We are a rather unique group, passionate and opinionated about subjects (appliances/laundry/laundry products) the general population rarely gives a second thought.

So, which qualities/behaviors/thought processes/quirks/obsessions epitomize AW enthusiasts?

I'll start:

"You know you're a member of AW when you purposely stain a bunch of flour sack dish towels with a dozen different stains to test detergents."

find youself "recklessly" dirty-ing extra bowls, pans, dishes and utensils because you can't wait to hear the roar of your vintage dishwasher.  That's of course after you decide which one you'll use that day.

Or even worse, when you just run it empty because you can't wait.

When you just woke up from a dream and realize you don't have a KitchenAid KDS-17 or 18 in your kitchen... Or when you eagerly count the days until it's "the big" laundry day again, then wash every possible thing in the house dirty or clean and watch the washer through every cycle.

when your landlord...

...asks you: "So why would a single person need 5 washers? Isn't that 4 too many?" (happened here last month) and, not even thinking about it, you hear yourself answering: "Nope, that is 4 x 4 too few of them".

Or when a friend comes up and says: "Hey soap wizard, I got under my truck, My hands are ok, but what can you do about that stained sweater?"

Or when your brother in law calls you from 300 km away and says: "Got that weekly leaflet of xyz market here. Three models here, priced almost identically, which one?"

You have several different laundry detergents in your laundry room.

...

When you're in a laundromat and just can't stop slamming your head against the wall.

When you just know 3 rinses aren't enough.

When you know what the washer will do - before IT SELF does.

When you take 15 minutes thinking about a better arrangement of the dishes in a DW.

When you look at a washer in a store and the sales person comes up, asking "Can I help you?" and you just want to say "I think with me it rather should be the other way around!"

When you just can't go without the smell of laundry right from the dryer.

When you know basicly any washer on the market.

And, finaly, if you are proud to have AW.org as shortcut in your browser.

1. You are excited for a trip to the laundromat.
2. You can't walk through a Sears, Best Buy or Menard's without looking @ the appliances.
3. You had a MAJOR crush on the Ecolab rep who services your work's dishmachine. (HOLY S#!T could she make a lab coat look sexy.)
4. When you check in to a hotel the first thing you want to find out is what type of washer-extractors they have and do they use Ecolab.
5. When eating in a restaurant you try to find out what kind of dishmachine they have.
6. You have an appliance store looking for old machines for you.

I am guilty of all of these. Nice thread!

1. You remember more about your grandmother's washers than your mother does.
2. You've picked out washers and dryers for multiple scenarios for your new condo.... and the building hasn't changed its rules and you haven't bought the condo yet.
3. You see videos of people using unauthorised agitator attachments and you find yourself more concerned with washer make/model, spin speed, stability, etc. than you are with any action that might be going on.

Always checking in to see what's up with fellow members.

I like it here. And, so far, I like all the members even when I don't see eye to eye on a certain opinion or ideas, I still respect them.

You also know your an AW member when you can remember distinctly the smell of certain soaps and detergents when you were a kid, and for me that's going back to the early 60's. Awww, wisdom and experience.

Not to mention Vintage Small Appliances as well of course.

Great Thread, Frig!

My contenders

When you check back at AW.org at least twice every hour when you're bored (including forums you don't frequent, or topics you avoid with a 10ft pole)

You start reading obscurely-titled threads you never thought could be interesting, that are actually chock full of opinions.

As soon as someone starts clearing the table, you make a b-line for the kitchen to make doubly-sure they don't start pre-rinsing. If they do, you lecture them. The same goes for cold-water laundering.

You know your a member of AW.org when:

- You say to your partner on a Saturday morning "I can't be bothered doing anything today I just want to sit and relax" but you end up doing 3 loads of laundry AND ironing it because thats how you 'relax'.

- You make excuses when you visit other peoples homes to visit the bathroom in the blind hope that it might be near the laundry room so you can run in and judge them based on what machine they have, what settings its on AND what detergent they use.

-Part of A 'fun day out' means trawling through whitegoods stores and wishing you had the the space for more more MORE!

- Your friends now just let you do their laundry when you go and visit them and actually consider it a bit strange if you DON"T do at least one load for them while your there.

-You have a stash of laundry detergent from varying continents and eras that is so big you would not actually NEED to buy any until approximately 2020.

There's plenty more but thats about the basics for me lol

You see discarded appliances on your drives that you irk your fellow-passenger/passengers to see...

You wish that the appliance WOULD have the DOOR or LID LEFT ON so you can at least see the brand! (I know, the door or lid need to be taken off, for the assurance that nothing or no one gets trapped inside...)

When you don't mind that your husband does races like Warrior Dash and Tough Mudder because it's a chance to use all the special cycles on your washer and the drying rack in the dryer.

(For the record, LG FL, Gentle, warm wash, Heavy dirt, pre-wash with Wisk, main wash with Tide powder and Biz. And then turn everything inside out for a gentle cycle wash, normal dirt, with Wisk to get rid of any remaining grit.)

Yesterday I was on my way to work with one of my employees. There was a pick up truck in front of us at a red light.  There was a washer in the back of the truck on it's laying on it's back and you could see the pulleys on the bottom of the Base Pan.  I said to my friend " That's a Maytag washer in the back of that truck" He asked how I knew... I told him Only Maytag has the pulleys on the bottom of the base pan."  He looked at me weird and said "Oh, I'll remember that the next time I see a washer on it's back".

You set the dishwasher for a delay start for a time while you & your family were gone just to see the door propped open & the "Start" light flashing and the time remaining before it starts being hours ago--and just give hell to the person responsible hell--my wife, in this case--for opening the door to put "one more thing in it"--silverware, to be exact--though a bowl she used it for is still sitting on the counter, indicating there was no room for it, but should suggest even to any simpleton that the dishwasher WILL go on to wash what there IS inside it that DOES fit--and you've gone through this with this individual, over and over again! As this has happened in the past...--Well, now getting to be a very long story...

But in short: I like the machine to go while we're away, in this case visiting the father-in-law, who's residing in a nursing home, having dinner w/ the mother-in-law at her place, and then coming home to the dishes, pots, pats, silverware, kitchenware, glasses, cups, utensils, etc. nice & dry-and HOT, too!--and mostly THAT is the case, when this frggin' thing, that I routinely set up, GOES RIGHT!!!!

You damn yourself for not peeking in the back of the hair salon where the washer & dryer for washing the linen are, (hey, there's a dryer vent, often blowing heat stickin' outta that part o' the buildin'!) though you have the perfect opportunity while the stylist is waiting on the last customer before you get waited on, and then promise you'll try to the next time you go in...

Trouble is, I'm still trying to get my hair to grow real long (guys, when are we going to have a HAIR THREAD??--that stuff isn't just for girls, you know!) and I just go in every month/every two-months for a trim & recently switched to the salon that's at my work; the person I usually go to who operates her business from her home might soon be retiring... And I'm up on the stuff at her housed--the washer & dryer she does her own laundry in, but--Damn!--when she had a place she had her hair business in, that had a washer & dryer in the basement that I never got to see...

