Maytag dryer model LDG 409. A good low mileage daily driver of a dryer until ..... I pulled out a load of clothes and wow, were they hot. No cool down. After checking out "other cycles" on this dryer I have come across these problems ... On timed dry, no cool down. On air fluff I get a normal cycle/off/on flame until timer shuts it off. On auto dry I get no heat until it goes to the "cool down" phase and then it flames up !! What else ??? Dryer has excellent airflow, rigid duct, has been kept lint free, no scuffed wires, shorts etc. Dryer and ALL features worked 100 per cent correct until this ... As far as temps , with slight damp load on low temp it runs at 110 to 160 degrees. On regular temp it runs at 120 to 160. No difference if temp selector switch is on low or regular heat ... same symptoms. So any ideas ???

MT Dryer Cycle Problems

combo52's profile picture

The timer dial and knob may not be assembled correctly causing you to not get the cycle you are setting the dryer for, other than this you probably have a bad timer. MT used several different timer manufactures during this period of time and some of them were pretty bad.

No cycle cool down

@combo52

Dial hasn't been disassembled in my possession. I can "feel" the switch drop in position when I turn the dial and know where its going to miss-cycle. Make sense ?? Was hoping it to be in one of the thermostats , easier fix than the timer as timer is NLA. Right ?? Part number Y 305020 ??

When my parents got a big door Maytag dryer, I noticed on a trip home that the timer shut off the dryer when it should have begun the cooldown at the 3 minute mark in the normal drying cycle. I had her call for service, but the Maytag guy said there was nothing wrong so I wrote to Maytag and they sent someone to replace the bad timer. John's very right that they had some bad timers.

Problem timer

@Tomturbomatic
I guess I'll contact ApplianceTimer.com in Canada for help unless I can come across one here ... just don't like to be without a dryer for a few weeks or so as I hate to see the wife lug that heavy wet laundry to the car and then having to ask her "have enough quarters" ?? It never goes over well ...

(Polite tone)

If you hate to see the wife tote laundry to be dried, why not take it there yourself, unless you are physically incapable of doing so?

In my part of the country, there are late night/24 hour laundromats.......

From what you describe, you have bigger problems than lack of cooldown at the end of the timed cycle, so getting a good timer is important.

Have contacted Turners Timer and Appliance Timers in Canada per web and have talked to them about shipping, repair, etc. Wasn't able to get hold of that place in Florida. Will hold back on removing and shipping for a few days as I would like to find one from one of you guys first. I'm willing to bet on that back shelf in the workshop covered in dust someone will have ... Maytag dryer timer Y 305020. Also, it should be remembered by me, the last time I mailed off something to Canada I never got it back !! 25 or so years ago I mailed off a 8 x 10 photo of Bobby Hull to his , at that time, home address for an autograph. I'm still waiting its return.

Timer

This is the timer needed. Dryer model DG 409 ... parts diagrams I come across show part 3-5020 also Y305020. Printed on my removed timer reads 3-04071. Any thoughts ??

No timer needed

After some trouble shooting on the timer I concluded the timer was A.O.K. This led me to the thermostats per schematic. I replaced them both and dryer has worked 100 per cent correct, with proper cool down phases, no heat on air fluff , etc. Dryer works like it was designed. I just feel so much better having it work properly. Enclosed another photo next to its matching washer. The mighty 409 & 107 just chillin ' ...
