Zanussi WJD1665w washer dryer for me. Great at washing, rinsing and drying and had the famous spin rinses. And was quiet too.

Best old Washer has been a Maytag center dial with an helical transmission.

Best new Washer for me is Speed Queen.

Belt Driven Whirlpools and uni-matics follow close behind.

Hoover Nextra hands down...

haxisfan's profile picture
Although I retired my Hoover Nextra just a few weeks ago... it's been the best washer I've used in my life thanks to its savoir-faire in all possible laundry situations, its reliability and long lasting despite the exasperate use over the last 11 years (in fact it's still entirely original and doesn't know the meaning of the word engineer). I carried out all possible and impossible tests on it... by creating extreme conditions by overloading, underloading, awkward loads, using detergent hyper-doses (I even used high sudsing twin-tub detergent in it and it managed to clear it all up with no mess and no fuss, yet delivering fab washing and rinsing results), and it he always came up smelling of roses!

I'm OK with newer Hoovers but I'm not as impressed. I tried a few other front load washers, old and new, at home and elsewhere, and I found they aren't nearly as able as the the Hoover Nextra that seem to have a tendency of to tick all boxes everytime... first time :)

Best performing washer I've used would hands down be a classic belt drive Maytag top loader.

Though, our early 2000s direct drive Whirlpool has been an admirable performer with absolutely no problems and service calls. (No problems except how damn easy it is to throw the thing off balance with a load the Maytag can handle without batting an eye!)

1994 Maytag Dependable Care Plus

My 1994 Maytag Dependable Care Plus was my best and favorite! I loved the white porcelain tub, it worked very well, quiet, and I liked the orbital transmission. I also thought the console was very attractive. I had to move temporarily and everything was put into storage, and when the washer returned, there was a big gash and dent in the front panel which made me suspect that it might have been dropped. Perhaps if not for that, it would be running today.

My new front loader

The WFW72HEDW, since we bought it, its gotten everything clean that we threw at it even our king size comforter. Cleaning is a day and night difference when compared to our old inglis direct drive which we had before our new front loader. Don't get me wrong, while we had the inglis, I thought it was the best cleaner and front loaders were nothing. After it died 14 years later, we moved on to a front loader to give it a try. Now, I want no other washer then a front loader only. Towels come out whiter WITHOUT bleach and the smell of the fabric softener stays as well. When this washer goes, i'll be sure to buy another front loader.

Miele W1203, about seven years old now, and the repairman has never been called. On the sanitize cycle, T shirts that had arm pit stains eventually came completely clean with Persil Universal powder.

Relatives give me stained cotton garments to run through this machine, and it almost always removes the stain. Whenever I put on a white Costco Kirkland T shirt, I am impressed with the whiteness!

My mom's 1992 Almond Maytag "Everything Machine", short of it being Standard Capacity vs. a Full-Sized 20#...!

Four Temperatures, (a Warm Wash/Warm Rinse was all it lacked) Infinite Water Level, Bleach/Fab. Softener Dispensers, and even a Timed Soak...

Only needed the inherent lack of Instructions under the lid... Died after a basement flood caused it to blow fuses--though I know it could have been fixed or saved...!

Maytag. Bought in 1977 and traded for a new Speed Queen two weeks ago. Lasted 38 years. Still working, abet a bit noisy.

The Speed Queen is an excellent washer and we are expecting at least 35+ years from it. (Unfortunately, we are not expecting 35+ years for ourselves, so it will be interesting to see who finally ends up with it).

Back in 1980 a friend gave me her Westinghouse front loader, its been so long now that all I remember was it was a Westinghouse and was a fl..I don't even know how old it was when she gave it to me but I loved that machine, about a year later we were moving and since no rain in the forecast hubs loaded it on the truck the night before, when we woke next morning it was gone, apparently someone seen it in the truck parked in the driveway and helped themselves. No one seen or heard anything. And it was a nice quiet neighborhood. I cried for a long time after that loss lol. But after using my new Speed Queen the past 4 days I have to say Speed Queen, everyday it just seems to get better lol.

The best washer that I ever owned was also a Westinghouse FL, actually a White-Westinghouse. We purchased it new with the matching gas dryer in Aug. 1987 from Tee-Vax in Santa Rosa, Calif. for $995.00. They were almond, the popular color at the time. We had them stacked in a closet. The washer had a weigh to save door. That washer took on any load that I gave it and never skipped a beat. The same kingsize down comforter that we still have use to be washed regularlly in this FL and it always came out beautifully. We used this washer and dryer for 7 years with zero problems and sold them with the home and the new owners also got several more years of trouble free service from them. At the time CR gave them low review scores and I know many on this site don't think highly of the White-Westinghouse machines, but I sure loved that washer and I hated to leave it behind when we sold the house.

A Tie

Can't decide on one?