A True Story, Seaway Hosp. More than 30-Years-Ago:

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture

Your grandpa is in the hospital, you go there w/ your grandmother & li'l sister and then want to see the hospital's kitchen & laundry, dragging those two with you to peek through whatever doors & windows you can look through--yeh, the room where the dirty laundry gets sorted was DISGUSTING!!!!--to get a glimpse at the APPLIANCES they use!

(And unfortunately, the Three Musketeers candy from the cafeteria vending machine had a "hospital food flavor", while the red pop (Strawberry?, Cherry?) that my sis & I got, also had a very disagreeable, "Throw it all away!" taste...)

Grandpa luckily got better...

Some of your favorite Saved Searches on Ebay are for decades old appliances, and those searches have been focused, to find just the right items to meet your specific needs...... and checking your search can be rated as one of lifes great pleasures.

When you not only buy appliances you find on line, you worry about their safe arrival. You wonder: 'should I have contacted the seller and asked them to double package?' .... just in case.

You make a video of unpacking appliances and/or showing them in operation, not so much as a How-to video, but more like the pics taken of a child at a graduation ceremony, then post it for the world to see what an appliance loving freak you are proud to be.

You're away from home, you realize your membership has run out, you have to remember your Pay Pal password so you can renew your membership on your iPad because you don't want to miss anything on AW.org and AW.org deserves your donation more than most sites or at least it ranks pretty high for me.

Some people that post in this forum have found it acceptable to be hyper-critical and occasionally down right rude to the point of causing apathy among other members. I know several members or former members that no longer post because a few that behave in this manner. It's sad when a very small number of members are so rude or lack the proper communication skills to participate in a forum that they ruin the free exchange of ideas and information. I considered not renewing my membership because of this behavior, but I love the site so much that I'm going to give it another try and hope that the the people causing dissent will tone it down a bit. I hope these members will realize who they are if they care anything at all about AW.

I know this is drifting way off topic but I feel like it might be a good place to comment. We owe our web masters, Robert and Fred a great deal of gratitude. Even though I haven't met them yet, I hope to some day. I've watched from afar via YouTube, AW and Vaccumland. Thank you for all you do.

Your so right, Brian. AW has come a long way since it started, thanks to Robert's, and other's hard work.

Anyone who's been a long term member of this group, or similar type 'collector' groups, recognizes that each member has an idealistic bank of memories that bring them pleasure. It's like we come together for the sake of saying "hey, remember when....... and didn't that make us feel great". And that's great.

IMHO, It seems that people who, like myself, are idealist, tend to be very intelligent, but sometimes the intelligence comes at the expense of personal skills or other life skills. One simply needs to understand that one persons idealistic views may not mesh with others, or there may be a generation gap. But respect for others views is universal.

I'm so grateful for the work of Robert and others who've put together this wonderful platform. I know it's helped me to appreciate my interests and to understand other people interests. I've learned so much about appliances and other interesting information. So many wonderful people here and so much information as a result.

You have more than one laundry room and still have appliances in storage.
You have more washers / dryers than you have loads of laundry per week.
You have more than 3 types of detergent, and use all of them.
You cook on your Chambers range and pitty the unfortunate souls who only have a Wolf or Viking.
Your refrigerator's referigerant is neither R12 nor R134a.
You know what refrigerant your refrigerator uses.
You have more than one dishwasher.
You have more than one dishwasher, and you use them!
You use appliances (plural!) with cloth cords.
You have replaced one appliance with an older model.
You yearn for features that used to exist, but are no longer on the market (foot pedals to open dryers and refrigerators!).
You believe washer and dryer consoles should always be lit.
You are in any way bothered by new appliances that last less than 7 years.
You know what a dryer sprinkler is.
You use a dryer sprinkler.
You won't use a washing machine unless you can clean its lint filter.

And finally:
You have the cleanest laundry of everyone you know!

One side of the Temperature Selector on your dryer's control panel is too far from the other, so you coordinate your loads so you don't have to go far from one Temperature to the other (Highest to Lowest, Lowest to Highest) eg.

DELICATE  LOW  MEDIUM HIGH

In other words, I go from Delicate to Medium, High to Low, Low to Medium or Vice-versa, in the above... (I can get this system to work, believe me, I've done it a life-long time since getting this dryer, before!)

You go through another extreme: "Appliance Siting"--STALKING, rather!

Yes, spied through a kitchen window in my in-laws' neighborhood, and on a wall, A DOUBLE-OVEN BLACK GLASS DOOR!  The four KNOBS were the first most-noticed...  Then the ANALOG timer w/ start-stop and the digital clock--a rotating kind, NOT any LED's...

And the brand, most-likely? (I didn't get THAT close, but could easily identify) a GENERAL ELECTRIC... (Not just GE!)

More on The Appliance Peeping Tom:

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture

Yes, the wall oven was seen at night, while just going out w/ some mail...

Another "through the window" to the extreme: The top of a Side by Side fridge that looked like it was in Coppertone, but I think turned to Stainless, or might'a been all along... I drove by a house where that somehow noticeably got seen...

I remember a newly-discovered hallway at my high school housing the big home economics dept. (which I wish I had taken!) that had a gallery of Westinghouse electric ranges, a stacked White-Westinghouse washer & dryer, and a built-in cook top & double wall oven, also Westy's the teacher used...  This was the '80's, but all were still-working '70's, including the one, or two Westinghouse fridge/fridges, seen through the long window, along the hallway I had just not til that moment, that day, ever trod...!

The middle school I had attended had two Home Ec rooms, three counting an un-used one, still housing a single oven Frigidaire wall oven & pushbutton GE cook-top, and peeking in the working class rooms saw, in addition to the usual Westinghouse stock had Caloric gas ranges--plain ones that only had Self-Clean...! (Later, I worked for the school library & got to make rounds going to classrooms, in MS & HS, so I got to go into the former, but not the latter--there went to other non-HE rooms via that corridor...)

You can equate Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry", about TV news reporting from an Anchorman's point-of-view, in a world of media sensationalism and yellow journalism (I remember hearing that song for the first time) with what that song sounds like in the literal term (and likening those sound effects to laundry equipment!) as in dirty clothes--and of course, stuff "aired in public", another literal term, hence the name of one of Forums here at AW...!

When you try to sell a replacement plan for a blender (after the person buying it just made you reduce the price to "what he saw it marked for in the aisle") just for him to turn it down, then almost dropping it in his shopping cart yells out "Osters are JUNK, unless it's my '73!" (just randomly gave out a "Harvest Gold-EN Year")...

Since this was one of the new R2D2-looking droids, as opposed to it being my last-"decently-built" machines from 2007--Red & All--from the last good era for it to be still going strong...  Whereas this new Two-Thousand-Fifteen, one WILL need that replacement plan before even ONE of the proposed two years (for a MODEST amount, mind you!) passes...

You get brave enough at the hair salon to try to peek through the door to the back room (still shuttered) to make out a bank of white appliances meaning a washer & dryer for laundering towels, smocks etc.--hey, there is a dryer vent sticking out of the wall at the front of the store I work at! Just not enough steam coming out of it to make it look like a fire...! LOL...

