As you have seen on the vac forum, Alistair, (Vacbear58) has setup a new vacroom in his new home and has done the same for a new vintage washroom allowing a few of us to get our stuff out of storage enabling us to display and use them again.

The room is a purpose built exterior room built as a hobby room by previous occupants, brick built, well insulated and has mains electricity and services. So heres a look at the transformation and the new "Vintage Washroom".

A new Vintage Washroom..

chestermikeuk's profile picture
The first thing we did was to map out how why what and where we could fit stuff in, and what it might look like and the start to empty it out...we figured the best way would be to have "Stacked Sets" of washers & dryers around the wall area to maximise space and a central low level area for top loaders, wringers spinners etc..

And so the preparation begins, the walls had lots of used wall fittings that needed removing and filling..

Next step was the services, with stacked sets around the walls we made a decision that water & electricity needed to be easily accessible, so where sited at high level so we could switch on and off from the back without dragging sets out.

Electricity first, ring main fitted at the top level for easy reach, separate plugs for each washer & dryer.

Next the individual standpipes for the washing machines, we piped all the way around (much to amusement of the floormen) allowing a slope over the length of the wall to flow the water out the back and to a mains drain!!

Next up was the water connections, we opted for a simple cold connection as all washers have heaters, although we have planned for a hot fill on phase 2 for the filling of top loaders..Plastic polypipe quick fit plumbing was used which allows for easy runs around walls and corners etc - although I will say it tested the patience of many because of the spring in the coiled piping, Best warmed up first and flexed for ease of use!!

A new Vintage Washroom..Flooring

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Now onto the flooring, a high impact contract flooring was used and the colour "Water Blue" was chosen, which turned out great contrasting nicely with the white appliances.

The floor was sealed over one day with a polymer membrane, screeded and levelled the next, allowed to dry and then a few days later the flooring was sealed to the floor. After that skirting board was fitted and sealant applied all the way around in case of the proverbial leak or flood.

And filling up the spaces, was great fun to see the golden oldies coming out of hibernation!! The centre podium is shaping up nicely with toploaders and spinners, The Parnall SpinWasher is a hit although requires a refurb on the clutch, and the spinners very handy to spin out all excess water before line drying!!

A new Vintage Washroom...

chestermikeuk's profile picture
There are a few modern washers & dryers as well as the vintage , Al`s modern Miele set and my trusty Maytag Euroline set made by Asko, these have been with me since just before the convention @ Roberts in 2001 and have journeyed with me through thick and thin and have been present at wash-ins when all have come together.

The digital displays can be problematic after storage, as I was cleaning them I had forgotten I had plugged them in at the mains - on cleaning the start button on the fascia they came on, I was startled as I wanted them to acclimatise and thought I might have damaged them - never fear that display lit up perfectly, it was a good sign of a long and weary road travelled, I dialled a spin and they roared to life, and the tears did flow!!
Life had come full circle and complete!!

Great to have vintage cookbooks. And the food looks much better than in Back in time for dinner! ;-)

I'm unfamiliar with most if not nearly all the washers in your collection, but it's a prize collection excellently displayed. I think the blue color is probably different "in person", but the contrast idea was definitely good. The Hoover collection is !!! great. Your collection exceeded my imagination of what you were planning for that space.

Just great, congratulations on your hard work, guys.

I can confirm ...

... that, as one of the early visitors, the place is fantastic!

Congratulations to Al and Mike on a grand transformation of a room, into a superb museum space (one of a number at that address!).

All hard work paying off and it is lovely to see lots of familiar old machines, that we all worshipped at 'Shavvy Av', settled in their new home and able to be seen working again.
Plus we have those machines secured over the more recent years, such as Al's Philips Variatronic 082 (a childhood machine of mine) and the Parnall Spinwasher.
Just brilliant! Well done guys.

Paul & Rob

Hi Louis, where the Acme spin dryers sold with you or have you had it imported? its certainly a heavy beast, it needed a new cable and now awaiting suitable capacitor as it keeps tripping the circuit - yes the food deffo better than back in Time for Tea!!

Hi Mark, will let you know in good time when meeting up, also let us know when you are visiting, can always arrange a visit!!!

Hi Phil, yes the Hoover Keymatics are the stars of the show, cant resist those Keyplates, and more to change around and see over the next year!!

Evening Paul, great memories from the Holt`s Laundry Room and the 3243 certainly is having its fair share of use, especially as the heater relay has been fitted!!

