Yes folks, I did it. As much as I loved washing in the 1-18 and the superb results it delivers (especially rinsing), I am concerned about having it as the everyday machine. It needs a few parts and I am having a very difficult time finding them. So, with the Whirlpool shredmonster permanently reposing in the garage (my know it all friend Mikey the engineer is FURIOUS with me, I bought me a Speed Queen top loader model AWS 75. Priced it out at several stores within 60 miles and got an array of prices from $770 down to $570. Unfortunately it was the most local store that had the highest price. The best price was at Liebert's Royal Green Appliances in White Plains, NY. They couldn't have been nicer and there is no charge for delivery, to boot. Arrives next Saturday.

Priced a matching dryer also, but in good conscience I couldn't go ahead. My dryer is only 6.5 years old. And for as much bad press as Amana laundry received after Raytheon sold them to Goodman Industries (remember my Amana washer experience!!), the dryer has not been a problem. So I think I will hold out. Besides, I am still pining for a French Door refrigerator and you never know when the 8 year old dishwasher will give it up...

On another front, a friend of mine listed and sold the house of a 96 year old woman who has lived there since 1960. OF course I didn't get a chance to see it for the two days it was actually on the market. But I hear she has some very vintage furniture and some "really old appliances" including a dishwasher that hasn't worked since the day she moved in. So my friend promised I would get in to see the place once the current owner started packing to leave..... we will see

Love my new Speed Queens.

Congratulations! When I moved into my new house last year I bought a brand-new Speed Queen pair. I have the AWS52 top loader and AES68 dryer.
When I was going in to buy my laundry gear, the first SQ units were just being unboxed for showroom use. I knew immediately what I wanted.
The units have been great. The washer is great at balancing loads. The mouth of the dryer is so big you can just fling your clothes into the dryer and not miss. I like their website too. And SQ is in RIPON WISCONSIN! I really try to purchase as much American as I possibly can.
I'm recommending them to my friends as they decomission their later-model Maytags...
I had a Maytag Performa at the old house (left it behind). And although it did clean the clothes, during spin-cycle it couldn't balance a load under any circumstances which drove me nuts. These SQ unit are infinitely better in my opinion.

Happy with SQ in Phoenix

I have had my set for over a year and could not be happier. I have the front loading ATS90 washer and AES68 dryer. They are great machines. Hope you are just as happy with your new SQ! Congratulations!

If not for OasisHE or F&P

I'd get an SQ as a 3rd choice in laundry. They are... well... the QUEEN!

Excuse my but why do you need a bitchy, moody washing machin

toggleswitch's profile picture
I saw the front-loading stackable SQs today. Very industrial feel. Both machines' controls were at the top of the washer. (Bottom of the stack).

Why does the top-loading SQ look like an AmanaTag?
Except the AmanaTag has a plastic outer tub, whereas the SQ still has a porcelain one. Methinks they are mechanically similar if not identical, save lower quality matrials on the AmanaTag

Well, Togs, cherie - since Amana and Speed Queen were once owned by the same parent company, Raytheon, they were similar machines. Then in late 1999/early 2000, Raytheon sold off its appliance businesses. Speed Queen went to Alliance Laundry Systems and Amana went to Goodman Industries. So the first generation of non Raytheon Amanas looked almost identical to the older ones. But you had the plastic outer tubs and the bad seals and lots of motor and transmission problems.
I haven't paid much attention to Amana since they were purchased by Maytag, but I suspect that any current similarities between Amanatags and Speed Queens are not intentional

...but rather remnants of yesteryear.

Thank you very much.

The way to tell the difference between the SQ and the AmanaTag designs are to simply lift the lid. If you see a D-shaped tub ring, beware; if the tub ring is round, then you're OK.

I noticed that the "AmanaTag Amanas" had wider lids than the earlier machines as well.

And CONGRATS Anthony on the new SQ's! Let us know how you like them; they sure do look like fun! Hopefully these have some decent build quality in them and won't suffer from the horrible tub seal/bearing problems that plagued the previous Amana machines.

The washer arrives today - so I need to get busy. Doing the last few regular loads in the 1-18 now and then need to clear the laundry area for the Speed Queen. I will miss using the 1-18 as my regular machine. I am still in awe of its performance and power, but I need to find some parts to keep it in top shape. So I will move it to the garage for a while next to the copper brown one and hope that some of you guys can help me with parts.....

As I mentioned, I didn't replace the Amana dryer. I would have preferred a matched set, but the dryer is still working just fine....for now. I still owe some pics of the 1-18 and I will get to that and some pics of the new Speed Queen.

This is one of he times I wish I did have a real basement so I could store and hook up and use more than one machine at once. But in most split level houses, there isn't much in the way of "laundry room space".....

New SQ / different design?

paulg's profile picture
I used to own one of the Maytag Performa series that appears to have a reliability issue. When I went to the store, I could see the Maytag,Amana,Admiral,Crosley etc all had exactly the same layout, agitator, lid, controls etc. You could tell they were all related.
After buying the new SQ washer, it seems very apparent that it has entirely a different "personality" than the Maytags. Admittedly I have not opened up the new washer to see the mechanism. However, the agitator, drum, controls, noises and general performance is much different than the Performa. I strongly suspect that the new SQ washers are of a different design (or radically changed design).
Most notably, the old Performa couldn't stop the spin quickly when the lid was raised. In addition, the Performa couldn't balance a load during spin. The new SQ stops the drum almost immediately and balances every load.
I'm sure the people truly in "the know" out there can attest if the NEW SQ guts are (or are not) the same as the ill-fated Maytag designs of late. I'd be interested to hear. At any rate - I own the SQ machines and like them a lot and will comment in this forum positively (or not) as time goes on...

Unbalanced you say?

I am surprised to hear repeated complaints of Maytag top loaders having balance issues.
My two experiences, mom's Performa and my Atlantis never have had any issue with balancing or producing a noticable vibration.
Mine ran on concrete and mom's is on a wood floor.

There should be no similarities between any Maytag and a Speed Queen - they are totally different companies and have no relation to each other.....

Agreed

paulg's profile picture
I highly doubt that Alliance Laundry would reuse old Maytag-owned designs - or be allowed to.. nor should they.....
The Performa, by the way - was absolutely the worst in balancing loads. I would have to run up and down the stairs at least twice per wash cycle to rebalance the spin. I actually got "dishpan hands" due to the number of times my arms were in the water redistributing the washload. Don't miss the thing...
Admittedly, the GE/Hotpoints that we had from the late 1950's to the 2000's weren't all stellar performers either. The only washer that successfully balance the load time and time again was the 1975 Hotpoint... and my new SQ.

Speed Queen Pics?

mrb627's profile picture
I recall a while back that someone posted some pics of the SQFL but I cannot find them. I would like to know if they have an older style splashy wash action or the newer "I don't see any water" of more modern machines.

Have linked to the seven's putfile site with pictures and videos of the SQ. Can't see much water, but still seems relatively splashy for a modern frontloader!!!

Thanks Lavamat. I have seen the_seven's site on putfile, but I can only get one of the videos to play. Still researching these machines. I thought I had heard mention of new models coming out, but can't find anything to support that.
