Hello all,

I was out used appliance hunting today and wandered into a little shop because there were some interesting things in the front window.

To make a long story short, they have two Maytag electric dryers, both in almond. Some of you may know that I've been on the hunt for an almond Maytag dryer to match my washing machine.

One of the two dryers is a Neptune, I believe the same model as the picture below that I found online. The other is more BOL and looks like a normal dryer. Again, see picture below found online.

Both machines have mechanical dials and the Neptune also features a slider switch and several buttons.

I'm going back tomorrow to purchase one of them and would like your input on which is the better machine. They're both the same price, $150.

I'll vote for the Neptune dryer on this one.
It has more features and the internals are pretty much the same on both. My aunts had this same dryer for their Neptune washer.
The washer was the "hangar queen" whereas their dryer never ever needed a call.

Dryers all around are pretty reliable.

Get the Neptune.  I have the Dependable Care version of this from 1993 and it's still a great dryer.  The Neptune is essentially the same dryer, but with higher velocity air flow.

Thanks guys! I'm walking out the door right now to go snap up that Neptune. I've already called ahead to the store and I'm very excited!

Higher velocity fan??

Bob, if the Neptune is basically the same as the dependable care dryer (which I also have)would the only difference between the ventilation system be the blower wheel?
Do you have a Neptune Model number for the machine in the picture above so I can compare them part for part? I need a new blower wheel and would rather increase the performance of our unit to dry faster and exhaust the air better as it has to travel nearly 20 feet to the roof cap!
Thanks
Steve

Steve, it's an MDE4000.  I really like the infinite temperature slide control.  I miss having infinite heat control like the Lady Kenmore I had before this dryer.  Mine has 4 temp buttons, including air fluff.

Thanks, Bob, for the info

Well, there is a difference in the blower wheels with the Neptune wheel having more vanes on it and the housings look different. Since I cannot tell if the housing will fit into my LDE9606 machine, I may just replace the OEM with the same one for the time being.
If there is anyone out there who might know if I can just swap wheels, I would appreciate knowing if it can be done.
Thanks

She's home! And on her third load. So far I absolutely love it. It's quiet, fast, and of course it color matches the washer.

If people maintain their dryers regularly Lint isn't a problem.

I have had a set of Neptunes since 2000. No problems at all with the pair. I used them for 16 years and they are still in the house and I have 4 people living there with a dog and still no problems. Have taken then apart for cleaning and not much at all to vacuum out. Great machines. You will like the dryer for sure. Don't listen to that foolish kid ge whatever. He knows not what he types. lol My set is probably older than he is.

LOL

It's nice to know that I am not the only one who has had one of my less than constructive posts removed by the "webmaster".

I find it best to dry on high for cotton/linen/towels.....

and Permpress/Casual on low for best results of minimized wrinkles....

great machines....but what do I know.....

Thanks for all the input, guys! I love it so far and I can't even put into words how excited I am to have a pair of Newton Maytags sitting in my laundry room, even if they're about a decade apart.

I love the blinking moisture monitor on the Neptune. You can tell a glance if your clothes are ready without opening the dryer and interrupting the cycle. The less it blinks, the drier they are. Plus the end of cycle signal has a cool Star Trek-ish sound to it!

The very same reasons why I like the moisture monitor on my dryer.  It was the first model/series to have the feature.

you may want to opt for the matching washer in the future....

but select the 4000 series...less chance of glitches...more options as well...

cycle naing schemes

I noticed that manbrands will lable the "normal" cycle, for example, cotton,cotton/sturdy, regular and/or just normal. Why is that?

Because the vast majority of laundry loads are made up of cotton materials, and sturdy cottons.
And that's what their marketing departments decide to label the cycles as.

OH... I see.

I see. I noticed the new GE's have several variants of the same sturdy cottons cycle, like darks whites, and light colors. Excuse me if this post is not on topic, but related.

Well, the verdict is in:

mjg0619's profile picture
My mother, who generally abhors my collections of hard wearing, properly working, will-work-until-the-second-coming-of-Christ, vintage and semi-vintage appliances, has FINALLY admitted just how much she loves not only my new-to-me Neptune dryer, but how much she absolutely loves my 1993 Newton Maytag washing machine that sits next to it.

Getting the seal of approval from that crazy old bird is the ultimate compliment to any appliance!

Now to locate, install, and sell her on a reverse rack Maytag JetClean replacement for the plastic tub GE in the kitchen..............