Mike,

Those Acme spindryers were sold in the Netherlands too. I have a little brochure in Dutch of the Acme appliances of that time. I came across mine in a second hand appliance shop. They wanted to dump it, so I got it for a few Euros. Mine is very noisy, you can wake the dead with that noise! It's on display in the kitchen, I never use it. If someone is interested they can take it with them.

A new Vintage Washroom...

Thank you to all for your kind comments, they are much appreciated.

Its hard to believe that its just over a year ago a telephone call started this all off and such a lot has happened since.

What you are seeing is actually towards the end point of a process which involved selling one house, which amongst various tasks involved moving "the collection" (and be assured the washers and dryers were the smallest part of it) into storage, and buying another some 150 miles away.

With some decoration and other small projects the old house sold very easily and quickly - but there was a month's gap between vacating the old house and moving into the new (to me) house - just before Christmas. This was not helped by a touch or arthritis in both hands and one knee to remind me that I am getting older and hernia surgery a month before the move out - I am convinced that moving a Miele washing machine down a flight of stairs (even with gravity to help!) was what finally brought that on.

But this was always the objective - facilities where machines would not only be stored but where they could all be brought back into working order, displayed, enjoyed and indeed celebrated - the inspiration came from seeing some of the facilities you guys in US and Canada had built.

You can imagine how excited I was when I came across this house on my first trip to view properties with not only a garage but three extra spaces pretty much ready made for appliances.

But the house had to be right too and in fact it suits me very well indeed - I am very happy with it.

It was a bitterly cold 14th December 2014 when Mike (and Paul & Rob) got to see in real life what had been discussed and planned over many phone calls and emails. Although the space seemed huge (the washer room is actually about 20ft x 16ft) it did not take long to get filled up as truck loads of stuff made the journey from London to Nottinghamshire and they had to be unloaded into the first available space.

So the last six months has not only been the preparation of this room, but the vacuum cleaner room and a good deal of work inside the house.

For those who do not visit vacuumland the vacuum cleaner studio is on the link

Special thanks

vacbear58's profile picture
As confirmation that the sale was going ahead only came on the 6th December and it was by then so close to Christmas that I was obliged once again do the removals myself for there was no chance to get a removal company to do it before Christmas and I was determined that I had to be moved in (and I almost was) by Christmas.

But I am very fortunate to have friends who stepped forward to help out for, during both phases of the move, my capacity for lifting things, or even bending and stretching, was severely limited due to my surgery in october.

So there are a number of people to whom I need to give my sincere thanks.

(Lavamat)Jon and his partner Jack for helping with the removals from London

(Matchbox)Paul & Rob (Aquarius1984) for helping with the unloading in Nottinghamshire not once but twice, the second occasion being invaluable help on Christmas morning.

Mathew(Keymatic3203) for loaning some of his Keymatics to allow us to (almost) complete the Keymatic timeline from start to finish, and for coming up for a most pleasant weekend to check they were all in full working order along with sorting out a few other machines.

It has also been a great pleasure to welcome an old friend Austin(ozzie998) for practical help and advice and a fund of great stories and a new friend Richard (Ricky5050), also great company with interesting tip and advice gleaned from his collecting. We were also mightily entertained (and impressed!) with the ultra-rare Electrolux Dishmaid he brought with him - there should be another thread on that soon.

But the biggest thanks must go to Mike for all has done to bring this all about. It goes back a long way before the start of this project - many of us have been on the receiving end of his wonderful hospitality at "Shavvy Ave" which, in many ways, was a template for what has done here.

Without his invaluable help in both phases of the move I just could not have done it - on one occasion 24 hours at a stretch, towards the end of which he had to endure my singing (to help me keep awake while driving) which I know is enough to test any friendship to its absolute limits!

But it was in his sheer physical hard work, often in cold, wet miserable weather, that the credit for what has been achieved here must rest. His was the labour to bring this all about for he left me free to a very large extent to concentrate on getting settled into my new home and have things as I wanted them.

And, in all our discussions about these projects were to be developed there has not been a single cross word.

At all times a laugh and interesting conversation no matter how tired or fed up with it all Mike might have felt with it himself, have helped me enormously to deal with the disruption my life has been going through for the last year.

THANK YOU Mike.

And what of the future?

vacbear58's profile picture
The layout shown above is certainly not final as there are still more machines to be accommodated and indeed it has long been the intention that from time to time some machines will be swopped out for others so all can be enjoyed.

