It was bound to happen, sooner or later I was going to find an Avanti. This little fellow was waiting for me down in the basement. Now I've heard some horror stories about Avanti's, but you know me, always a sucker for a lost cause. One thing I found interesting, it was manufactured 15 years ago. That's pretty good in my book. Still has fresh water in it, so it was used until recently. I'll try it out later this evening. Stay tuned.

Does anyone know how to defeat the lid switch?

Hey thanks CFZ. I would had been far more leery if it was made in China.

Well it went through an entire cycle. It worked flawlessly, right down to the end of cycle tune. All it needs is a good cleaning and it's ready for service.

Congratulations on your new purchase. It looks a lot like my LG Turbodrum. I bet it was made in the same factory, my machine was made in Korea too. My guess is yours is an older version, mine has the stainless steel drum and three little pulsators. Look at the pictures in this thread.

Thanks Louis, but I didn't purchase it. It was free. Found it next to the trash. And indeed, your washer does look similar. But I think being LG, the quality should be better than Avanti.

I started removing some parts in order to clean it. Looks almost toy like.

The lint filter was absolutely clogged, it consisted of gravel/sand, lint and some sticky residue.  Took a lot of scrubbing to get it cleaned.

Later today I'm going to run a hot water and Clorox cycle to disinfect it. Then I'll try it with clothes.

I have a smaller RCA version of this. I LOVE it. I use it for smaller loads and single items that need washing. It's right next to my bathroom sink so very easy to use. I don't understand why normal size machines don't have lint filters. I empty the filter in my RCA after use and there's a lot of lint in there. Would be very useful in a larger machine I would think.

Larger machines used to have lint filters, but manufacturers in their never ending quest to cheapen the product, eliminated them. Supposedly, the lint was going to be removed by the dryer.

Doing the disinfecting cycle now. I'm just floored on how nicely it works. I figured out how to disengage the lid switch. Piece of cake. Now you can see the splashy action. More pic's to follow.

Very cool find!

Is that lint filter designed to be cleaned by the user, presumably with each use?

Maybe it was thrown out for the same reason Maytags were: The owner didn't know to clean the filter?

Jim

Thanks Jim. The filter is designed to be cleaned by the user. I suppose the prior owners just didn't care. Every washer and dryer I have ever found have really dirty filters.

a must have!......they are very interesting machines....those controls are more variable than you think.....compact enough to fit on the back seat of your SUV...

heres a link for the instruction manual.......this will help you set the controls for added times or options.....

Hey thanks a lot Martin! I was looking for a manual online, but no dice. I really do like this machine. The only think I don't care about are the very long cycles. "Speedy" is 25 minutes!

I still can't figure out the lid switch on mine. It has a glass cover but I'd still like to run it with the lid open so I can do some videos!

each one is a bit different, but usually there are 2 to 4 screws that have to be removed from that rear top panel.....

on mine, I had to open the lid, and with a tiny screwdriver, reach through and pry the two tabs next to the lid hinges, and then that whole panel lifted off.....you can either cut and twist the wires together, or drill a small hole in the back and install a switch spliced between the wires, which is what I did....

it doesn't have to know the lid was raised as in some machines to reset the controls for each cycle, but if it goes out of balance and triggers the alarm, then this switch comes in handy...sensing the lid has been opened resets the out-of-balance buzzer and lets the machine resume its cycle...

interesting how they changed models.....Louie's has only two waterfall ports, one for the water fall and the other for the filter....

is this one a 1.7 cu ft size?......and wonder if these did the 850 rpm spin also...

Mine has a small lever, right behind the lid, on the right. I inserted a small "L" bracket to keep the lever in the raised position. I have no idea what size or RPM it has.

And now for some splashy fun. I had to put a towel to the side of the washer to soak up the spray from the spin.

very cool Louie, thanks for the vids.....there doesn't seem to be many on youtube

found the operation a bit odd or different than mine, I would reduce that water level a bit to just under the balance ring so the waterfall can spray over the load....odd that it started to agitate and still fill....

I was wondering about the spin sprays, yours are automatic, on mine I can delete/add up to two spin sprays, and two deep rinses.....or any combination....or even cancel them out...as years went on, they added better flexible programming.....the newer ones allow for an 'Air Dry' option of a long extended spin...

what is your take on the size of load, and how well it handles it Louie?...

I always say if your going to have one vintage set, you should have one of these as a backup just in case......handles a decent size load, yet small enough to tuck just about anywhere...

It can be programed Martin, I have tried the double rinse and you can delete certain actions. As far as loads go, it has handled them well, no tangling. Everything comes out clean. It's also the quietest machine I've had so far. Like I said, I'd LOVE to keep it, but too much stuff piling up.

Great videos, nice to see the whole cycle. It's a nice machine, a pity you don't have enough space for it. It's a common problem here. ;-)

Thanks Louis. I just have way too many appliances. 2 Refrigerator/freezers, 1 floor freezer, 2 stoves, 2 dryers, 3 washers. And not to mention over 10 boxes of vintage Christmas decorations I scored (don't ask, :) ),  2 large aquariums....whew! And way, way too many tools. Until I build that laundry closet, I just can't take any more stuff.

They really are great machines, I love mine. Only thing I don't like is the way it washes causes clothes to get all tangled up. But not a big deal. Mine is really loud during spin too. I'll take a look at the lid switch on my days off!

That is a fun wash, the splashing filter makes it more so. I had a 1 cu. ft. Haier for a while and there was no spray rinse, more splashy fun for you.

Does the filter catch much?

You're welcome Gan. And yes, the filter does catch quite a bit.

I haven't had any issues with tangling yet, but that seems to be a normal occurrence with impeller machines.

I got a chance to see a most similar model Avanti recently. A number of things about it impressed me:

- It probably has the highest ratio of wash capacity to volume of machine I've ever seen. It was almost like the Tardis; bigger inside than outside.
- You could set the machine to do what you wanted it to do.
- The sounds it made were all those of well-built, smoothly operating machinery, very pleasant to listen to.
- It's light and easy to carry/move.

An Avanti is def something I'll keep in the back of my mind for the future.

Thanks for the great vids.

Jim
