1974.  The end of the rotorack series--has hot/cool dry rocker switch to the right of  the timer.

That was our dishwasher when I was a kid. We bought it slightly used from a neighbor who was moving. Ours had a dark laminate top, not wood, though.

How loud or quiet is this unit? Any comparisons come to mind that are familiar brands and models? As a guess, I am thinking it's not loud, but more in the middle of the db level ratings. I don't know. Just guessing.

Average D&M

Par for the course with anything else of the spray-arm ilk in that era--hard to compare except to another D&M.  Mine were quieter than turbine-pump GEs.  Much quieter than our Thermador.  A little louder than a KitchenAid.  Meh.

In the middle sounds about right.  The drain segment was the louder portion on these.  The drain impeller developed this fascinating, howling cavitation, reminiscent in uniqueness and repetition of the belt-drive Whirlpool/Kenmore "woo-woo-woo" noise.  The motor resonated.

I tend to love the sounds of dishwashers. They all have a unique sound and I don't have the repertoire of sound-experiences with dishwashers that you, Nate, and others would have. But your description there reminds me how each one is different, cycles each having their own clunks, whirring, woo-woo, or whatever you can call the noises...it's as much fun to hear the sounds as it is to see what's going on(which doesn't happen most of the time unless you retrofitted a window, lucky you).

Thanks for weigh-in, Nate, on that.

The D&M  machines had a powerful drain pump and used a fair amount of water.  Cautious people with portable machines took the strainer/basket completely out of the sink when these machines were washing.  Once in a blue moon the force of the water would engage the stopper.  It seldom happened a second time.

What Rotates the actual ROTO-RACK in a R-R Dishwasher?

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture

Would this dishwasher be one from the era that today's P.O.D. (2/8/2016) is from? I've done a search on Roto-Rack dishwashers and this seems to have been the closest Thread to ponder whether the force of the wash/rinse water actually moves the rack;

I'm sure that the question has been asked/answered before...(How Does the Round Rack Move?)

Today's POD is from like 1968 or 1969.  The model in this thread is from like 1974 early 1975 at the end of the rotorack line due to its hot/cool dry rocker switch to the right of the timer dial.

Dave, they had the same D&M plumbing as the later 2 square rack machines. The sprayer was fixed to the back wall extended maybe a 1/3 of the roto rack and the jets were angled to wash and spin the rack, most of them would spin the top rack at a pretty good clip, sometimes varied between different machines.
