Hi all,

Some of you are aware that I acquired this very lovely but tired looking machine last week and throughout the week I have been painstakingly restoring it. Being mechanically and electrically sound, most of the work was cosmetic due to the infamous 'brittle plastic syndrome' associated with Hotpoints of this era. Furthermore, with this being a Polar White machine, I had the task of trying the get the various bits of trim to tie in together so that the machine didn't look like a Picasso.

The biggest job was the reconstruction of the lid. Being top of the range, this model had a decorative chipboard lid or 'worktop' that I think was also an attempt to add some soundproofing. The plastic trim that goes around the lid was cracked in numerous places and was also partially missing at the top righthand corner. Having successfully done a similar repair to my Hoover Conquest 507 cylinder cleaner I patched the lid up with Isopon car body filler and spray painted the trim with a suitable shade of white matched at my local Halfords. I'm very pleased that the lid turned out well because the I'm not able to hide it under a work surface.

Having had no luck so far finding a replacement dispenser handle or dispenser handle insert I set about replicating a replacement with the help of CJ. The end result is fantastic and serves its purpose perfectly!

Taking advice from Paul, both of the sidestrips were painted in the same shade of white and reversed so that the obligatory chips and cracks were hidden. I also replaced the kickstrip resulting in a complete cosmetic overhaul of the machine.

I'm very lucky to have had the opportunity to own such a lovely machine since it's one more dream machine ticked off my list. So, I'm really chuffed with it despite having my work cut out for me. Thanks everyone who helped me and offered me their advice.

James

Power module, pressure switch and motor choke. It's amazing how the quality of electronics has nosedived since the time this machine was produced.

Original GEC 1400 spin motor. I'm glad my machine still has it due to the notoriety of these motors burning out and being replaced with AEG or FHP alternatives. This was due to the limitations in the GEC motors design which had its humble beginnings in the 750 spin Hotpoint Liberator and Hotpoint pushed these motors to their absolute limits in this machine. Despite saying 1300 on the dispenser handle, display, user handbook and brochure this machine actually spins at 1400 which is achieved by switching the motor into a half-field condition that not only increases the speed of the motor but also the temperature considerably.

Date code 00 which allegedly means that my machine was part of a test batch made sometime between the 3rd of April 1987 and the 31st of July 1987 (date of purchase).

That's all for tonight! Tomorrow, I'll be testing the machine out and hopefully, I'll get a chance to do a load of washing in it.

I think I still have a full set of electronics for one of those in my shed in Scotland. If it is still there it also has an intact fascia but in brown, not white. I think mine did say 1400 on the front. Perhaps the 1300 and 1400 were identical but the 1400 badge was a justification to charge a higher price? I never had a tacho for checking spin speeds but always suspected that some Hotpoints had a faster spin than claimed.

Hi, I think it would be useful to have a set of spares just in case. Although the electronics are usually quite reliable, I can never be too sure. The 9561 which is the model that came after this, had no changes made whatsoever apart from stating 1400 on the dispenser handle and the display. It might have been an opportunity to charge extra for an already expensive machine.

Congratulations James on finding and restoring another British classic, looking forward to seeing it up and running. Along with all the New / Next Generation appliances Hotpoint provided extensive dealership training along with display stands and customer literature and dealership training documentation. Fab machines with the Profile wash and Spin sequencing. Heres the white & brown colorway.

Superb job, James.

You skills with repairing plastic are excellent, judging by the Hoover Conquest you did and now the repairs o the lid of the Microprofile.
It looks sooooo much better and you got some nice crisp edges on that lid. Congrats.

Am glad that photo I sent was useful, though you have to that Mathew for that, as it was one of the photos he took of our machine, the day he collected it.
When I first saw the top photo, I was gobsmacked at how good your printed version is. Well done again to yourself and to CJ....

Good trick too, with reversing the side strips to get the less damaged side and painting them off white to match the less yellowed parts improves it no end.

Strange how the door on yours looks mint, as usually these go yellow too. Will we ever fathom a consistent pattern for the yellowing? One machine - everything goes off. Another machine the door goes off. Another machine - the fascia goes off ..... you get the idea. Sooo very weird.

Will have to examine the side strips on the 9560W we have over here, as the left one is broken ...

re the fascia .... I will have a look in out fascia boxes to see if we have an ex-white / less yellowed fascia for a 9560/9561. Its a case of getting to them that's the issue - too much stuff in the way.

Will let you know if there is one and try get it across to you, if its in better condition than the one on yours.
If we have one from a 9561 you will have to put up with it saying 1400 on the spin programme details, or try swapping the upper panel Perspex across. At least we know that they can pop out, unfortunately!

Going back to your powder drawer nameplate ..... I cant tell from the photo, but have you covered your new printed version?
If not - keep your eyes peeled for some clear sheet acetate, or some clear plastic packaging and cut a piece to size, to act as a protective cover. Might also add some depth and extra reflective shine to the powder drawer and balance it out with the programme guide.
Might not improve anything at all, but give it a whirl and see what you think.

Great job, James.

Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm glad the lid looks much more presentable now, I wasn't as worried about the cracks as I was about the missing chunks so I'm glad that's sorted.

The door is actually a replacement, so nothing weird going on here!

If you do have a 9561 fascia I'd be very happy to buy it off you and swap around the inserts because they are just glued on so a hair dryer should do the trick. I could also manipulate the 9561 dispenser handle insert so that it states 1300.

At the moment my printed insert is laminated but I am thinking on buying some perspex cut to size and covering it that way.

Hi James

I've been really tardy in keeping up with your posts on this. Fantastic job and I have to say that these are superb machines. I love my later 9567 - possibly my favourite front loader in my collection - but that might be cause it's the only one that's fully working lol! You've done a great job and it looks superb. Happy washing!

Paul - the fascia on your 9560 looks amazing. So shiny which sets the green graphics off beautifully - my favourite styling of the microprofiles
