Just when I was bummed out about the General Electric, this little fellow showed up. Whirlpool MOD. LCR7244HQ1, Serial #VLM0940750. Does anyone know it's manufactured date? Haven't tried it yet, but it certainly seems well used compared to my prior World Washer. Let's see what morning brings.

WP WW Date Of Manufacture

combo52's profile picture

9th week of 2002, hopefully it won't have much wrong with it.

We still see a lot of these every week on service calls.

The most common fixable problem is a leak or cracked fitting in the air-dome hose which causes the machine to overfill and flood.

And unfortunately the most common problem we see is bad main seal and bearings which is not cost effective or easy to repair [ more than $500.00 ]

Let us know what you find, John L.

Slow fill...

Either the screen is clogged or the water inlet valve is stuck.

The screen was clogged, water flow is good now. But it has a small leak somewhere on fill. Pump, air dome, hose? I don't think the water inlet valve is bad, the leak stops as soon as I turn off the washer. I just realized you can't put it in a spin cycle independently.  Bummer.

It does have the drain and spin. Or do you want it to go directly to spin if you set it for that?

I meant you can't go directly to drain and spin.

you may have to do a 'stop'...or 'power down'....and then make a new selection at the bottom and press start from there for a 'drain/spin'....

some can be tricky when wanting to change cycles or options once the machine is started...

There was a "Drain and Spin" cycle on the dial. DOH!

Anyhow, the leak seems to be from below, the pump? Definitely not the water inlet valve or anywhere else above. But here's a new thing. When it finished the spin cycle, it stopped so hard the machine literally spun around. Scary. I found out that it's most likely to be a "spin brake lockup". Easily correctable with a dab of high temperature silicone-based grease applied to the inside of the brake drum .

So two issues (so far) to correct.  God I miss that Avanti. Not a thing wrong with it.

Maybe it won't brake as hard when there is clothes in it? Friends had one of these a while back and I don't remember it having a brake at all though. Theirs finally died after years of washing for a family of 4. Tub seal and bearings went.. Sounded like a jet taking off! So loud!

Too Fast Braking

combo52's profile picture

This is a common problem on DD washers as mentioned in the Link, I have been adding a dab of grease to DD washers with this problem for years. [ it does not need to be special Hi-Temp-Silicone Grease ].

I have yet to see this problem on a WW but it is certainly possible and the same fix should work, note however the WW has an external brake band that rides on the outside of a brake drum, so it looks a little different than what is shown on the link.

I had laid the machine on it's side and noticed the brake band on the outside. Am I to lube the band then?

Great find. I never get tired of seeing these machines, they're wonderfully versatile for their size.

The grease did the trick, stops smooth and quiet. Washes well, however there is still a small leak when it starts to pump water out. The pump and hose are dry. The leak seems to be coming from the right, front of the machine. Going to have to open it up.

I found the source of the slow leak. The O ring had disintegrated on the water pump.

Fine, I sealed the pump. The leak remains. I can't tell from where it's coming from. All hoses are dry, pump is dry. As far as I can tell, the outer tub is OK. The leak only occurs when the machine is in spin. Not while filling or agitation. I suspect it's the seal. I suppose this project is dead in the water.

Louie, check closely for a hairline crack in the pump housing......had one that sat out over the winter, seemed to take forever to find that leak....

It's the seal. I don't have the time to spend since I'm back on the Caloric. So it's adieu, adios...

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions.