You're warned NOT to be peering in through the door at that neat, same FORTY-INCH FRIGIDAIRE electric stove, when, years before, my sister & I (chaperoned by an "older person" going to the door with us, warning me "what could happen") were going trick or treating on Halloween & some old man lived there (who didn't seem to want to be pulled away from his card game with his buddies, yet had his porch light on, passing out candy anyway!)

Yet, you're lucky enough, years later, to have a paper route & get to peek into that same kitchen, through that same front door, of that same house, of one customer who moves into there & see the same 40" Frigidaire electric range, while conversing about how she used to "fling newspapers & sling burgers" as I was doing...

You had your head buried in your local newspapers' classified ads & even regularly bought classified ad publications such as AUTO SWAP and TRADIN' TIMES, even if you'd never bought any of the actual appliances, vans, trucks, automobiles for sale, but were there to look (& perhaps browse through the latter's Personal Ads) and loved what you saw that years later you see & learn more about here...! You worry you'll damage your washer if you change the speed while it's running (you would if it's an Olde Tyme GE Filter Flo) so you turn it off (I don't know WHY I had mine washing on Delicate/Extra Slow (with a Slow Spin), almost the entire length of MY clothes in the machine before I realized I forgot to turn the knob to Regular/Slow (with a Fast Spin) after I was washing my daughter's clothes; at least I'd changed the Temperature while it was filling (Warm/Cold to Cold/Cold)...)

You remember a commercial for a radio station showing a man washing the dishes to Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" (Hey, it's the 35th Anniversary of The Boss's THE RIVER album!) and the light fixtures over the sink & the main area of the kitchen look like the exact same globes in mom & dad's (right down to my dad being the one who did--and still DOES!--EVERY dish, pan, pot, tableware, utensil, cup, glass, bowl, etc. BY HAND!!!! (Also looked like the actor (an African American guy, actually) even liked the song to do it on the radio spot, and maybe enjoyed doing the dishes in the wee hours, as seemed to be depicted, which was when my dad did 'em, too...)

You remember back in the white Bradford dishwasher days your dad loading/unloading the dishwasher, filling it w/ the powdered detergent, hooking it up (it was a portable) turning it on, and all! (Though when it went kaput, it was washing everything by hand--HIS hands!)...

And your dad mixing the powdered milk (God knows why we had that stuff, that I don't really remember actually drinking--and thread idea: Powdered Milk: Does anyone still drink? What purpose does it serve?)

So you carry on tradition, being the family Dishmeister (I am charge of the frustration of getting everything in the D-W to fit!) and making the Kool Aid...! (WE are for PIMM'S! Pimm's BERRY Punch...)

Not to mention the tradition of living in our middle-class Detroit-suburbs (city of Oak Park, MI) that seems to hover over me, when in front of our house, shoveling snow...

You finagle your washer to do what you want for a given load.

I always use diagnostic mode on my Calypso to purge the hot supply line to insure the wash fill starts immediately at the target temp ... and I always choose a Hot fill with my tankless water heater set at the desired temperature.

Ran a huge load of grungy whites this morning, starting with a 95°F soak/prewash.  1.5 tbsp STPP, 4 tbsp Biz powder, 4 tbsp Fresh Start.  Stopped the cycle at end of the soak period, went into diagnostic mode to run 3 mins of nutation (diagnostic mode automatically exits after 3 mins).  Let it sit for 10-ish mins, then drain/spin at 400 RPM with a HOT (140°F) spray rinse to preheat the load.  Whitest Whites cycle at 140°F wash, 1.5 tbsp STPP, 4 tbsp Persil 2-in-1 liquid, and 1/2 cup LCB (timed dispenser releases at last ~3 mins of the wash period).

Or your first tour around the city is arrive at the hotel, throw the suitcase in a hurry and rush to the closest supermarket to see the detergent aisle.

Apple, Mango, Tango. Does anyone remember some years back when something named sunny lemon or something dishwashing detergent, samples were mailed to people in the U.S.?? I think some of this labeling is dangerous especially if you have small kids running about. Why was there such a flap about "Joe" Camel?

OK--that you actually LIKED the Joe Camel Cigarette Ads!

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture

Joe Camel, unfortunately was portrayed as making smoking look glamorous to kids...  He was claimed to have been as familiar to children as Fred Flintstone, and making him anthropomorphic did put him in a class with Tony the Tiger...

So the Camel mascot was then reduced back to the original nondescript drawing of the animal even with the promotional marketing projects made for adult markets in publications that wouldn't be visible to our young showing a whole lotta smokin' anthropomorphic camels, including ol' Smokin' Joe--& pullin' a Camel mask off of an unwanted Marlboro man--apparently invading their hangin' out & partying...

--And my "challenged on the Heavy Duty Wash-, Spin-Speed combination/Turned-Regular Wash-, Spin-Speed combination load" got dried on the "Regular" not "Heavy" temperature setting on the dryer; 'Med. High' as opposed to 'High', in other words...

. . . when it's been years since you've made pancake or waffle batter from a mix because after much experimentation and borrowing here and there from publicly available recipes you've just about perfectly recreated Sambo's pancakes.

Oh, all right:

Heat griddle to 375.

Melt and allow to cool while prepping remaining ingredients:
2 tbsp. butter.

Whisk together in 8-cup mixing bowl:
8 oz. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
4 tbsp. powdered buttermilk

Beat for 5 min. at high speed in 4-cup measuring cup:
2 eggs
2 tbsp. sugar

Add 1 1/4 cup water, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, beat 1 more minute on high.

Scrape foamy egg mixture into dry ingredients, add cooled melted butter. Blend on low speed 30 seconds max, let rest 10 minutes (a COLD oven is a perfect resting place).

Gently ladle 1/4 to 1/2 cup batter onto hot griddle, bake 2 to 3 minutes on a side.

Well, the stuff came out looking perfect (even the actual Delicate item) and I was nice to the laundry drying it on the next-to-lowest (not lowest) heat setting on the dryer, and think everything was still OK...

The load got followed by more of me & my wife's clothes (outer, not under) and switched the heat to highest temp (along with the actual TIMER) to do more good ol', old school BOL dryer drying!

But here is what happened when I had my Andy Williams' You've Got A Friend album play  during my sleep:

The Marvin Gaye "What's Going On?"-like version of "It's too Late" trying to endlessly climb to reach something on a high shelf... (It just got higher and higher, no matter how taller the step stool or ladder I used) until "I'll Be There" came on & I got it...

There's the used appliance store--or NEW if my dream were to actually take place in the era that this song was recorded: His cover of The Fortunes' "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again" (a salesman in a suit played the guitar solo, as well)...

(Another time, before that, it also played as I walked with my tray in some fast food joint/cafeteria trying to find a place to sit at, as people gawked at me hoping I wouldn't sit by them... --Must have been taking place back in my high-school days, though we didn't exactly have some sort of "Arnold's" joint we'd hung out at after school, if that was what had been depicted...)

