My dryer is no longer drying. It gives off a little tiny bit of heat in the drum but the back is getting pretty hot. My husband doesn't want to try to fix it and says I need to look for a new one. I have a Speed Queen washer but am NOT interested in getting the matching dryer. I just need something that dries. Any suggestions for one? We are retired folks so no need for anything fancy.

If the back is getting hot sounds like the vent may be clogged with lint and needs to be cleaned. This could cause a fire if in fact the vent is clogged. Clearly the element is heating if the back is getting hot.

You don't need a new dryer, you need to find and clear the lint clog in your exhaust ducting.

A friend of ours has her dryer in the garage. She had a similar problem. Her husband fixed it by using a leaf blower up the stack through the roof. A few moments after he started it looked like it was snowing outside! There was a LOT of lint in that dryer and vent! It's also a fire hazard too!

We use our chimney sweep to clean ours out.

I agree...check your venting!

You definitely need to check to see if the exhaust vent to the dryer is clogged as well as the lint screen itself. If the dryer is heating up and getting hot the way that it should but is not able to exhaust the heat by circulating air thru the dryer you could possibly have yourself a dryer fire. That's the last thing you want to happen.

Thanks. I will have him check and make sure there is no lint stopping the vent up.

Yes as others suggested you may have a clogged vent, best way to test is to pull the exhaust hose off the dryer and dry a few loads, if the dryer works great you instantly know you have a vent system problem.

A new SQ dryer is a very practical and low cost way to get a very reliable dryer, and if you have natural gas in your home consider switching to a gas dryer, running a NGD does only about 1/3 the damage to the environment that running an electric dryer does.

you can always choose a basic dryer like this one.....in fact on sale right now....

but as mentioned, if the vent line is clogged or lined with lint, a new dryer wont make a difference....

agree, if you have NG, a few more dollars to purchase, but you will see big savings on your electric bill.....more than paying for the extra expense...

If you do find that the vent was blocked with lint, there is a great probability that the blower might be clogged also. Have found this to happen also. Might be time for a complete cleanout.
