Evening all!

Remember that lovely Hotpoint Supermatic 1400 that was on eBay a few weeks ago? Well, I had a go at that but unfortunately I lost so I thought to myself "oh well maybe next time". Then out of the blue, last Wednesday evening I received a message from the lady selling it informing me that the winner pulled out and I was subsequently offered it! Naturally I was surprised at first but after some careful consideration I bought it at the weekend and it arrived at noon today just in time for Christmas.

Externally, the machine is absolutely immaculate - almost shop floor fresh! Though like many a 1400 it has a few issues that need to be remedied but nothing I can't sort out with a bit of patience, really it just needs some TLC.

The perspex spinner lid is covered in soap residue and the alloy bracket that supports the lid is entirely eaten away on one side. I should be able to reconstruct this part with a bit of luck.
As with most of these earlier 1400s the rubber filter flow nozzle has more or less disintegrated but there are ways of getting around it.
On the spinner, the sump hose and outlet hose both have some minor perishing under the clips at the pump, the pump itself is not leaking as far as I can see and it runs freely. The spinner itself works thank goodness!
The wash sump hose also has a minor leak under the clip at the pump.

All in all I think I've got off lightly, there's nothing I shouldn't be able to sort out with some patience. I'm absolutely in awe, it's like a dream come true to be honest, seeing one in person let alone owning one!

What a fab Christmas present and the perfect find to end a very rewarding 2015!

James

Nice one

Well done James. That would look fab in my utility room but sadly the 1509 Liberator is taking up the space and still working well... Fingers crossed!

Well done James

No more nightmares of dripping clothes on washdays for you James, iron dry out of a supermatic.

So pleased you've got it and and that you have the skills to get it running back to full working order, I know you'll love using it. Nothing quite like the acceleration of that spinner. And being honest, of course I'd love one, but I know It would only go on the list of restorations, you'll get right on with it, so really pleased it found it's way to you.

Have a great christmas,

Mathew

Congratulations

James
I'm glad to see that Santa has taken it to a good home, it must have been a bit weighty for Rudolph to shift! I'm looking forward to seeing the restoration pics. I must say I like the way that the worktop is shaped to fit round the control panel, I've never seen a 1400 with the worktop on.
Ian.

p.s just been enjoying your 80 class videos too!!

Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd let you know what's going on. The machine is currently stripped down and I've been focusing on some parts in particular for the time being.

First of all, I've found someone who can cast new spinner lid support brackets for me at a competitive price so hopefully I'll get problem sorted in January. They are actually going to be cast in a stronger alloy that's more resistant to corrosion so it will be interesting to see how they turn out.

I have also got the spin pump removed and split in two with a little persuasion. It's not badly corroded but it does need a clean with a wire brush. However, I've noticed some play in the shaft, I don't think that's normal and it may be the cause of the small leak I noticed. I doubt anyone has any spares? I'd pay a fair price for replacement if that's the case.

I just have to sort out the hoses and filter flow nozzle now in the mean time.

Regards,

James

Ian...

I assume you are referring to the NI Railways 80 Class?

Those videos were taken during a trip to Belfast a few years ago. They are proper trains, sadly only one set is in service now as a Sandite unit.

Rather off topic for a moment

James
Thats the ones. Sadly NIR and IE seem to have gone the same way as the railways over here and everything is bland and characterless now.
Ian.
