Westinghouse had some talented graphic designers. That control panel is a work of art. Some local buddies who are graphic designers talk about the Westinghouse logo as a seminal piece of GD history, up there with the UPS "Big Brown" campaign.

It's why I like your appreciation for appliances, Ken. Not everyone is sensitive to that and I am in no way criticizing what and how much others appreciate their appliances from a design standpoint. But plenty do appreciate the designs. In particular, beside the appealing panel design, note the SIZE of that logo on the front right side of the front panel to assert to the consumer "HEAVY DUTY".
About the only thing you might see, today, in its place is a digital screen to control via your iPhone or Android device.

And I said it before, but your graphic renderings of appliances throughout aw.org, are really great, Ken. Thanks!

Phil

Westinghouse's late sixties/early seventies (pre-divestiture) designs must be timeless, because they look great, even now.

Everything was right about them.

Neat how the back of the drum looks kinda like current Frigidaire offerings do.

Through out the 50s all the way to the end around 1974 were some of the best ever. I especially like the modern look of the 60s appliances and on.

It was just too bad that their appliances were known to most consumers to be troublesome even in the 50s.  Even big builders that were obsessed with cost like Levitt abandoned WH in the early 60s.

Hi Greg, yes the dryer back looks a lot like some current FD dryers because it is basically the same dangerous dryer design, many mechanical parts are still interchangeable. I rebuild several of these a week and the back shroud on the rear of the drum is usually filled with brown scorched lint, I should take pictures of all the burned lint I see in these dryers.

Every electric FD dryer I have worked on has been the same way John. All it would take is a los of flow and you would have a fire in no time.

burnt lint? So, is prodigious efforts to keep it clean result in yet - potential fire hazards or can one keep the fire trucks from visiting?