As Mike has indicated above we, somewhat inevitably, have rather less space than we could have wished for to accommodate everything. Fortunately my garage is secure and dry - little did I realise when I read of John Le F's (Combo52) wall of dishwashers that I might be doing something similar here - well that's my own fault - I will keep buying them LOLOL On the other side it looks like there will be a wall of twinnies, wringers and spin dryers which also will eventually all be restored to full working order too.

Happily I have an attic space which is already home to the overflow of my vacuum collection and which is planned can also house the many small appliances in our collections - I do have some on display in my kitchen diner and that too is likely to be a "revolving" display.

I am fortunate that the plot (USA - Lot) my house sits on is large enough that I can possibly build another display space - at the rate I am going the display spaces will be bigger than the house - but it would be nice to be able to have some small kitchen sets so that the appliances can be seen in their proper context - but that is not for this year.

But we both look forward (for it is not and it never has been just MY space) to seeing many more AW members in the future - the Welcome mat will be at the door.

Al

Thank you for your kind words, can I respectfully suggest you get your ass down to a travel agent and get your ticket booked before the summer is gone. And that goes for anyone else who would like to cross the pond for a visit.

However Dewers is definitely NOT on the agenda! Being raised in Northern Ireland there can be only one whiskey in my house, and be assured it is like nectar. How will you have it?

Lamingtons

vacbear58's profile picture
Gosh there must have been shrieks and clutching of pearls from Australia when my simple, if somewhat luridly iced cakes, where described as Lamingtons.

They are simply a variation of the Victoria Sandwich baked in a square tin and then cut into squares and iced, very simple and indeed the first baking I did in my new kitchen. And they were mixed in a Mixmaster too!

I will post the recipes of both cakes when I am back home at the weekend.

I have to say again the hard work certainly has paid off, you really need a traditional Bedford CF van lettered up for the local electricity board to help with removals.

Mike
It'd be great to catch up, you're welcome to call in any time. Let me know.

Beifall! Dieser Waschkeller ist vorbildlich!

hi guys,

This is absolutely stunning. What a dream!
I do not even know where to begin: The colours, the polished floor, all that planning, the arrangement. Even spotlights on the ceiling to give it all an inviting shine.

Who doesn't want to be there? And so many cannot even dream of having such a lovely place, let alone having all that space at all.
I am more than impressed. Bravo!
Your Insitute of Applied Keymatics gives a whole new meaning to "I'm feeling so blue". Simply can't be any better.

Now if I were you, I would start holding classes for future appliance repairmen or some little "stains out" seminars for the local adult education in order to re-finance all that labour. ;-D

All I can say is WOW! I've dreamt of having all front loading stacked washers and dryers aligned like this with mirror walls to be able to wash and watch numerous models with them all synchronized to reverse tumble in time with each other. Sometimes,my LGs do the opposite as one goes clockwise the other goes counterclockwise. One way, they look like the clothes are all together going toward each other. Then, they reverse and look like they're trying to get away from each other. I just love sitting and watching my washers. Because there are five of us and five dogs that stay indoors most of the time as well as a cat and two teenagers,  I wash clothes daily. I make sure we have enough detergent and hot water to do at least four loads all at once. The neighbors heard from their kids about my "wash house"and stopped over to see what the kids were talking about. When they saw my laundry room on the back patio under a big tin roof, they sat down to see it wad all real and it all is hooked up and in operation, they laughed then asked me why it was so excited,to have them and why they all are hooked up and going. I told them I don't collect cars or motor cycles because ive neither had a driver's license nor a vehicle to drive other then a moped and bicycle. I loved watching our Lady Kenmore front loading washer dryer combination and had the set vice man,Chuck, splice some wire to make the interior drum light come on as soon as you turn the timer to set the cycle with the door open or closed and turn itself off at the end of each wash dry cycle. Ours was new in 1963 and lasted with only two major service calls until 1993. Thirty years!!!!! My step mother hated it and replaced it with a cheap, small capacity Whirlpool two speed. Hated it.

Too see so many excellent machines brought together in a very suitable room that has had so much time and effort put into it is truly amazing.

The hard floor finish will be good for avoiding those "killer heels" marks and plenty of room for twirling in those "A" line skirts.

It is just breath taking to see so many beautiful machines together, maybe a few sunshine yellow gingham curtains will contrast with the blue

It is lovely just lovely that after these years this has come about aswell as Paul and Robs collection and showing room.