Along with a cook-top that had these lights which read "Maybe", "Try Again", "Not Now", etc. as it was a combined stove and executive decision maker's cube, while afterwards, his version of Bread's "If" played...

There're a few impeller TL's that let you adjust the water level yourself.
There're also a few that allow you to do the same with wash and rinse temps (including rinse)
There're also a few that have a 'water fall' flow during the cycle.

Anyone know if any machine has all three features?

Burning Question of the Day:

Does anyone have any idea how Home Depot got the moniker Homo Depot? You couldn't tell by ANY of the Home Depots I've ever been to. IMO they all should be called Breeder Building Supplies!

You fought with your sister over who got the most sprinkles on Grandma's homemade cookies (and somehow that sister was swinging the door to the cold front hallway open and closed letting the cold from the outside in--the door to the house was weather-proofed, but the hall just had no duct to warm it, and there was a dashund dog insulting blanket right at the bottom of that door to keep the heat in)...

Somehow an "I'm mad at you!" came from mom (after I think sis asked "Why?") over those two incidents on our way home that late night...

You had a playhouse at the floor of a linen closet, complete with GE appliances cut from a newspaper ad taped to the wall... Yes, a top-freezer fridge, washer, dryer, built-in dishwasher, and electric stove...

You were fascinated with dishwashers that you had a few taped along the wall beside your bed (my one favorite brand was Hotpoint), probably reflecting our Bradford's declining condition...

Lots of fun, funny and anecdotal stuff here, some of which I saw myself reflected in. :D

Adding to it, I find myself rearranging items in the dishwasher if anyone but me loaded it. Certain things belong in certain places, which I am convinced of after surveying and contemplating angles of spray and angles of dish placement.

How about getting totally mesmerized by a vintage Kenmore 90 Series because it allows me to completely customize my washing, just like my wringer washer does!

I remember (and miss!) the "chevy van 30"--with the lettering in all-small letters on the front fenders of the brown van-front panel truck--an early one w/ the slat-grill running around town most-likely delivering furniture for some antique/home furnishings store in Flat Rock, MI that I called "The Furniture Truck"--a newer, white one (also Chevy Van 30) comes in from 1:08 to 1:09 in Madonna's video for "Live To Tell"...

And that you "Lived To Tell" for certain things & events in your life, as well...

When you ask your co-workers about their appliances,

they ask you for advice on fixing them and what to buy when they need new ones, and you can tell them exactly what to buy and what to avoid.

You investigate different models/brands that would probably work for their needs. Then they'll go to Sears and buy a Kenmore.

You see a discarded upright freezer in a Wheat color that you mistake for a Norge or some worthwhile brand that ends up being a Woods--with a plastic interior, likely to be a Frost-Free model, with no inside-light to be seen, but the removed door was blocking the interior and I was on my work, so there was no time to get in depth or even take a picture with my investigation I felt weird doing--it was down the block in my neighborhood...

When on holidays as a kid

at a relatives house, you couldn't wait to see the washer, dryer, and sneak into their vacuum cleaner closet because it was embarrassing to ask what kind they had.
Then when going to Sears on thrifty Monday with the folks, rather than to the toy dept., you bolted for the major appliances. Especially in February wen the new models came out.

You can be trusted not to eat, drink, swallow (thought it was "Swailed" as in if the contents of a bleach bottle had dried up--give milk or cooking oil) or ingest poisonous, toxic chemicals that are not stored out of reach--same for flammables & aerosols...

You went from your stuffed animals being family members, as in wife & kids, to after being hooked on the EMERGENCY ONE-TV series becoming your fellow-paramedics and firefighters, as well as the staff at Rampart General Hospital, then miss everyone working on the midnight shift at Rampart and sleeping in their own bunkers--as I've never had any pretend fires or emergencies during the night at bedtime--to wanting everyone back in bed & becoming family again... --And the loudspeaker, a hunk of paper taped to my bedroom wall, my friend teased me about having there, and wanting me to have something to respond to, as did my sister (told her "mom & dad" were on staff at the Auxiliary Unit & that "they had us young" if they were active & weren't too old or retired), to taking it off the wall that night in that moment--sort'a like the Three Stooges doing that on an episode where they were Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard...

And similated "compartments" for "departments" as in "everyone" was brought back together after being spread out in different compartments (my parents' bedroom closet was the hospital) and got the warm-fuzzy feeling from seeing "departments" in the encyclopedia (under an index table for a certain South American country--forget which one--that would just be cities, etc.) but "compartments" was the right word...

Good imaginations Dave,

We used those gag stcikers that came with what I can't even remember, but they were
like Mad magazine ones. Poopsi cola, Ratz crackers, etc. when we'd play store. Maybe they came with bubble gum.
My oldest friend was born in Oak park. Near 9 mile and Coolidge. Five kids in a two bdrm. ranch with no basement.
Then they moved to Warren and a bigger house.
My folks used to sell at an antique mall in Flat Rock until about ten years ago.
When they had to stop, that's when my mom stopped. She never left the house for three years. She quit going to the doctors, church, everything.
She loved buying and selling. It was her life after we were all grown.
They used to go to Shipshewana a lot.

So, the other day I was giving a co-worker a ride to his car.  He knows of my interest in many things vintage but when this happened I thought of this post.

I asked, "Will you reach in the glove box and grab my sunglasses"?  He said "Ok, boy you can always tell something about a person by what's in their glove box".  As he is rummaging through, look what he finds on top?  He said "Seriously??, in the car too"?

I just simply smiled.

I raided the next door neighbors' Lady Kenmore washer--

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture
--Before Dawn! --With a screwdriver to steal the florescent light, and had no success... --Yeah, 'cause back then I was a real goofy kid!

And years ago, when I was still a kid, I helped the across-the street neighbor buy a whole set of new appliances at one of the last independent retailers, it was called Hot & Cold--in Avocado Green (well, the fridge, stove & dishwasher were; washer & dryer were white) and all!

And at the appliance store I was freaked out by a range on the sales floor with an over-the upper oven (maybe it was an over-cooktop--this could'a been a single-oven with a warming tray, and a built-in hood) that you couldn't get to turn off or close... (I was playing around with it, but at least I didn't have to pay anyone "for breaking it"...!)

It was a Tappan electric range (at the time, and at my young age hard for me to figure out how the oven cleaned--was there a tank of Oven Spray somewhere connected to the stove? No, the heat fro the oven baked off the schmutz...) Replacing a white Whirlpool top-freezer put in the basement to be used as second fridge...

A Hotpoint Side-by-Side refrigerator, but with no ice chute, nor even an ice maker inside--and the two light bulbs in the fridge compartment became only one, as the panel back there the bulbs were behind was hard to open to replace them, when one burned out... Ditto for the dark freezer... The white Whirlpool got moved to the basement to become a second fridge...
I got lots of compliments on the Kelvinator dishwasher--the neighbor said it cleaned so marvelously and she never had to pre-rinse anything she'd put in it... It was a fairly top-of-the-line, not to mention a portable she had connected to the plumbing behind the one before it--a white top loader that I think was a Kitchen Aid...

