I finally finished repairs of my Servis Supertwin 108. I bought this machine really because of it's condition - no rust at all and hardly used. To be honest I wasn't sure how much I'd like it as I am far more used to Hoovermatics and never really got on with the Hotpoint Supermatic. Well I'm here to say that I now finally understand the comments from others saying that the Supertwin is the "Rolls Royce of Twin Tubs"! It really is a very well engineered and effective machine. It is astonishingly quiet in use (except for the strangely industrial sounding drain/wash pump...) and the spin motor sounds like a subdued jet engine... My only complaint would be the faintly ludicrous spin brake/double lid arrangement but even that is only a minor gripe. The spin pump rivals that of the Hoovermatic in it's speed and force and rinses very effectively. It will never replace the Hoovermatics for me but is an excellent machine that I am proud to own and one that is very pleasing in it's design and operation.
Having said that, at the same time as discovering the merits of the Supertwin, I was unfortunate enough to be given a laundry facility to use that had been equipped with 4 Indesit INNEX machines... These really represent to me what's gone wrong with washing machine design in the last decade. Over 'friendly' controls that are dumbed down, absurdly long programme run times (50 mins for rinse and spin???!), invisible water levels and dreadful build quality. Quite a contrast to the Supertwin standing next to them. While the Supertwin is not a front loading automatic and so not really comparable, in terms of attention to detail and design and function, I have to ask what has improved...? |