1-18 - Thumper - because it handles large loads; rinses well; superior cleaning/rinsing

Speed Queen - new topload - quality construction; reminds me of the early Maytags

Maytag 806 - Center Dial - albeit less capacity, rugged durability, the sound is music to my ears - even the "scratch" with each movement of the timer - soothing

Love all 3 - always have at least 2 connected for Daily drivers.

Best washing ability:  Norgesque,  Magic Chef, best cleaning washer I ever owned.

Best I have now.   Maytag  LA  series, with "load sensor".

Awful  I have now:  WP made Admiral  that washes well enough but provides only a few inches of rinse water.  I have learned to live with it by running PP a second time.

The one we have now, a Electronic Whirlpool TL DD set (LA9800TX1) It's had two sets of agitator dogs and a spin clutch in 23 years of operation. The dryer hasn't had anything done to it except for periodic cleanings. Still has the original belt and drum light from 23 years ago.

Guess the best I have used-or owned-McGraw Edison SQ washers at an apartment laudramat,BD WP machines that replaced the SQ,And at home ANY BD-KN,WP machine.Used to have DD KN-HATED the thing-was a real clothes chopper.Traded it at the swap shop for a WP IMP90 BD.Sadly that machine now leaks-just haven't gotten the time to try to fix it.If I have to buy new-SQ TL it will be.Otherwise see what the swap shops have.

I have to agree with Rich, the LG 3570 is by far the best washer that I have ever used. Better than the SQ top loader that came before it. This washer cleans well and performance is top notch. And so far no issues with the washer and the equally impressive LG 3570 dryer. This washer and dryer have reduced my utility bills drastically, water bill especially was impressive by $90 for the quarter. The SQ washer is very primitive by comparison. Not to mention a water hog, and extraction was lacking compared to the LG washer. That alone has made the dryer fly thru loads of laundry.
And an added bonus, my clothes are lasting longer and don't look like they have been beaten to death. I know some on here will gasp at what I am saying about the beloved SQ top loader but that's what I have experienced with that machine. Replace a belt on that washer and you will not be so thrilled...it's no Maytag Newton built washer that's for sure.

Best washing machine i've own LG F1495KD, still going, i love the way it washes the clothes, 10/10 results all the time.

Worst washing machine i ever own, was a hotpoint aqualtis 9kg it used to rip the clothes in in the spin cycle due to the design of the rubber gasket, wash times where extremely long, poor rinsing, i could never buy another hotpoint, i rather pay more for the top of the line LG or a Miele.

When I posted my original choice of the best washer I have owned I was thinking more on the lines of washers I owned in the past. But I would be remiss if I neglected to mention my current washer, an LG 3170. It probably is the very best washer I have ever owned. I have never had whiter whites, the savings in electricity are sizable, about $20.00 per mo. less per mo. This is due to less hot water being needed and the incredibly fast spin speeds that cut drying time in half at least, The flexibility of cycles, while not as great as some higher priced models, is never the less more than adequete. I have programmed my favorite cycle and with the press just a button I'm ready to wash most loads. Also, I am using way less detergent than I did with my GE TL. After 3 mo. of use I can honestly say that I'm very happy with this LG and its companion dryer.

I have to say

my Kenmore Elite. It's a rebranded lg pair. Clothes come out clean and rinsed in the washer and come out dry in the dryer. I love the water jets, both laundry detergent and additive mixed and freshwater alike. I always use fabric softener for every load and bleach for every white load and the pump circulates during accelawash which I use all the time. I don't need to use high heat in the dryer for most loads. I just use normal with medium heat and it all flows through nicely.

In 50 years my family had 2 GE Filter Flo washers, a 1967 and a 1989. Never even changed as much as a belt on either one. They had the coolest sounding timers when you turned them to set the wash cycle. I really miss them.

The 1974 Maytag A407 I bought for $50.00 7 years ago. It was already run to death then with well water stained spin basket with a few drain holes starting to rust open, tub bearing clunking, original belts squeaking. I wash 6 loads of clothes every week with it. I replaced the belts as soon as I got it, timer with a used one a few years ago, water injector and fill tube last year and thats it so far. Tub bearing still clunking. Gathering up parts to do a one day overhaul of it, just need to find a good clean trans to service with synthetic oil, and a clean spin basket. Ive got a near perfect HA806 for back up but I dont think Ill ever need it the way this thing keeps going.

I can't pick just one because all of the machines either my family or I owned were all good except the X design Maytag Bravos. Even the Amana I have now is a really good performing washer.

I think though overall the ones I remember well and used when I was old enough was our early 70s Fedders Norge and the much later 2003 Kenmore DD 90 series.

Overall the nod goes to the Kenmore 90. That washer had 7 temp combos and seperate speed switch and infinite variable water levels and an extra rinse option.

Was a great rinser with that ultra rinse system. Two 15 second sprays in each spin.

Bosch Axxis from early 2000’s it was a great performer and rinsed pretty well. I have never had sweaty work shirts come out so clean wash after wash.