And not wanting to trust ANYTHING in their LAUNDRY ROOM except WHIRLPOOL:

The washer was a white Whirlpool with three temperatures for was all with cold rinse and a single-speed, with two water levels, replacing a similar one that you gave you three--that I got the panel of--"And you may be an AutoWasher.org just for that!"...

While the dryer was a swinging door Whirlpool in white, as well--timed dry with maybe an Auto-Dry permanent press, and two temperatures: Too High and Too Low!

The discarded washer got put in the garage, while the dryer was the only original appliance from that menagerie to get moved to their new house (and where I found out it was a gas dryer) where they'd lived out the rest of their lives, until they died...

--No, no! GUESS WHO STAYS IN THE BASEMENT WATCHING THE FURNACE BEING REPAIRED, UNTIL MOM MAKES HIM GO BACK UPSTAIRS????!!!!

Yes, it was me...

Your grandma stays at the house to watch you while your parents and sister are away, just for you to not want to answer questions about stuff in the house except how to turn the washer timer, to start the machine, and you won't do stuff like helping put the clothes away...

You probably got your mouth washed out with soap for staying bad stuff or imitating stuff from the movies ("SHUT THE G-D D--MN DOOR!") or TV...

Maybe we should have an Appliance Stalking Thread:  I saw something even more interesting, and that was a built-in Caloric gas wall-oven, in white, and I could not make out the cooktop on the counter on the left, next to it...  It was a far distance away in a kitchen in the back of a house seen through the open front door--and right across the street from my daughter's elementary school....!

A rare ocasión that my wife and I had to go there and park in the school's parking lot around the back of it to see her in a play, and this was in the daytime an hour in the morning after school had started...  We were walking around the school to get to the front entrance we could still enter through, to go to the media center/library where the play was held... Too bad the owner wasn't around for me to complement the sight of that oven & comment on it, nor gain any additional info on the cooktop beside it, or whatever additional similarly-vintage appliances that house may have had...

Do the appliances seen in my high school's big home economics class, I had never had taken, but seen through the big open window in the hallway count?

My cousin backed me away from a gas range in her house I was touching the knobs to--literally thinking I was going to turn the stove on (we were very young--and this was what must have been the short time that she, my aunt & uncle lived in Michigan--Ypsilanti, to be exact, before moving to Maine), and well,--Hot Damn!--maybe I was...

You push your toy lawnmower (while dad is pushing his real lawnmower--which was actually a REEL lawnmower--no electrically-powered motor, or gas engine) over a hole in the ground just for a swarm of bees to fly out & stick right on you (Dad, as well) then have to go to the hospital and have a few nightmares of them flying out of a dryer vent sticking out of the side of a house frequently walked by...

Days before that incident, that dryer vent was more pleasant to look at, hear the dryer running & blowing its hot exhaust through it and somehow hearing America's "A Horse With No Name" play...  (And a year later, walking by the gas station on these cement banks on the way back from 7-11 with my Slurpee, long after the bee-attack, and afterwhich it had been forgotten, it was Steely Dan playing "Reeling In The Years"...)

Some turn signals

still click. It depends where the flasher is mounted. They used to be in the fuse block below the dash.
Ford used only one flasher for turn signal and hazard flashers, while GM used two.
Todays Impala for example, has it mounted middle behind the dash, quietly insulated. It can barley be heard. I think that's why the hazard flasher switch is either left of the radio, or on top of the steering column.
As for the position of the signal lever, that is variable to the country you are driving in.
Homologated right hand drive vehicles have the lever facing the door, so the down position is for a right turn.

Actually most of the time in right hand drive car, the lever is towards the middle of the car. There was an exception for quite a long time for cars made in countries where they drive on the right.

Well, this was when I was riding my sister's big wheel, and the person with me (a neighbor-gal who acted as one of our babysitters) told me "middle cuts it off" but in my youthful mind, insisted Middle was Left, Up was Right, and Down would be Off...

I made an Oyster & Milkshake stand in the sandbox, just for her to tell me "Milkshakes are Fattening & I hate Oysters!", and for me to tell her that my food was Kosher just to tell me that Oysters cannot be, unless they're imitation, so I made them imitation (with Salmon, then, inside fake plastic shells; wouldn't matter, everything was mud and sand...)

She told me of her first job at the local Burger Chef, where the floor where the fryer was, was slippery from the grease and the walk-in refrigerator/freezer floor was slippery from its operating conditions (and I asked about the lights in the kitchen & in the walk-in appliance: Florescent and Standard (not Soft White) Incandescent...)--Oooh, boy, was I a piece o' work! --Where WAS Automaticwasher.org BACK THEN????!!!!

Louis, yes

that was when the left hand drive steering column was just switched to the right side of the car. That is not homologation.
It means that all instruments, lighting, registration plate mounting, etc. is designed into the vehicle for both export applications to be prototypically opposite.
Ford Galaxies sold in Australia or NZ that were from Canada even had the master brake cylinder still on the left side of the car. A steel bar was added from the brake pedal to the vacuum booster under the hood in front of the fire wall. Those may have even been CKD (complete knockdown) vehicles and assembled by Ford Australia in Cambelfield Victoria.
Canadian full size Pontiacs shipped to Australia and New Zealand only had the Chevrolet dash and instrument panel.
I live in the former motor city and I know cars. Even the former DAF variomatic.

All US assembled and Canadian

vehicles for export are for sure. That was part of the world class quality ISO 9000
plan from the early 90's.
I read the article you posted, so I'd have to check say a Jeep Grand Cherokee right hand drive to see where the turn signal stalk is.

things have not changed that much

It appears the turn signal stalk is indeed on the inside facing side of the vehicles, so they are still only switching them to the right hand side.
However, this means the ignition lock is on the outside facing the door for right hand drive. Grand Cherokees now have push button start, but are still built on the same platform as back in the 90's.
The sheet metal and interiors have undergone several changes over the years, but it is essentially the same vehicle it was when Chrysler acquired Jeep from AMC.
Only the Hurricane inline 6 cylinder is gone.
The Fiat designed new junior Cherokee replaced the Liberty, which was marketed as a junior Cherokee in Europe.
No doubt we will see more changes, like with GM, and it's smaller platform Acadia, now sharing it's platform with the Equinox and Terrain suv's, saving raw material and weight from the heavier Traverse, and Enclave. It loses it's third row of seating for seven.

Do you have any idea of what percentage of the cars are homologated, have the lever facing the door? I noticed most European cars are not homologated, have the lever on facing the middle.

More radio days: Doing my homework to what was once a favorite radio station's "underground program" before it joined the modern-day trend of making a format of playing the same stuff over and over again...

I recognized the group's name from the one hit they'd had a few years before this one, "Hold Your Head Up", which I sung out (yelled out!) to the radio...

