Smart Phone Controlled Appliances

Some manufacturers already offer machines that can be connected to a smart phone or computer through an app. Most of the functionality revolves around notifications of when cycles are done and being able to check on progress, but I'm sure it will go further as it becomes more of a standard, which we all know will happen in this social tech world we live in. I used to be totally against the idea because it seemed to be a crutch for lazy people to be even lazier, until I started thinking: What if I could see technical info while the machine is running? Such as what components are active currently, or the exact RPM reading during the spin, and even something similar to the instant MPG meter in newer cars where it will estimate the estimated energy use. And if I could lock out my appliances with a passcode to prevent use by any untrustworthy housemate? I'd be ecstatic.
