it during the warmer months it wont run. Oh well, I am not going to loose sleep over it.

But...

A machine can break any time. It doesn't matter if it ran yesterday or 10 years ago. One day you go to use something, and it won't work. Oh the Betrayal these machines can do to us! Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks, Larry. I will decide just what to do even though its been less than a day then everything happened the wrong way naturally. Knock on wood, everything else here is at least 20 years old and still works fine. I know I am WAY pushing my luck, lol.