Ripley is now the retro washer capitol of England, bugger the design museum on the south bank in London

Congratulations to Al for providing the building and to Mike for chipping a few nails fitting it out.

Wonderful

laundry space, wonderful appliances and above all wonderful friends. What future events will happen here? New friendships I'm sure and of course after the wall of keymatics, many more restorations and collection firsts to come.

A big well done to Al and Mike, great to visit and to be part of the first wash in weekend. Sorry to have missed Ricky by a week, but hopefully meet you another time soon.

Great Acme booklet Louis, Not seen the twin tub viewed from above before. These acme machines were certainly solid, lots of cast iron, from the which magazine data and from a service guys memory those twin tubs were twice the weight of most of other manufacturers machine, going by the spinners and dryers I can believe it.

So well done and lets raise a cap of conditioner to the future

Richard, finally great to meet up after all these years, look forward to the next visit and yes 2 or more extra washing lines are needed, but I did find my Grans bag of Laundry Pegs...

Robbie, will let you know dates etc just working out with Al at the mo...

Hi Leon, thanks and more work ongoing, changing boots and checking timers etc but not too bad after years in storage..

Todd yes Jon Jetcone insisted on toasting the washers at every occasion, it became a fun early evening ritual after the afternoon repairs of the day!!

Hi Joe, yes am thinking of small groups of The Womens Institute and get them to tell their stories with afternoon tea of course!! You win the whiskey with the "The Institute of Applied Keymatics" only one more to come over from Mathew`s to complete the style lineup!!

Thanks Louis for the brochure, never seen that one, we have the spinner and large and small dryers and as mathew says they weigh an absolute ton, do you know if that is a switch on the LHS of the washer lid or a lock?

Hi Robert, yes Washateria I like, am keeping an eye open for a pastel coloured proverbial Jetcone or Whirlpool...

Neil, next up for repair now is the Electra Creda 11500, got a new door boot and bearing kit, after storage the drum is completely seized!!

Hello Craig, well I really enjoyed connecting this machine up with its AEG motor and anti-clockwise spin its become one of my favourites - AND its the first machine that I made a video of, just finishing off the edit, youre gonna love it!!

Hello Chuck, nothing like a load of vintage washers all working to take you back in time, glad to hear you`re enjoying yours as much as we are here!!

Hi Michael, we used a high impact vinyl flooring which is used here under the Altro brand and is used extensively in Industrial Kitchens, Washrooms and Healthcare facilities - 2 options a grainy hard surface or a smooth option like this, this model is a smooth finish in a variety of colours and is easy wash/wipe and buff clean, its not completely scratch free but can be buffed out - Nowthen we are dealing with metal appliances with sharp edges so the chances are if a sharp metal strip meets the floor and is dragged across it chances are any flooring with scratch and indent, I use the thin sheet boards you can see in the pics when I was moving the machines to avoid scratches but we have had an incident with a delivery driver not adheering to policy and scratch ensued, moral of the story do it yourself then you only have yourself to blame!! - saying that its a great flooring and really pleased with it, we looked at the vast range of colours but kept coming back to this one, And Yes - its very blue but it works great with our range of white appliances!!

Luke, youre not that far away to come and visit on the next meetup, will let you know when!! and what might you`re favourite Brand / Model be?

Gary - Satnav Update, Bib & Tucker Required ha ha...

Morning Mathew, a big thanks to you as well for the Keymatics of the World line up and your encouragement in getting this project completed, you are right when you say "Its All About The New Friendships", who would have thought me buying a Kirby Tradition in 2001 and looking on line for spares, finding the Yahoo Classic Appliances Club as was, getting on a plane to Minneapolis a few months later, coming back and engaging us all to meet up and the rest is history...Great Friendships Indeed!!

Al, many thanks to you for the chance to make this, our new project happen, its great to see the pleasure that everyone to date is having after all the work and looking forward to many more meet up and new friendships, looks like the Bushmills is on order then, Rosalies on its way have just heard!!

Spoilt for choice up north we are now.

think how many machines are there and how many can be used!!!!!

And yes the "Hotpot" island is a great idea, though you might need to weld 2 six inch nails across the main supply board for the house as things might get a bit warm if there is a mass wash in, which would be great as i wont have to lift a finger and can do as I normally do..........SOD ALL.........ha ha