Oh, yes, SEVEN-WHOLE-MINUTES of this was draggy, but I needed something to help me get through my studies, besides, that summer after High School, I was collecting their records, one-by-one, save for the Rod & Russ solos (well, Russ, I'd in later years, picked up on, but only the first three--or maybe dismissed the last two... --A photo shows him in the third record scratching his head wondering if that sort of thing recorded in Los Angeles with that area's musicians and producer Keith Olsen would really work, just for its follow-up BARNET DOGS (should have kept it longer) to show him back in England with a look of rebound in his more comfortable retreat...  INTO THE FIRE (did I even buy this one?) I guess, was where he had better come up with something interesting soon--I could easily put a few of my Party Bulbs in the basement light sockets (though I only have a couple side by side--this one gal I'd hung out with, a few years ago, had a whole ceiling with about twenty of 'em in hers) & my wife to shoot some shots of me, posing like Mr. Ballard, if I had my old Fender axe & some good threads that look cool, getting raggedy & not how raggedy my stale duds, I wear nowadays, are looking...

I have an Aldi near me, too...  Only one time I had no quarter, so that meant carrying the rear-ward facing child seat around the store juggling my groceries & trying not to drop my newborn...

OK, more from the archives, so I don't make a whole bunch o' posts for:

My sis & I each had to have OUR OWN dollhouses, each with its now furniture, and Fisher Price Little People--of which an additional set provided a washer & dryer, and a toilet the family it could actually sit on & a bathtub they could fit in--and somehow the pairs all, each had their mates, though one dryer accompanied the Fisher Price Farm Silo used as a wash tub for hand-washing (I had a ladder for the wash board--and some string for a clothes line--and unlike my daughter who plays with REAL WATER, it's OK for me to just pretend!)...

The tabletop juke box, three selections for fifty-cents at a restaurant... (This was the '80's...)

I was so geeked over the operation, and the songs I picked-well, I only remember two: "shake it up" (the cars) and "centerfold" (j. geils) and my mom not appreciating my ear-to-ear grin, giving it some "other" undesirable term... --And nonchelantlantly begging me: "Don't smile when a record comes on", but which I couldn't help...

Think I liked the '70's better, where my dad and I were at the local Coney Island: "Rock The Boat" by The Hues Corporation, that one of the help, a guy working there, put the money in and played it for us...

Remember "Hey, come get your love" by Redbone playing before it, prompting me wanting my favorite... (well, I like that one, too...)

Yes Dave,

I remember both of those songs. How about this one; "Oh it's so nice to be with you" I love all the things you say and do. I forget right now who sang it, but they were from Detroit. I also recall gas was like 33 cents per gallon that year.

You see a post from one of your friends on Facebook who just got a freezer, then share a couple pics of your situation ranging from a golf tee-sized amount of space left in your over-loaded refrigerator's freezer, to the ideal location (well, to share w/ you guys, too!) of where to put a separate freezer, though I've been offered a pint-sized cube that sadly broke (it was a no-name Montgomery Ward) then possibly could'a gotten a very inefficient vintage Gibson Frost Clear Sovereign upright, that it replaced, each from my mother-in-law (sorry I never took any pictures of the latter) that a month or two before she moved, flooded the laundry/utility room (& most-likely got discarded by the new homeowners)...

Too bad that I didn't get a response or even just needed at least a "Like"...  (A pint-sized cube is what the F-B friend went out and bought; don't know the brand--or even what store...  Best Buy, Home Depot or Lowe's, I'm sure...)

. . . 12 years old was the age at which you were deemed capable of going to Sage's (San Bernardino-based 1960s-1970s mega-store) with a bag of iffy tubes that your father extracted from the Curtis Mathes black and white TV/AM/FM/FM Stereo/BSR 3-speed record changer home entertainment center and coming back with working replacements.

I remember

that one as well. It looks like it was filmed in Amsterdam. I spotted a Vauxhall Victor, or Viva, and an Opel Kadette.
I was about 14, listening to it in my room, when my grandma came upstairs. She visited on Sundays usually, or we her. She said I was growing up, and would soon be interested in dating, and asked would I want to someday get married and sleep with a woman. I asked her how will I know? She said, you will know when you get the "ding".
I let it just go over my head. I eventually got the "ding" alright, but not for a girl. LoL.

Yes,remember those well!!!Some were rigged,though-so you would think you need to buy new tubes at the stores inflated prices. When I needed tubes-got them from a commercial supplier-MUCH cheaper-and you could get real name brands like GE,Sylvania,Mullard,Tung-Sol,not the unknown white box stuff many of those tubes testers were stocked with.Show this to young people-they wouldn't have a clue.

You wait by the radio for your favorite songs which I did even as a kid--and got "Evil Woman" by ELO (got a teaser from some knock-off instrumental sound-alike that came out at the time by---????) and Styx "Come Sail Away"--and more to the Starland Vocal Band than "Afternoon Delight"--That was "The Light Of My Life"--teary eyed, from the idea it would NEVER to come on, to the relief that it DID!!!!

And that was a General Electric lighted dial clock radio w/ AM Only, that at our local toy store, Kiddie Land there was an AM/FM version of, while for nostalgia's sake more-than-ten-years-ago, came the AM Only version at a flea market bought for $4 out of the $5 it was marked for ($4 was all I had "You can give me another dollar, next week..." --the person selling it) but the clock didn't glow, and shortly got rid of, as the alarm was hard to set, as it became on my old one, too...

You have to be carefull whipping potatoes with a mixer, or they get sticky. A potato ricer works best, then fold in the butter, milk, sour cream, etc. Sure, a hand mixer is gentle enough.

My cat Fluffy meowed over the bed every morning before my clock radio went off to wake me when it was time to go to trade school... One time the clock-radio went off before she could climb up on the bed to meow at me, playing "Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp, then she'd meowed along with the cat-noises the instruments made, over me waking up... --And my mom looking in, admiring everything...

You put your mom on Hold when she calls you from the neighbor's house across the street, while she's helping you type your book report for school (I don't know what was wrong w/ our typewriter! Did it need a new RIBBON?!) and in that book, there was a gal that drove an MG over a tarred road, but she'd misinterpreted the make of the car as a Mr. G. (what my girl I had the mad crush on's dad's personalized license plate on his car had) as opposed to MmmmmgGeeeee...

That is, the phone at our house lay on the kitchen counter while I was waiting for my Crosby, Stills & Nash '45' of "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes" (b/w "Marrakesh (not AMERICAN) Express, as my dad pointed out!) to finish... (And the teacher whose class I was in doing the book report for was a big fan of the group--there was a book w/ a photo of these guys, plus Neil Young in it (And somehow it reminded me of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It Was Worth"--but no way could that be what they were playing; they were in a studio around a keyboard (I think Graham Nash was playing) while the rest of the three principals had their guitars) and boasted of having all their albums, and not just seeing them in concert at Medowbrook (which is where they'd notably played circa. that 30-+-years-ago, but all around the Country...)

Mom gave me the "I'm doing this for you!", as I'd finally got to the phone--and I don't think it occurred to me until after a long pause what her questions before I could clear up the confusion she'd been stumbling over, meant!!!!

