Over the last week I've been staying in a cabin as my partner and I visit his family, and there's a newly installed GE Spacemaker stackable topload washer/dryer. Our host has done a few loads and I've listened very carefully to the phases of the cycle.

it sounds like a direct drive agitation, and apparently automatically determines the water level. One on load, it sounded like after several minutes of agitation, it injected more water and agitated further. In all cases, after the drain and spin from the washer, I hear water being injected, and a bunch of motor pulses...I'd love to watch, but of course cannot as a guest! I suspect it's the tub nudging around as water injects. It never really fills, but eventually goes to a slow spin as it injects. It then sounds like it drains, and starts the process again, and after a few minutes does a full spin, and that's it!

Does anyone here have experience with these new top loaders that don't do a full fill for the rinse? I know this one has the fabric softener option which I think will do a full fill for the rinse...but I'm wondering just how well the standard rinse works.

What you may be hearing is the spray rinse that saves on water by slowly revolving the wah basket as,it sprays cold water directly on to the load. My LG WT1101CW has that feature. If you prefer a deep  rinse on mine, you select Fabric Softner option and it then fills and gives a deeper water level. However, on mine, even the spray rinse is very efficient in removing detergent and residue grime until the rinse water pumping out is crystal clear. On the model you're speaking about, if it's the one made for GE and full size that Ive looked at,it has a Frigiscare Washer with a GE dryer screwed on top.

Newer GE TL Stack Washer-Dryers [ both 24" and 27" w

These are GE-? [ I think the washer is partly LG ] designs they have nothing to do with Frigidaire any longer. They are not holding up well at all, major problem are main seals in the washer and failed bearings, I had to condemn another [ 27" gas unit ] on Monday that was only around 3 years old for this problem [ repair estimate nearly $900 ]. On Sunday I was at an independent repair place that rebuilds and services washers and dryers and he had three of these machines lined up that were all being junked for this problem.

The washers in these machines are a belt drive design, from what I can see they perform pretty well, but I wouldn't buy one on a bet. Whirlpool is still making their DD 24" and 27" stack machines in both gas and electric and these are much better choices.
