As Jeff has asked that only historical information be added to the Development of AW Club thread, I'll start a sibling thread for comments and reactions to the wonderful information he provided.

It was fascinating to learn about the pre-history and origins of the club. And thanks for posting the articles on Chuck (People Magazine) and Tom & John (Washington Post) too!

Jeff's thread is a must-read and I'm looking forward to additional posts shedding more light on the early days of the group.

THANK YOU, JEFF!

Like many more will agree, we didnt know anyone else felt the way we do about older stuff in general and mostly washers and to know this whole place got started long before even the internet is great to know. Long May It Live!

I've been a member since 2006 and have always wondered how AW came about. and it's very like the VCCC! People with similar tastes...feeling about vintage appliances started talking via the internet and next thing you know, people are gathering for the first Wash-In! To me this is fascinating reading and I've printed it out to add to my files on the clubs. I'm delighted that we've finally gotten the history of AW told! The recent re-broadcast of the Cape Cod wash-in was great and I'm proud to say I know the participants via AW.
But to me the way you've phrased this...comments or reactions says you aren't happy about this turn of events or concerned that AW is going to become more and more "popular" with people who really aren't "into" our enjoyment of vintage appliances and are we going to be overrun with more and more people just wanting to find out when their washers were made or how much to sell them for. If I'm wrong, please know this is how I see the phrasing of the question.

Thank You Jeff.

That was Brilliant. Just Brilliant.

I had a vague idea about the history of AW, but the details are amazing.

It was wonderful to meet you this summer along with the Northeast Contingents as well as the Representative of the Midwest Sector. (Great to see you Greg)

I hope to see you on my way down south this winter.

Warm Regards to all,  Eddie

Hi Greg-- thanks for your comment/question. Don't know how you got any negative impression as, certainly, none was intended. We covered all we know about your first wash-in, maybe you can add something else. Think the AW is doing pretty well, Jeff

Oh! I absolutely do too! I've watched the CBS clip countless times and feel I know each and every one of you! And I'm glad to be part of AW. But I've watched the VCCC retreat into itself and sure hope this doesn't happen here!
Please accept my apologies if I've offended anyone. It was not my intention.

More information about Yahoo

I remember finding Jeff's Yahoo group and joining it. I was over the moon there was someone else into appliances after browsing appliance related sites around the world. I joined the group and a few other people also did, but it didn't catch on. Not much later Jeff started the Yahoo club (more like a website, way more possibilities). The groups are nothing more than glorified mailinglists. Many members joined and we had vivid discussions about appliances and other things. Then Robert built the first website just before and we abandoned the club. Some time later the Yahoo club was turned into a group because Yahoo stopped the club activities, I guess they became less popular because people preferred to build their own website. The original group was deleted due to not enough activity IIRC.

Here's the link to the original Yahoo club:

groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/clas...

If you scroll down you can see in the Message History that we used to post a lot there. And also how fast the number of messages decreased when the website was launched in 2001.

Louis-- Thanks for the link to the Yahoo group! It's fun to read these very early posts. You should put it in Jeff's thread as well. These pioneering posts are certainly historical and enlightening.

It's becoming quite obvious I'm not going to get much done today, LOL.

Thank You!  Very interesting thread!   I remember Greg had a television appearance as well. I can not remember which show?   I know Robert had machines in  "Mona Lisa Smile" and  "The Prize Winner of Defiance".  I do not remember if Hollywood credited Robert ?  I still remember finding "Applianceville" and the feverish reading every night after work.. was darn near late for work a couple of mornings!
