While on vacation in England I was browsing in the John Lewis department store in Liverpool and saw these washers and combinations on the sales floor. I love how compact they are compared to the big American hulks, but I didn't see any top loaders. Do they not sell them in Britian?

Britain is the only country in the EU I know of where you can actually get V-axis toploaders, but usually only online in certain stores due to there verry rare state over here.

Top loaders with agitators? I don't think any manufacturer sells them here in Europe really. Alliance sell one model for commercial settings. Other than that... one would have to look for a used one.

Though sold as commercial

I don't think anything would stop anybody from buying one of these.

And you did not tell us???

We would have been delighted to host you for a visit or at least a dinner. If you are still here it may not be too late - please use AW messenger.

And no, top loaders are very much a niche market here, with just a few models imported from other countries.

Al

On this side of the pond there are H-axis toploaders, but they aren't very popular in the UK because many people in the UK have their washing machine in the kitchen, under the counter. Here's an older Whirlpool model.

No..

Almost never would you see an American type TL machine.

As we were quite late to the fully auto washer, we went straight from Twin Tubs to FL machines; I believe this was at some point in the 70's.

TL with agitators are a really niche market, and to get one brand new (from the few that are on sale online) costs a fortune.
I had 2, got them off ebay, I do like them, but the water consumption is way overboard, compared to what we are used to.

As others have said, we have a few of the H-axis TLs, but again, only a very small market for them.

Linked below is one of our appliance retailers, you'll see pretty much the same as what you saw in John Lewis.

Agitator top loaders were popular in the UK and Ireland in 1960s and 1970s, but as relatively few homes have dedicated laundry rooms, the under-the-counter front loader was inevitably far better sellers, especially when fitted kitchens became the norm. Hotpoint, Servis and Parnall all marketed automatic top-loaders in the 1960s, and the Hotpoint model was very popular with those who had space. Indeed, the much-loved Hotpoint survived through to the late 1990s (pretty much the same basic design for the entire run, and based on the GE Filter-flo).

The Hotpoint top loader was killed off with the advent of EU energy labelling which of course showed the agitator washer to be much less efficient than the front-load type. That is was mechanically more complex and thus rather expensive to make didn't help either.

US imports were (and as shown above) commonly found - matching sets from Maytags, Whirlpools and in Ireland the GE Filter-flo were all popular with those with sufficient space and money. In cash terms the US washers were at the premium end of the market.

Incidentally, the Hotpoint design was licensed to Fisher and Paykel in the 60s and 70s; quite ironic as they are of course the pioneers of the effective HE top loader. Rather a shame that they don't sell them over here - a few make through as relocation imports. I have a F&P aquasmart which is a fantastic machine.