Miele 4842 is getting up there in cleaning power, as I currently have a 4370 LG.
If I have a big load of towels the Miele will outperform the LG balancing and spinning out the load.

My Miele Wi Washer and T1 Dryer

chachp's profile picture

I, too, had an Axxis+ set from the early 2000s.  I thought that was the best one I ever had until now.  The dryer was a little on the noisy side but did a good job.  I have to say this Miele set we bought about a year ago is the best we've had.  What I loved about the Bosch was the heated soak cycle (among other things).  But I always hated the fact that after the soak I had to restart the machine with whatever cycle I was using.  With the Miele, it goes from the soak directly to the wash.  I really wanted to hate the TwinDos system because I thought it was a gimmick.  But now that I have had an opportunity to test other detergents against the TwinDos I have to say the combination does an amazing job.  I stock up when there is a sale on the Miele site to keep the cost down a little bit.

I will admit I was a little concerned about using a heat pump dryer because some on this site made it sound like I would wait hours and hours for a load to dry.  That hasn't been my experience at all.  The only thing that I couldn't fit into the washer was our king sized down comforter.  I found a set that is two twin size comforters that button down the middle to make a king.  Problem solved.

This time around I wanted a set that would fit under counter and I love the fact that I don't have to worry about venting the dryer when we redo our laundry room.

This beautiful direct drive beast from 96. Still runs like new and very quick, no bullshit & a true classic that still offers a very giving selection of cycles. I grew up with mostly direct drives, a early 90s Roper and then the very last model of the direct drive which was just a more basic end Whirlpool with the dual action agitator.

I’ve never once found something this machine cannot clean, in less than an hour on any cycle.

Favorite?

Probably the Duet. Lots of character, quirky, German built, and would do tap hot washes.
Though, the Kenmore LG built FL is better at balancing, spinning, and rinsing.

1980 Maytag

Out of all of the washers that I have owned I chose the 1980 Maytag. Very smooth washing action. I did buy it new and had to give it up when I sold the house two years later, the new owners wanted it. I have had many Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drives, and a 2000 Maytag orbital. The orbital was nice, bought it new, but the seal failed after 5 years and the agitator shaft pulled out at 17 years. Now I have the 2017 Speed Queen. I do like it quite a bit and probably will never buy another washer. Too bad the basic design keeps the tub off center when agitating. The Maytags never had this problem because of the on center belt design. I have also had GE FF that were fun but basic design is even more of a water user than my SQ.

1993 GE filter-flo

I am choosing the 1993 GE filter-flo set. It would wash anything thrown at it, from delicate lingerie to smelly cottons and denims covered in dirt. It had the ramped activator, minibasket and filter pan. My mom washed a jacket on the normal speed and small water level when I came come with it dirty. The sounds it made were very cool from the start of normal speed agitation to the clunking suspension on spin.

My Whirlpool Duet WFW97hex I've owned for 10 years this coming December. Outstanding cleaning better than any top loader or front loader I've ever owned, my fabrics aren't beat to death like a DD washer, and I have multiple options for hot water ranging from 125 to 153 degrees F.

Funny. I've had both top and front loader and I didn't notice ANY discernible difference of the "superiority" of front load washing and I had one with "on board heating"

For the kind of clothes I get truly dirty I find an agitator washer that uses plenty of water if I so CHOOSE to get my skanky work clothes nice and clean.

Oh there is always the slower motor speed us knuckle dragging neanderthal Americans thought to program into our machines also.

@Chachp:

Will you give me your dosing amounts for Miele Phase 1 and Phase 2 detergents? I'm just curious to see what others use.

Probably a GE Filter-Flo with ramped activator. Cleaned well and didn’t wear the clothes out. Rinsed well.

For me and my late husband, I'd have to say it was our 1976 Frigidaire 1-18. The matching dryer was a bit slow, but did its job for years with only a couple of minor repairs.

I'll go with the early 1980's GE Filter Flo. Up to that point we had nothing but Kenmores. We went with GE in the 80's because my employer had an appliance purchase program and I got a great deal on one. Since I was paying I had to inform my mother that Kenmore was off the table - she kicked and screamed a little, and the fact that my father could fix Kenmores easily was no longer relevant as he died a few years earlier and I had no mechanical ability whatsoever. I might have considered Frigidaire but by that time they were a White Consolidated brand so no dice there. Anyway, that GE machine handled everything easily (and we all loved the mini basket); also, no repairs for 17 years. I then gave it to a friend since I was remodeling (very stupid on my part). The only "repair" was when my sister decided to change the speed setting while the machine was washing. I don't count that as a repair as this was a "self inflicted" gunshot wound.

I think I will have to say that the Siemens washing machine I have now is the best one so far. I love all the older stuff, but this is just a good washing machine. Very flexible, lots of programmes and options, it washes very clean and it uses enough water. If the default settings are not enough, you can add up to three rinses, to a max of 6 rinses I believe (haven't counted). It's not very loud, sounds are not annoying. I bought it with a matching dryer, the price was very reasonable.