Years ago Mom burned the cauliflower--and pulled the chain that started the wall-mounted exhaust fan (nearing the last times anything like that ever got used--or even WORKED!--hence I would ride my bike past the four houses on our block (including ours), and the seven across the street from us & the seven around the block behind those, saying "Closed", "Open", "Open", "Closed", in viewing how many doors on those sides of the houses showed those fans (which by now all of probably fell into total dis-use) were on--even slowly peering up a driveway, with a little suspense in my voice saying: "OPEN!" (--maybe even Shouting)... Can't help but wonder if some grown person on a 10-speed riding in the street, that I saw, was mimicking me--he seemed to be saying that to himself, riding past the houses like I did... (Maybe not...)

Anyway, at my grandma's sister's house, my great-aunt Ruth, I noticed no exhaust fan in her kitchen--wall or ceiling, so asked what does she do when she burns the cauliflower (I asked my grandma that, after the incident--she said that she just juts opened a window) and she turned on this exhaust fan that was over her oven (I think she had a Fabulous 400 or Flair-type of stove, that years later I completely forgot what it got replaced with, or just never acknowledged a plain, ordinary cooking appliance taking its place, as much everything else--including a stacked washer & dryer, that I think replaced a stacked W&D) and gave a bashful "Wow!" when she turned it on...

You go into a thrift/resale/junk shop and immediately look to your left where the appliances would be just for the lady-owner of the store to tell you: "THERE ARE NO APPLIANCES!" and keeps asking you: "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?!" when you got your head locked & face frozen in that direction, only to see a fitting room ("THAT'S A FITTING ROOM", she also screamed at me) in that far corner where, well, you thought was appliances, yes, she only sold clothes ("I only sell clothes...", she said calmly), bed of story...

I dreamed I was driving my dream-yellow Cadillac Coupe De Ville (1977, most-likely) and while stopped at the corner probably on my way to my dad's (maybe to put it away in his garage) noticed the under dash lights on--and turned the light switch to see the center-map reading lights on (on the lower part of the dash board) and the rear pillar lights didn't go on (they were burned out) and don't remember the square lights on the doors lighting (maybe they didn't work) but it was raining as hard as it is today and somehow my daughter going on seven-years-old in a few days was perhaps not even seven-MONTHS-old in the back seat & the car stalled as the light was still red & I was playing w/ the lights inside while the wipers were rapidly pushing away the rain & the windshield fogged up (& somehow this car had some bullet-proof shield right there in the windshield) but I got her started as the light turned red (I wonder why I didn't dream about the instrument panel warning lights going on & off) and said (to Laura back there) "I'm gonna watch where & when I drive this car, from now on"...

(I was actually sleeping at my dad's 'cause my brother-in-law was staying at my house late & beyond each other's tolerance...)

Luckily product to point out to him--wonder why in 5th Grade one of my classmates brought in his copy of 52nd STREET when BJ's latest was GLASS HOUSES, circa. 1980-1981, and that prev. summer following a miserable experience at Day Camp, had just been introduced to stuff like "It's Still Rock 'N' Roll To Me", etc. and this contemporary of mine was not the least bit familiar--but, hey!--what did I know even about Black Sabbath, other than a few snatches of stuff from PARANOID, like the title, when it had just come out?!--well, that's where I'd yet to learn where Ozzy Osborn was FROM! He'd just begun his David Surkamp-like career, but I'd sooner caught up on Black Sab! --Yadda, yada, yada... (And so on, Etcetera...)

I burst out laughing (foaming at the mouth--saliva, drool splashing on the floor, almost hitting the laundry I was taking out of my dryer) when I thought about the very old Kenmore that one of my child-hood friends had (next to a newer one-knob Kenmore washer--now thinking about THAT should'a been what had me ROTF!) that had a small incandescent console appliance light, bigger than a night-light bulb over the big Timer/Automatic Drying knob, that probably didn't work; wonder what the original washer to that even was--both got replaced by VERY BOL Mont. Ward machines--yeeh, why wasn't I gassed up over the thought  of those?!

Out of nowhere--my friend said "We need a new dryer, referring to that one in his laundry room--and I forgot where we were, maybe in school--a study hall, as we were a couple grades apart, him in 6th grade, beginning middle school, and me, in 8th, leaving for high school--and we became friends w/ not only him, living on the next block from me, but coming over apologizing for hurting my li'l sis' in school (they were in the same class--he was just teasing her, actually)...

Just being really thankful, I guess, for having good, newish, working (as well as Repairable) Appliances!!!!

With me, its looking carefully at every appliance and asking questions about them every time. I will now ask if any of theirs are not what they thought they were going to be, do they like them or not. Not that I would buy new appliances unless I absolutely had to. Ironically, nobody scoffs me now and think I am a brain on appliances. But when I was a kid asking about a washer I was too short to even look in was yelled at to "Get away from that". Now they ask me for advice.

Yes, imagine being so appliance-obsessed back then! I was--it was grama's big green top freezer Kelvinator refrigerator, her GE filter-flo washer w/ the left-opening lid, her BOL Kelvinator dryer w/ the horizontal controls--an up to 120-minute timer and a toggle switch for heat on, heat off and the list surely goes on and on...

My friend and I were playing with our building toys and I wanted to make an an electric stove and he wanted a gas stove, ("NO ELECTRIC STOVES! GAS STOVES!" he shouted) and I wanted a to build a gas dryer ("NO GAS DRYERS! ELECTRIC DRYERS!" he also shouted) and he wanted an electric dryer...

Here ya go

joeekaitis's profile picture

Cook 1 pound of elbow macaroni 2 minutes shy of the shorter cooking time on the package.

While you're waiting for the water (3 1/2 quarts in a 5-quart Visions or CorningWare Pyroceram Dutch oven) to come to a boil, fold together 2 15-ounce cans of chili (with or without beans as desired) and a pound of shredded cheddar cheese in a large mixing bowl.

Before draining the macaroni, ladle a cup of the cooking water into the chili and cheese.  While the macaroni drains, stir the water, chili and cheese until blended.  Dump in the drained macaroni and fold together until the cheese starts to melt into strings.

Wipe out the Dutch oven and spray it with nonstick cooking spray.  Dump the mixture into the Dutch oven.  Cover with lid.

At this point the Dutch oven can be refrigerated until dinner time.

Bake covered from a cold start (disable the fast preheat feature if your oven is so equipped) at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes, let stand another 15 minutes before serving.

Actually the dream took place right at where you enter Roseville North of the freeway, I-696, opposite of Eastpointe, which is South...

At a part of the turnaround on Gratiot where you can't actually turn but go straight onto another street, forcing me to go to the next turnaround so I can go to the record store there BLAST FROM THE PAST, along w/ Eastpoint's MELODIES & MEMORIES that I also frequent...

However, while I am not all the familiar w/ that Laundromat in Mt. Clemens that you speak of, I am fairly familiar w/ that Mt. Clemens area & Macomb Township, where I'd hung out at a lot in my past...

