As Jeff has asked that only historical information be added to the Development of AW Club thread, I'll start a sibling thread for comments and reactions to the wonderful information he provided.
It was fascinating to learn about the pre-history and origins of the club. And thanks for posting the articles on Chuck (People Magazine) and Tom & John (Washington Post) too! Jeff's thread is a must-read and I'm looking forward to additional posts shedding more light on the early days of the group. THANK YOU, JEFF! |

Thank You Jeff.
That was Brilliant. Just Brilliant.
I had a vague idea about the history of AW, but the details are amazing.
It was wonderful to meet you this summer along with the Northeast Contingents as well as the Representative of the Midwest Sector. (Great to see you Greg)
I hope to see you on my way down south this winter.
Warm Regards to all, Eddie |

I remember finding Jeff's Yahoo group and joining it. I was over the moon there was someone else into appliances after browsing appliance related sites around the world. I joined the group and a few other people also did, but it didn't catch on. Not much later Jeff started the Yahoo club (more like a website, way more possibilities). The groups are nothing more than glorified mailinglists. Many members joined and we had vivid discussions about appliances and other things. Then Robert built the first website just before and we abandoned the club. Some time later the Yahoo club was turned into a group because Yahoo stopped the club activities, I guess they became less popular because people preferred to build their own website. The original group was deleted due to not enough activity IIRC.
Here's the link to the original Yahoo club: groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/clas... If you scroll down you can see in the Message History that we used to post a lot there. And also how fast the number of messages decreased when the website was launched in 2001. |
