I am set to pick up a Frigidaire 1-18 washer and matching dryer this weekend. I need another W/D like I need a hole in my head, but I cannot pass up a thumper! I've read more about the washers than the dryers. I've never even seen a 1-18 dryer. I understand the dryers weren't much to sing about and tended to be less durable than many others.

Any reccommendations on how to move them without damaging anything? Do the dryers have to be kept upright or anything?

This should be interesting.
Dave

If you are able to move them in a truck or van, it's always best to leave any machine standing on its feet when possible.

I have moved things upright. It's a PITA to get them in (the rear hatch is about 2" too short) but it can be done!

Same here

Dave, I assume you are getting the ones near Cleveland? I was actually thinking about how I could get their to get that pair, too!

I am doing the same thing: I am picking up the 1-18 near ATL next week & transporting it to Chattanooga in a mini van. I have 2 possibilities if it is too tall. I will first take the top off to see if it will fit. If that doesn't work, another member said to get those swimming pool "noodles" & position them around the outer tub of the washer to stabilize it on its' side which I thought was a good idea.

While I am no expert on the dryer, I have broken one down many years ago & rebuilt it. It seems to me that it would almost be best to lye it face down for transport. And, I loved that dryer & the giant opening of the door. Never a problem with it.

However, maybe a more experienced member than I could give their opinion. Good luck.

Taking the tops off is a good idea, and IIRC, relatively easy.

Laying them down will not hurt a thing especially the dryer, either would be best on the sides or back to prevent cabinet finish damage.

1-18 dryers

Thumpers are one of the great washers to watch, great cleaning, excellent turnover, fantastic rinsing. Loud fun, like a Norge.

I hear bad stories about the dryers, but my one and only 1-18 dryer, mid-level 1978, works well. Gas model, accurate, darn loud buzzer to wake the dead, etc.

Good luck with yours, every washer hobbyist needs some time with a 1-18 for sure.

The set I am going for has not been listed here at all. Thy are coming through a connection from the appliance parts store where I work. If there is a set in Cleveland, someone needs them!

well yes it would be better to move it in its feet but I got this one home on its back and she is fine it was loaded on a fridge dolly so I didn't crush the drain spout

I got 'em!

They are still loaded in my Honda. The dryer is on its side, but the washer is upright. They are white, and I believe the washer is a model WIG (if I read it right). That means I now have 2 1-18 washers, a WC7 and a WIG. I have tested neither of them yet because I am still renovating my house. I hope to get one in service by the end of the year.

Now if only I can find a place to put them...

It looks like the Elite/Custom Imperial from around 1978. "Tuch N Wash" a three speed fourteen cycle eighteen pound capacity set. I had the washer in Baltimore but,John L. may.have it. Nothing wrong with it wn I got it. The interesting feature is that,no matter which cycle or agitation speed you select.the agitator won't move in the fast speed until.the water level is above a certain level in.the tub to.eliminate the water to.splash tom high causing leakage from the tubs. Great features, nice design. Huge tub and Rapidry spin.

Chuck,

Frigidaire discontinued the 3 speed models after 1976. The last 3 speed model was the "WIC" it was replaced by the 2 speed WIC-A in 1977-78 and the 1979 Elite (WEG) was also a 2 speed.

The 1979 Custom Imperial (WCIG) was equivalent of the former "WIA" from 1975 with the 6 position fabric selector and no lighted control panel, no pre-wash or extra rinse cycles like the previous Custom Imperial models had.

See:

The 1979 1-18 washer Tech Talk is available for download on this site:

And one more in which Peteski50 posted the following picture from the 1979 Frigidaire line:

And one last picture showing the 4 series of washers and dryers from the "regular" Frigidaire line in 1979.
