I was wondering what vintage it was, Eddie?
I think our next-door neighbors in Old Saybrook had this model...unusual KitchenAid with white vinyl on the racks(instead of blue)and Big Blue below. They were a grand Sicilian family who gathered in a beach house that the Grandfather had built in the '50's. 4 families under one roof with a "Nonna" who was a great cook. They needed that dishwasher. |

Because I was wondering the same thing. According to an old brochure, the formica-ish top was replaceable, and the Top-Loading model, the KD-4P had two cycles: Normal Wash and Rinse and Hold whereas a less expensive model, the KDY-4P lacked the Rinse Agent Dispenser and had only the one cycle.
The one for sale seems to be a KD-4P so I'm very glad of that. I'm also glad that it has a sheath heater that, unlike a lot of models from the same vintage, it maintains water heat during the cycles. I'm even glad that it has a big handle in the front of the unit; I make a lot of fresh pasta and those portable dishwasher handles are excellent tools for drying pasta sheets before cutting them. And those, coincidentally enough, are made in the pasta roller accessories that attach to my KitchenAid K-5 mixer . |

According to the "Sheet", they made these in 1963-1964.
I'm not sure, but I think they kept the White Racks until the KD-5 or KDC-5
I attached 2 pics. One has the Hydro with White and the KDC-5 has Blue Racks or maybe it's the lighting or maybe it's 60 years and my eyes are gone. |

That's cool, that you could have a top to match or at least come near to matching whatever decor going on in the kitchen or room with this dishwasher. Besides the top loading, the heat that keeps the water hot through all the cycles, I like the pram or bowed look of the front of this dishwasher perhaps far more than a simple planar design, especially that handle. And yes, after I have now seen this for the first time, I'd gladly own one, too.

This has the timer from the 15 series, BUT IT LACKED THE DOUBLE WALLED TUB OF THE KD2P. I would love to find one of these with its special combination of features. |

Have played around with the MM by running two wash cycles after the pre-wash and pre-rinse to see what there was.
Water heating wise even with hot water >140F without insulation the best dw can do is slow the heat loss. After two wash cycles (resetting before first main wash drains)water is not much hotter than when it went in and indeed may have cooled a bit. OTOH the two short following rinses send out water very much hot as what it was. Cleaning wise, yes with today's modern enzyme detergents a longer wash cycle does bring better results. This is especially true for badly soiled loads and or if things have been allowed to sit. However remember there isn't a thermostat in these units so heater is engaged during entire cycle. While happy with the MM my next vintage dw would be one that opens from the front. Unless one has the space to not really use the top of these top-loading dishwashers as counter space, having to remove and replace items before opening gets old very fast. Probably the only exception that would tempt me is a nice Whirlpool top loading dw. |

Hi Laundress. Sounds like we have the same space situations in our "galleys".
I had the KD2-P, '57 MM,and the Coppertone MM which turquoisedude has now.
While I like loading the Top loading portables, I really need the extra Counter Space which is pretty much why I've gone to FL Portables.
I'm sure you would be in Heaven with a Front Load.
As you can see in the pic, The portable is next to the stove. Then I have the Counter/sink and that's about it for prep Space. |

But the story was always the same; way out in the Mid-West somewhere and or a seller that only wanted cash in hand.... no shipping arrangements.
My convection and toaster oven rest on top of the MM, same as when I had the Frigidaire/Kenmore portable. For the latter could just roll the entire thing to the sink no problem. Now have to take everything off... There are times after a long day it is just about all a body can do to get dinner on the table. Then comes the clearing up which means getting everything off the MM, loading dishes, then putting everything back. After about a year of this it is getting a bit tired. *LOL* Imagine doing that two, three or more times per day. *LOL* Only saving grace about the MM is the full sized capacity but slightly less wide than other portables. In a tight kitchen that does matter, but will learn to adjust if need be. |