And, regardless, here's what must have been playing long ago, at what was probably my first Center Dial Experience,--when I had, as a very young child, first seen such a Maytag! And I wasn't even playing"Sweet Caroline" or anything by Neil, just quite a flashback in my dreams, vs. my life Today...--at which "Damp Dry" seemed to have been pounded out by the notes just as the song starts:

Oh, Grandpa's Ford Ranchero 500--when the cab filled up w/ the three or more it was only meant to hold--and I got to ride by myself in back in the BED!

Well, there was a cap over it (Sportsliner, made in Zanesville, OH and San Jose California) and we never got pulled over by the police--and I guess I could ride there safely with nothing to hang onto--and the tailgate was even left open & the cap door, up! (Think my sister only once rode with me there) and could say a few bathroom talk words, but alas, I can recall Gramps saying something about Carbon Monoxide and there was the safety matter that ceased riding back there, and just going in an additional vehicle for more people to his garden/fields where he grew his own produce...

Give me an old appliance nameplate (three Kelvinator Product of American Motors) and I'll make a FAKE appliance!

I went from ONE fake air conditioner in my old bedroom made from a cardboard box hung over a window on an outside wall (that I almost made and hung one outside with a handwritten name plate and hung over that window, to two more, hung over/between two windows next to each other and even my bedroom door...

Talk going around a few middle school friends, one who'd been in that bedroom, and the other who'd been told (Chris) telling me: "Marvin said you have a fake air conditioner in your room..." "You have THREE fake air conditioners in your room"...

I was 12 to 14 in Junior High at the time...

"Dave got a fake air conditioner in his room!"--Yes, over heard Marvin saying that (after Chris rapping to be about it--"You got THREE fake Air Condtioners!" he whispered)... The FAILED attempt to hang a box for the 1st outside led me to just hang the two more, showing the units INSIDE!

Is it Potpourri, (Poh-porrey) or POT-POREY?!

My mom had me bring a vacuum cleaner into the shop, when I was about that adolescent age to be as frequently corrected by the repair man there as I kept on pronouncing it in the obvious spelling... (And in high school, just a year or couple of years or so later, were posters on the hallway walls about a production of--You Guessed it!--POTPOURRI, that looking at it recalled my awkward mis- pronounciation every time I'd seen them!

Well, yeh, the previous post of the potpourri sucked up in the vacuum was done by poor lil' ol' ME! --Probably had to pay for it being repaired for it being clogged up & promised to never do it again, as well...

Have you ever foraged through a loaf of moldy bread w/ a knife and a jar of peanut butter tearing off every piece of each slice that was covered with blue spots just to find as you were eating it, MORE BLUE SPOTS?! --That was my sister and I years ago...--the things you find in a broken or neglected home of neglected, impoverished children, which neither of us were, but still--... (Well, how DID those spots of blue mold get there, or the bread get to be like THAT there?!)

OK, had a dream long ago to 'RLJ' being on the CD player of struttin' through el barrio while "Willie & The White Boys Cool" was comin' on--a speaker on the street played the horn solo, a Walk/Don't Walk-type sign had the lyrics up in lights citing "my pals, Angela, Perry, and Mario", w/ some street player doing the accordion solo, and the vision of the Cheech & Chong van backing up a driveway--probably trampling flowers on the way up there too...

And although I program my CD's in a prefderred order, surely the remaining track "Company" is the wistful image of sitting on a porch on that quiet night that walk through the dusk turned into, and then I woke...

(Well, there was the image of "Danny's All Star Joint", a track that comes several before it, and the 'goings on' in it, but right now not as significant...)

When your husband and you are almost killed on a severe crash at the 405 and the next day the only thing that calms both of you is running a load and standing in front of the washer during the whole cycle.

Until now i can't believe Darryl and I Are alive.

I mimicked the father "thinking work comes first, who ain't got the time to quench a thirst" while me & my soon-to-be-one-year-old-daughter were listening to this, jumping off the bed, waving my hand on her, opening the door--AND:

--...She sang out every "No, no, no-no-no, no-no, no, nooooooo", just right, & every word & syllable!

. . . you read or hear some genius write or say "Don't get used to shopping at ALDI*.  They're going to close in a year because Americans will never rent a shopping cart or bag their own groceries.  It's just too different and it'll never, ever catch on in the USA." and can smell a competitor's shill.

*feel free to substitute Lidl.

. . . as a child you misheard the phrase and wondered why the one-story ranch-style mid-century home you grew up in had "4-stair heating" but no stairs.

... When you read a thread and have a brilliant idea for a new model with the old school "features" people here love.

When you...

Dressed up as a vacuum cleaner, an air conditioner , and a washing machine for Halloween. (When I was about 4 or so)

Also, when you started collecting automatics last year, you now have 15 with more on the way. 🙃

You never have and never will buy celebrity-branded cookware, tableware and/or appliances, especially when said celebrity doesn't use them on his or her Food Network/Cooking Channel show.

You go back and watch the washer customer demonstration video a second time, because the first time you were concentrating on what the machines were doing, and the second time you're wanting to get more of a look at the svelte but curvy MILF in her low-cut top...

...or is that just me?! Seems most of the guys round here are gay.

. . . you heard the angels sing when that elusive Ambiano induction cooktop showed up unannounced and 100% new-in-box (original tape seals intact) on the ALDI Finds aisle.

Congratulations on your find!

I hope that you enjoy induction cooking as much as I do.

ALDI Finds have included full-size blenders, toaster ovens, countertop convection ovens, electric skillets and griddles, and in the UK and other countries, personal computers.

In the summer, gas barbecues and patio dining ensembles appear.  They may even have sold lawn mowers and string trimmers.

Just have to keep the ol' peepers peeled.

We went to this house, a long, long time ago, where this Brady-bunch-sized family lived, and there was even a waterfront behind the house, and a treehouse as well (I have no idea who these people even were!) but guess who stayed inside and played with the play kitchen (it had a sink with a garbage disposal underneath--but a picture of against the back of the cabinet, and with the On/Off switch on it--Yes, it was ME, probably making a make-believe dinner for every one, that instead of everybody going in for, we juts left...

Mom criticized me, for doing that & me saying, that the real kitchen had a green gas stove with an upper/lower oven, (either a Kenmore, Caloric or Roper--really forgot which, but it could have been a Caloric, as I think the grids were wire, as opposed to the standard cast-iron) so she did even more if that's what the visit meant more to me, than my sister, who played outside w/ the rest of the kids... Don't know how my folks knew them, at all...

There was also a relative of my mom's who lived in Ohio we visited, also around that long ago, who somehow lived in a house with the same floor plan as ours (but the bedroom where my sister's was had a door that opened on the back stairs landing (even with a lock) and Copper appliances, with a Kenmore roto-rack dishwasher, top-of-the-line, EXACTLY JUST LIKE the one across the street from our house (it also had "our" floor plan)... Forgot what the stove was, but I remember it being an electric, and I think it could have even been a Frigidaire "Super" Radiant-Tube, while if the refrigerator wasn't a Sears Coldspot (like that house's 'cross the street from us ALSO was) Automatic Ice Maker Frostless 19, then maybe a Philco/Ford built by GE...
